Wonderful gun. There's film of them being manufactured by Chrysler during the war. I heard somewhere that when the Air Force decided to mount Bofors guns on AC-130 gunships they had a hard time finding guns and spare parts. Odd, considering how many were produced. They wound up salvaging guns from M42 Dusters which were being used as live fire targets on an aircraft gunnery range.

reminds me of the development of the first modern Gatling gun around the time of the Korean War. The developers borrowed and old Gatling gun from the Smithsonian, acquired correct ammo and rigged an electric motor and feed system and fired about 2000 rounds a minute.

@scnitzelmahn64306 жыл бұрын
Leveling the gun is important as because the gun will dip quite quickly towards the lower end if nobody is serving the gun. Can be quite the safety hazard as the barrel will swing quite quickly under its own weight. You can also use this to your advantage for leveling as you can swing the barrel to see where it dips to ensure it is leveled correctly.

1 thing I always wondered is. This thing was up for sale in 1931. Almost everyone had it during ww2 but they only decided to add it to tank over a generation after the war. This with ap rounds that could be scary vs 80% of the tanks used in ww2 head-on. According to what I heard they had ap rounds and it could punch in around 50mm of armor which is basically everything the Germans had when invading France. Not to mention how effective distance fuse rounds would be vs infantry behind cover.

I once knew a woman who worked for Curtice in Buffalo during WW2. She told me that Curtice worked closely with the British to make sure they were all using the same measurements whether it was metric, Wentworth or the American SAE standards. The British had already reduced the number of parts in the Bofos 40mm as well as eliminating some precision metal turnings with cast pieces. American manufacturers reduced the number even further and developed some of the mass production techniques. The result: an American made part would fit a British plane or vehicle.
@Perfusionist016 жыл бұрын
This really is an iconic gun from WW2. The US even built motorized mounts, usually on tank chassis. One such, the M19, was built on the chassis of the M24 light tank and was not developed in time for WW2 but was used for ground fire in Korea. The M42 used on the chassis of the M41 light tank and was used for ground fire in Viet Nam. In that conflict iit was usually nicknamed "Duster". After Viet Nam the Army was in the process of discarding the Dusters when somebody realized that 1) the attack helicopter had become a real danger on the battlefield and 2) we no longer had mid-range AA weapons that would destroy or deter an attack helicopter. The remaining M42s in the National Guard received a short lease on life, but finally retired. Bottom line is that the original Bofors design stayed in US service until the early 1980s!

The 40mm Bofos was almost not that long gone from US service. If the M247 Sgt York had been adopted (if it had worked), then there would likely still be some of these in USAR or ARNG service today. As it was, the M42 Duster, which also used twin Bofors guns, remained in active service until the early 70s and the ARNG until 1988.

The L/70 version of this gun (only some tweaks) is used today in the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle. Pretty much the same gun, only longer barrel.
@anther45206 жыл бұрын
Aside from the longer barrel, the L/70 variant uses slightly longer and more powerful ammunition (40x364mmR) than the older L/60 variant (40x311mmR). The L/70 also fires at a much higher muzzle velocity (around 3350ft/sec) than the L/60 (roughly 2900ft/sec). That said, you probably don't want to be on the receiving end of either variant of the gun, unless you're actively looking to have a significant emotional event. :)
