I don't see why the two are exclusive. It is very, very difficult to convincingly reproduce the effect of mop-applied whitewash on a small-scale model. You can spend hours carefully trying to get just the right effect to make it look like some tiny man swabbed it on with a heavy hand. Winter wash is one of the hardest effects to make look right in modeling, along with weathering. it is easy to over do, and easy to under-do, very hard to make it look natural. I dont see why a normal white camo scheme should be at all difficult _without_ the weathering and hasty application effects to worry about: you just paint it white. No reason that should take more than a few minutes.

yes, but he means there is no record at _all_ of it being called "Hetzer", not just that there was no use of the term in Nazi or factory documents. Not a single soldier's letter, account, photo caption, requisition order, etc, has ever been found calling the JgdPz38(t) "Hetzer" *during WWII*. On the contrary, the A-10 has been openly called "Warthog" since it entered service, in popular media, popular use, by the crews and all of the military in general, and as a matter of fact in numerous occasions in official USAF and manufacturers documents as well. They may stop short of officially calling it "Warthog", but they do not fail to acknowledge the popular name for it, and in fact encourage it. So they are not at all the same thing. Hetzer is a term that didn't exist until after the 38(t) was long out of service, the A-10 has been widely known as the Warthog, with very extensive documentation, since the year it entered service.

I am sure there is a ton of documentation that refers to the A-10 Warthog. There has also been some documentation provided since this video was made that there were (rare) references to this vehicle as "Hetzer" So if you are trying to do something period accurate, you shouldn't call it "Hetzer". But in general discussions for identifying the vehicle today "Hetzer" is the the clearest and most recognizable term.

WW2 was full of tiny tanks with extremely cramped crew compartments. It took a while for the notion that crew efficiency could be more important than limiting space under armor to catch on. The Chieftain largely established his reputation doing video on WW2 tanks as the spokesman for World of Tanks, so he has had to cram himself into a lot of them. Keep in mind that the men fighting WW2 were survivors of the great depression, and often of relatively small stature compared to 21st century tankers due to poor nutrition as children. Also, some nations issued regulations limiting the height of soldiers that could be assigned to tanks in order to make those cramped spaces more viable. The Soviet Union even went so far as to allow a few women in its tank crews.

***** during the show just before the final battle the Turtle Team Panzer 38 t has the entire top of the hull removed and then replaced by the hull of Jgdpanzer 38. He said that it's not as simple as just lowering the hull onto the chasis.

Remember Veterans memories are colored as much by after war conventions as they are by things during the war. U.S. servicemen never referred to the M4 as the Sherman during the war. It was only after the war with the media picking up the British naming conventions did that happen. U.S. servicemen simply called the M4 the M4 or mediums during the war. Similarly U.S. servicemen never called the M10 the Wolverine or the M36 the Jackson/Slugger. They simply called them TDs or by their model number of M10 or M36. However, if you interviewed them years after when they had been exposed to later conventions and media they will use those terms same thing has happened with the Jagpanzer 38t. Not used during the war but came to be known as that after.

Just about every armored vehicle has been called "The Iron Coffin" at some point, dude. Although in the case of the 38(t) it has much more to do with the visual appearance of it. If it was as horrible as you claim, how do you explain the fact that it was a very popular vehicle? Almost everything you mention was cooked up by nerds arguing stats after the war. A 38(t) that got itself surrounded by infantry had failed to follow proceedure, jut like any assault gun. NONE of the Stugs or Jagdpanzers were equipped to combat infantry unsupported, and every one of them was killed by infantry on numerous occasions. In almost every case, it was a "single infantryman" who successfully threw the grenade, or pulled the bazooka trigger that killed it. It is not a video game where you need six guys attacking it at once to put its 'kill bar' over the limit or something. And there would rarely be a case of a single infantryman actually attacking an AFV alone, that would just be stupid. Infantry operate in groups for a reason, playing Rambo is for morons. Although it sometimes makes sense for a single man to dash from cover to attack an enemy AFV as it passes. But every type of AFV that was ever built can be killed in the same way. A 38(t) was not a front-line main combat vehicle, it was a portable AT gun designed to give the crew some mobility and protection against small arms and artillery fragments. It was not meant to get into tank duels, and it was not meant to press forward of the front line unsupported by infantry, or at least other armor. You know who had even less protection than a 38(t) crew? A Pak40 crew. Yet they were among the most successful weapons of the war. How o you explain that? Stop thinking of a 38(t) in terms of MBT combat, it is a self-propelled 75mm gun, that is all it is. And as one of those, it is quite good, especially from the point of view that it was using already-developed chassis that would have been wasted production capacity otherwise. A bad AFV is better than no AFV, and the 38(t) was not taking up production space that could have been used for more Panthers (although even if it did, one must ask how many 38(t) a single Panther was actually worth)

Most of those tanks either never existed or no longer have surviving units. The ones that do will surely be off limits for The Chieftain to climb around in. You ask the impossible.

Redwall Warlords Every single tank I mentioned, is stored at the Tank Museum in Bovington and all but the MBT80 in good condition, alongside others like the FV4202. Bovington is also very allowing for this sort of thing and has an open door policy to historians attempting to show tank history to others. They allowed The Challenger from WG to go over their FV4202 in extremely detail, even more than Chieftain does to these tanks here.

Yeah, they were running out of molybdenum and other metals to make good tank armro. Armour was getting brittle then, you don't want that, you want it to deform and absorb the energy of the hit, not shatter and ruin the crew's day.

Lack of alloys made it spall more. yes. It would not so much, shatter, as much as it would crack and spall off chucks which because of the cracking made the armor even weaker towards the next shot and a pain to repair.

I suspect he is well aware if it, dude. He just finished pointing it out, and even if he didn't already know that it had been sitting there all day, he was just standing with his face and hands within a foot of it on several occasions. If it had been hot enough to burn, he would have felt the radiant heat coming off of it, not to mention heard the sounds of the metal ticking as it cooled and shrank. A hot vehicle makes itself known by a variety of subtle signs.

fooeytheduck To put it simply, in the TV show the "sports" tanks are all several times more durable than their historical counterparts, to protect the occupants. The Maus incident was them abusing that fact to perform a feat of endurance that was impossible for a WW2 vehicle, but was achieved because the sports versions have sci-fi level chasis.

Find me multiple veterans all affirming they knew of the vehicle as Hetzer, I might be convincing. Veteran accounts are notorious for conflicting with each other, and with clear historical fact. There are too many ways for memory to be corrupted, too many incentives to " remember" things other than they actually were. A single account is basically worthless as proof, since a majority have proven to be demonstrably false or in error.
