I lived in slum for 8 years in mumbai and in extreme poverty, my family especially mom helped us in getting out of extreme poverty. She earned a mere 50 dollars/month working in a hair saloon and with that money she raised me and my sister. With almost no money she risked it all to open her own hair saloon and guess what, it worked. Money started pouring in and i was able to become an engineer. I now live in Canada. We beat poverty. My mom is a superwoman.

Something to be noticed - • Foreigners always finds it fascinating to show the dirty places in India and calling it crazy and poor. • Indians find it sad and amused at the same time and quite addictive to watch how foreigners depicts the nation. While the media and politics are busy with their agenda and TRP and nobody ever talk of these slums. Looking closely I have never heard any media or politics taking about Dharavi slums (As a kid I never knew, there is such a large slum ever existed) only in the recent Covid times when the most cases were coming out of Dharavi. This is the truth

For the most part, you are correct. I visited India for three months, and yes, while I can agree there are pockets of poverty, the same holds true anywhere you go in the world. I found India to be truly fascinating, despite the major culture shock I experienced while there.

Fcking kidding me, the ppl there don't choose to be poor, ofc drug traffic is connected to less governed places such as in slums and poor districts but that does not make every poor person a drug dealer. Rich ppl endulge in drugs too, they even promote drug trade and traffic in other places like slums and often times get away with selling drugs in front of everyone bc of money.

For all the people who are watching this video, The Govt. of Maharastra and the Municipal Corporation tried really hard to build houses in the same area for the people. The people resisted. Reason being, there are a lot of illegal activities that happen here. Regulated housing leaves no scope for all that.

India has the world's largest slum but also the world's largest cricket stadium , the world's largest race track , the world's second largest IT sector and the 3rd largest economy . There's many more things . But ud only be able to see them if A) you step out of your "oh I'm so lucky I'm a white American" mindset . B) accept the fact that you're here just to look at one slum even tho india has thousands of amazing things to offer . Btw , there are MANY things that we indians have better than you . I'm from Mumbai . I've seen the slums from a distance only. What I know is that these people do not tax consuming new house constructions or randomly picked up. They need an exposure to the new world and a hand to put them on that track.

I grew up poor in the U.S., my parent's made sure our basic need's were met. With 10 of us it was a struggle, this type of poverty is on a whole different level....

Well said but india has the real structure on things hard to believe.i have been to india at least 30 times now and I see little improvement.people who are self made like NRI yes they go back buy or make homes then come back but the poor who live in india just become poorer.to not have the basic needs meet like toilets in every household so hard to believe but it is still a fact.to not get one decent meal a day so hard to believe

Bank Tellers are far less efficient than manual wage labourers in the slums. I lived in a slum for the first 11 years of my life. My only advantage was that my mother was extremely forceful about my English education. That was the only way that I managed to get out of there.

This is from un -- in the world, poverty is on the decline in the country, with close to 44 Indians escaping extreme poverty every minute, as per the World Poverty Clock. India had 73 million people living in extreme poverty which makes up 6.5% of its total population, according to the Brookings report. In May 2012, the World Bank reviewed and proposed revisions to their poverty calculation methodology and purchasing power parity basis for measuring poverty worldwide.[1] It was a minimal 3.6% in terms of percentage. As of 2020, the incidence of multidimensional poverty has significantly reduced, declining from 54.7 percent to 6 percent.[2] According to United Nations Development Programme Administrator Achim Steiner, India lifted 271 million people out of poverty in a 10-year time period from 2005/06 to 2015/16.[2] The World Bank has been revising its definition and benchmarks to measure poverty since 1990, with a $2 per day income on purchasing power parity basis as the definition in use from 2005 to 2013.[3] Some semi-economic and non-economic indices have also been proposed to measure poverty in India.

They deserve it. Whole country can not leave in one city. It is their fault that they are residing there where they are not worthy for that place. They should move to their own state where they vote on the basis of caste. Only Mumbai is not responsible for creating jobs for everybody. If it is not worthy to live you there go somewhere else. Even most of them are mot even the originally from Bihar and UP not Maharastrian. They shoould be spelled from there to their respective state if they aare not useful for that area.

I am also dharavi kar I am living in dharavi I don't feel any sham about that most of the business are done in dharavi and thing are cheaper than other area .The thing you get in the show room also made here you should vist and see more the 2 crores people living in that area . So please don't feel bad .And the room which you see has all the comfort inside . Works are getting more than 500 per day .

I lived in Dharavi in my initial days of struggle. What i was and now what i am, is not of importance. What is important is that the video is showing/ telling the extreme of dirtiness and poverty. It is not at all true. I have seen the richest of rich and the poorest of poor there. Anyways... Something has to be done about dharavi ... To make it a better place to live in.

Every time I see places like this, or hear it my heart breaks. My natural instincts to help these people kick in but I can’t do anything. To know people live in these conditions while I’m in a comfortable bed with a roof over my head and a full fridge. Life shouldn’t be life this but we all created it so we all have to fix it before something really major is going to happen to the world.
