Super nice layout and large components through out. Doesn't really do anything that your DSL or JCM won't do but dang if it isn't one hell of a nice amp. Super quiet, awesome effects loop, and nails that AC/DC tone.

This footage is pure gold. Schematics of the Dirty Shirley have been floating around for a while now but I couldn’t find anything on the bright/tight switch. My best guess is that C4 is placed in series with C3 reducing the amount of bass hitting the second gain stage. I can’t see the value but I’m betting it’s 2.2nF with C3 being 22nF. That’s the tight half of the switch. The other half of the switch, the bright half looks like it might bypass the 820 ohm cathode resistor (R16) with C8 which I imagine is 680nF. You’d likely hear a little pop if this is the case. This cathode resistor is not bypassed on the Dirty Shirley. It also looks like the shunt resistor for the middle gain setting on the structure switch is now 10k (R10); it used to be 4.7k.

Thanks man, you sound like an amp builder :-) I’ve since added a V2 mod and a bass cut across the master volume which really changes the placement of the mids - a really nice option. That video will drop soon.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your mod! I like to tinker. I have a spare Jet City 20W head to try the Little Sister circuit on. Depending on how it goes I might buy the real thing. I’ve done some BE-based preamps and own a Runt 50, and have come to the conclusion that all that front end compression isn’t my thing. The Little Sister is likely a better fit. The JEL20 is also on my radar and might work the best because it’s a bit more aggressive and has the Small Box clean channel. If you’re able to share the value of C8 it would be much appreciated. I’m assuming it’s bypassing R16 because it’s the same size and shape as the C2 and C6 which are 680nF, otherwise I would expect it to bypass R14 as part of the bright function in which case I would expect it to be in the 470pF ballpark.

@@oldguyjammin9732 PT20 might mean Pink Taco, or it might mean Power Transformer. In which case OT20 likely means Output Transformer. I'd also wager a guess that the loop isn't tube driven at this price point. Three 12AX7's probably means two for gain and tone stack and one for phase inverter. But, then again, you had it on workbench and I haven't!

I heard those white square components and some capacitors heat up and should be soldered with clearance from the circuit board. Is it really a point of concern ? Psionic channel' mentions that on almost all amps, mainly Fender's.

Awesome that you bring up the Brent hinds Terror here! It’s my favorite amp and the best Marshall clone I’ve played because it’s extremely bright and actually has the “Kerrang!”. You can achieve spot on AC/DC tones at low volume. This is something I haven’t found in other Plexi clones, especially the Friedman’s I have tried so far. They’re always insanely dark and muddy, but I haven’t tried this one yet. Having experienced both the BH Terror and this Friedman in person, would you say they’re comparable as far as brightness and aggression at low volumes?
@oldguyjammin9732
@oldguyjammin9732 2 ай бұрын
Hey there, yes I’d say there are similarities. The BH is one I’ve missed so much that I picked up another just last week with matching cab. It has a truly unique tone (mid gain, thick, deep and boomy and yet tight) that I haven’t found elsewhere. I think the LS is my favorite Friedman and one I’ll keep. I think it doesn’t the Marshall thing really well but I did feel is lacked a little something so I tried a V2 mod (less than $200) and that did it, very happy with it. I do plan to add a bright cap to both however. I wouldn’t ’need to’ really but I want to see what a big 4700 will do cause the natural channel on the BH is a bit dark… depends on the guitar too I suppose.
@brightfalls6788
@brightfalls6788 2 ай бұрын
@@oldguyjammin9732 Interesting. Maybe I’ll have to give Friedman another chance. The BH Terror is the business for sure though. Just make sure you play it through Greenbacks to get the most out of it. I use it with a set of Bareknuckle Riff Raffs through a pair of 20 watt Celestion Heritage G12M (a little warmer and tighter than the standard Greenbacks) and it sounds EXACTLY like 70’s AC/DC🤘 I wasn’t even a huge AC/DC fan until I realized I was producing the tone by accident, and then I just started learning all their stuff because it sounds so close to the recordings. Now when I see people act like it’s an impossible tone to achieve and you have to buy a 100 watt Plexi and turn it up all the way and even then it’s not quite right….? It’s just ridiculous. Adrian Emsley packed this sound into a little Terror Chassis at speaking volume. lol

all right, may have to do that :-) apples and oranges I think. The little sister is a looser version of the Friedman JJ or Runt. I don't have a Pink Taco to use as a comparison. THe Fireball has more gain and is more pleasing to the ear imo. The little sister has a strange bottom end. Changing the bright cap to a 4700 could be the ticket!

@user-bb7vc1qd4n well said there User-B, Friedman amps really require the right Cab. I found the little sister FAT as well until I got the matching open-back cab. At about 9:02 in your video, point out a little brown capacitor on the imput jack that you were thinking might help with noise. I'm working on a Headfirst Mod for an Origin 20 and from listening to samples from Headfirst videos I am already anticipating a bunch of noise. Do you remember what size cap that was on the Little Sister? What you were saying about grounding a cap and touching different places to eliminate noise sounded like a great idea. I'm going to give it a try. Great video. I love the Little Sister.

@@oldguyjammin9732 I wish I had gone that route, adding V2 rather than the HF mod, because I hate to lose the tube buffered effects loop. I changed my baffle and speaker in that amp from 10 to 12" and tube buffering really sounds great when using the amp as a pedal/modeler platform. I bought their solid state alternative, but anticipate no way of making the foot switch work with it. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it!!!

Are these no longer handmade?? I swore the PT 20 and mini Dirty Shirley used to be handmade, hence the price tage. Then the Runt series was supposed to be Friedman’s “production” amp. Can someone correct me if I’m wrong on that? That will be a huge disappointment, if so. Just like I found out Friedman’s $4K guitars are made with nickel frets…. If that’s the case, then Friedman is very close to going down a road he swore he’d never go down. I own this amp, but have yet to open it up, so this surprised me.

Hand-wired or point to point wired is what they used to be. All the new 20 watt versions use PCB, but it is very thick board with large and few traces. More like military spec equipment than your average modern day amp. The quality and components are still head and shoulders above any of the large manufacturers. Friedman also has an outstanding warranty and outstanding customer service. And, of course, there is the sound and feel of the amps, that is the money shot!

@@oldguyjammin9732 Don't get me wrong...not saying it's not of good quality, or effects the sound. But, at what Friedman's charging, it's disappointing that it's not P2P. I don't mind Friedman changing his manufacturing methods to save money, as long as the customer get's to benefit from it. His amps haven't gotten cheaper....that's for damn sure. That's like his guitars... $4K for a guitar with nickel frets is incredibly poor taste. That's one of the reasons Ceriatone has a 10mo wait. But, I digress....This was an interesting video. Thanks for sharing.

@@phillamoore157 Dude, all of the PRS McCarty's, as an example have nickel frets. Nickel is not a sign of a cheap guitar or anything like that. This is an absurd take. Also, the Little Sister is what, 1400-1500? In today's amp world, that is incredibly cheap for an amp this beautifully laid out and easily serviced. Beyond the above, Dave has personally replied to every single email I have EVER sent the company - issues, questions - whatever. Snobbery at its finest right here, folks.
