ISTP female here, I took my car to a mechanic for a quote on a full brake job. His quote was too high, and I said, nevermind I'll do it myself. He laughed. Did a little research on you tube, purchased parts and tools, and got to work. Replaced wheel bearings, rotors, and pads for half his quote and I learned a valuable new skill. Who's laughing now? The victory lap was glorious!!!🛠🚗👩‍🔧

Example of how people can mistype. I'm an INTP but first thought I might be an ISTP. I've had your type of experience dozens of times--especially because I'm frugal (cheap). And from childhood I've been hands on--with construction and building toys--I love doing things with my hands. One of my hobbies is model railroading. But it's the approach that differs. I seldom develop skills to the level of an ISTP. I'll watch many videos and plan it. If it's a necessity, I'll usually get the job done, but it will take time--often with many breaks since it gets to me after a while. If a labor of love, I'll approach it with perfection, but otherwise I'll do it just good enough to get by. And in the end I'll have a sense of pride that is probably greater than that of the ISTP, since for him it comes as more natural.

You don’t sound like an at all. You sound very te. Te tends to gather information from sources and take it as truth then they start to apply that information to practical use. A ti user is more interested in how things work or if it will work out for them etc… some ti users will even take things apart to see how it works.

@@Normadic_Rider I didn't read the whole comment. I just agreed that learning to fix simple things like your car's brakes is a practical skill everyone should be able to tackle if their abilities allow for it. My ability to take apart my steam mop, fix the issue, and put it back together correctly with no outside information or manuals leaves me comfortable in my ISTP typing. You need specialized equipment and technical training for repairs on a one-ton mobile weapon before you take it on the road in the assumption that everyone else is following the rules that day also.
@Normadic_Rider
@Normadic_Rider 2 жыл бұрын
@@haleydoe2279 My point is if commenter was ti she have been smart in this approach. A ti user for instance would have thought of all the potential possibilities of what could go wrong. They would have analysed the situation carefully before coming to a firm decision. They would have taken the car to a more affordable mechanical store to get it fixed knowing they aren’t qualified in fixing cars instead of risking potentially damaging their car by watching a tutorial video on KZfaq that aren’t always 100% reliable information. That’s why ISTP/INTP are famously know for being tactical thinkers. But I could be wrong since I personally do not know the individual. Her comment does give me ISTJ vibes.

One thing a lot of people overlook with ISTPs is they think we just jump into action without thought. In reality we’ve either previously had a similar experience or we’ve been paying attention for awhile and can figure out the most efficient and effective way to deal with the situation at hand.

LOL... I've been living alone abroad since I was 25. And I have often these kind of imagination/simulation that if the country I am in right now is having a war with another country, what would I do? So, I would just simulate in my brain, things I'm going to retrieve from my house, checking whether I have phone no/email of my embassy, the closest embassy from my place, sea/air/land transportation plan to go back to my country and roughly how much money I would need, which clothes I should bring with me, etc. You know....just for fun. You're right...either we experience the similar (including experience it in your head) or we know exactly what would happen after a series of events occurred.

Same here. I grew up in China and taught myself French from scratch from ages 15-17, then I went to Canada for university with the intention of settling down there but obviously I didn’t tell anyone about my intentions. High school in China was intolerable so I became home schooled after 3 months (which was forbidden where I lived), and that ultimately gave me the flexibility of doing what was needed to get out of the country. I had zero friends during that time. Now I have friends that I really connect with, and I’m just feeling more like myself overall. Also, I sold cars alongside an ENTP. Worst dude I’ve ever dealt with. Like, terrible. I’m istp. I absolutely struggle identifying people’s intentions. I’m definitely too caught up in what I’m doing and can effect that I don’t tend to try to gain understanding and evaluate others. I tend to just let them be them. I’ve also noticed that that same exact trait makes me more willing to put up with and ignore what others consider abusive behavior. Being likely to deal well with abuse is another istp trait. Abusers play with fire though because when you finally cross the line with an ISTP, you’re toast. Anyhow, yes. Most ISTPs are terrible and very annoyed at politics

German Bro Well this in a fascinating question. You know how our low Fe causes us to kind of absorb others’ negative (and to a lesser extent positive) emotions, oftentimes causing anxiety? I imagine high Fe users are quite skilled at “tuning in” to people using Fi which must give them really good information regarding how that person feels at any given moment (in a very nuanced fashion, I assume), what that person wants, and perhaps what that person intends to do. The best example I can think of is to imagine how you use your high Se to be hyper-aware of the physical environment in real-time and maybe that’s what high Fe users are doing...although it’s an inadequate comparison bc Fe is a judging function and Se is used for information gathering. Other people often talk about another person’s “energy” and it’s always confused me a bit...maybe that’s bc us low Fe users don’t have good access to the tools those high Fe and high Fi users are utilizing? I think you’re accurate in thinking they are sensing the energy the other person is projecting and then using that info to better understand the others’ motivation/intent. Huh, I wonder if they can even read the emotions of an ISTP or an INTP better than we can understand or recognize our own feelings?? I imagine having high Fe feels like constantly being aware of the nuanced and ever-changing fluctuations in the moods of other people. I think I would hate it, haha.

INTPs look at objects or properties and feel the need to conceptually expand upon them until they end up with something completely different. ISTPs look at objects and predict the best course of action in dealing with it. This is why INTPs do better woth slower, static systems while ISTPs can observe and innovatively troubleshoot upon them, the classic Ne vs Ni dichotomy.

Good job Nathan! You are definitely right about ISTPs not encountering totally alien situations that they are improvising in. I do this all the time at work. The horse show is where the “test” is, and I train horses to have a basic set of tools and skills. Once they learn the basics then I just put them in a bunch of situations where they can use those tools and skills, including but not limited to what they are going to do in the show pen. So when it comes time to show you are prepared, but leave room for improvisation, because I didn’t teach them to memorize what they are going to do. That way they stay present minded and adaptable, and never check out and stop listening to you (which is common). You are also very right about not seeing people’s ulterior motives, I tend to be pretty blind to them. I need people to be upfront with me, and sometimes I even push people to do so. Whenever I find that I’ve been taken advantage of I start to do this Ti-Ni detective work and figure out exactly what they were doing and how they were doing it, and I use that like any other tool; to notice when they or someone else does it again. It take things that I noticed and maybe suspected, and see how they fit into the grand scheme of their behavior. Though, when that behavior happens in real time it’s not like I can say “I knew it all along,” because I didn’t, I just made an unbiased observation in the moment, and didn’t have enough information to make a decision about it.

You're correct when you say that TiSe core-want is to master their skill and craft but you forgot to mention that it absolutely doesn't have to be something "physical". As an INFP, I’ve thought about what you explain in your Se vs Ne quantum physics analogy many times before, and I actually think more like ST types based on what you say. I understand the "Ne way of thinking" you describe, but I can’t help but buy the second one more. I often think about stuff like that and I thought it was a Ti thing, searching truth for itself rather than empirical (which is also why I was confused for so long about my type). I’ve actually argued many times with my INFP father, who clearly defends the "Ne way of thinking" you describe. I’m pretty sure I’m an INFP though, I mean I heavily relate to Si and most of the usual Ne branching thinking pattern stuff (apart from the whole Fi-Te thing which seems clear to me). But I’ve always struggled with the idea of being Se PoLr. Oh well, I guess we really do use all 8 functions after all. And of course, MBTI being far from a bible, it could be explained by something else, or I could just be missing the point obviously. If anyone wants to discuss this feel free to comment, I’d be glad to read your thoughts. And as always, thank you for making this video.

I struggle with predicting other people’s intuitions. It’s the worst.. how do you deal with it? Usually, I would be ignorant about it, though I would be uncomfortable but still not knowing why, until someone tells me… then I would reach a breaking point and cut these people out.

I seriously loved this video. The last few points made me laugh out loud. But it's really accurate, one of the best overviews of ISTP that I've seen. I think that my great weakness as an ISTP is just because I also have ADHD, and so was never able to settle on one great interest to hone my skills in. So I never really mastered anything. An ISTP isn't all that impressive if they don't really master their skills and attempt to be the "jack of all trades" instead. But I had such a hard time settling on any one interest, or even a few (at least, that were within my financial capabilities to attain). Additionally, even though we are supposed to be masters of physical skills, I actually don't have very good hand-eye coordination, so I was actually bad at sports. The few that I was good or could have been good at were things I couldn't really do outside of school or other special circumstances (e.g. wall climbing). So I never pursued them. Now I have much more self-awareness and want to really put in that effort to master something and I don't know when or how I will be able to do so. But I really need to find that one thing that my ADHD brain could pursue consistently.

@RockaBilly The main criticism with MBTI is that it’s not scale-based like the Big Five, hence why a lot of people relate to more being in “the middle” of certain types especially given in certain circumstances (yes, regardless of you implying the order of the functions). How can you define “most of the time” when situations can vary very differently? MBTI is more useful if you lie strongly within one side, but it can get iffy if you lie somewhere like 52% P vs 48% J and could differently interpret functions (this is also why the Big Five is used more prevalently than MBTI when it comes to the field of psychology and personality). Not saying MBTI isn’t accurate but you have to take a lot of it with a grain of salt

My mom is an ISTP and, in a sort of bizarre love triangle that was a fixture in our household, she often was caught up in discussions with my ESTP father and his ENTP boyfriend. I found this quite hilarious to watch and it was just as described, with the ISTP and ENTP competing for intellectual dominance and the ESTP clowning around (although also very bright).

The argument part is definitely true because most ISTPs myself included tend to learn something thoroughly and if that is not done we will simply admit we lack knowledge which means that the only possible arguments you can get are ones where we already know everything about in great detail.

I was very excited to watch this because my brother is an ISTP and you did not disappoint. It's very hard to watch him be so loyal to creeps and also not act on his dreams because they involve too much uncertainty. And also not take advice from big sis because he doesn't trust my Ne.

He doesn't hesitate to join into my conversation with my friend (his older bro, an ISFP), he also joined us when we had lunch together, he talked to me for the 1st time like we're family hahaha.. lovely. And he acts cute when he greet me. I like being around ENFP. Charming.

You are 100% right about ENTP and ISTP, with my ENTP friend our "debates" always end like that. He constantly tries to twist,bend logic so it fits in different way and when I haven't studied/analysed that topic I always get owned in that. way.

My dad is an istp and this definitely captures him. As a ENFP, im very interested in physics but dad basically hears white noise if the subject come up. Also if you play apples to apples you'll be helped to know that an ISTP will always choose the straight forward option. So literal 😅🥰
