FOH engineer Chris Stephens walks you through the plugin chains he uses to mix Jason Aldean’s live sound, with special focus on vocals, drums, bass and electric guitars. Chris uses DiGiGrid MGB, a switch, and two SoundGrid Extreme servers in a redundant setup in order to seamlessly integrate hundreds of plugins with his SSL Live console.

vocal chain: NLS adds color de-esser is necessary for Esses his H EQ is hardly doing much his first compressor isn't taking off much neither is his 2nd compressor c6 is being used about how i would use it and the EQ on the VEQ is hardly doing anything. Sure there are a lot of plugins but he's not over processing. There is a difference.

Obviously a lot of his techniques can be copied and a lot of them can't be copied, not even by accomplished engineers on typical festival mixing desks like a Yamaha QL5 or Allen & Heath iLives...You just need a good bit too much processing power on most of his channels and busses for multicomping. But the essence of what he does with the plugins and where his work leads can be understood well by any decent mixer and there's a lot to be taken from this, even if you only have a Behringer X32 to mix with.

@likelystorybandnj
@likelystorybandnj 5 жыл бұрын
LaMont Davis The bass is definitively heard; the multi-band is only reducing a bit of sub-bass frequency when the kick hits. It does NOT bring down the whole bass signal. Using this technique actually makes everything clearer since there is less competition for that real low end.

you’re right he’s a pro he knows more than most of us and look at the job he has but for christ sakes he runs each instrument and vocal through 10 different things and then the 11 thing is to counteract the 10 different things he ran through. If he was a doctor he would be like hey take this pill to bring you down when too excited but then if you get to low take this pill will bring you back up. Maybe with the sound system he has and the board he has he can rely on hopefully the talent on stage instead of what talent he’s trying to use back at the board. You need talent at the board but this sounds a little much Like I have all this gear I have to use it all and yes I don’t care about your thoughts about my opinion that’s why it’s mine

literally downright unnecessary. Guys, don't be intimidated by all this because waves and a sound tech say "200 plugins". that's bullshit. first, you do soundcheck. set gains at unity eq while doing soundcheck set necessary gates and compressors on guitar and vocal channels make sure you kill feedback frequencies from the monitors get their monitors nice and loud set up verb and delay on channels necessary send those to the faders slightly eq the masterchain to the PA's done. this is bullshit.

Welcome to Loudness War. What happened to dynamics? I love some Wave Plugins but people tend to overuse them and here you have the Perfect Example of Overkill. Digital may be good but it also ruins a lot....
@jakobstumpf391
@jakobstumpf391 6 жыл бұрын
No...i think what the essence of his work actually is, is that you don't compress as much as people think. You compress more smartly. It seems like overkill, because he is able to run all these plugins live, that cost so much and use up so much computing power...but taking 1-2 db, then another 1-3 db, then another 2-4 db, he is actually compressing 1-5 db less than what mixers would have done since their widespread live availability in the 80s. 3 plugins doing 8db of gain reduction is smarter than ONE doing 10DB of gain reduction. I can totally follow that argument. Especially with the different timings of the compression.

yeah ....no...production costs actually go down with digital desks (by a factor of 2-10) and processing power like this. the waves grid racks cost a couple thousand....but try buying an awesome or even DECENT sounding desk in the mid 70s, then add outboard gear...it would have cost so incredibly much...Led Zeppelin and 70s bands studios had equipment a multitude of what this costs....Especially old live mixing desks...cost as much as a whole neighborhood of houses.

This is precisely why music sounds terrible. Overly processed and it kills the dynamic range while sucking dry all of the feel of the performance. Every large venue sounds terrible nowadays. It sounds like their mixing with graphs and math instead of good ol ears. Sounds about like broadcast mixing. Hey let's see how flat we can get everything because it will be perfect. Blah blah.

Not really. I see your point and it certainly applies to the way recorded music sounds nowadays. However, live sound is a different beast in a variety of ways. Everything's constantly changing and it's good to have a good amount of control over the dynamic range of each instrument/mic. He's actually compressing a lot but that doesn't mean it's going to translate as 'over compressed' when you hear it and it obviously changes from venue to venue, PA to PA, etc. As to 'seeing' rather than 'using his ears', that's not entirely true. I'm a sound engineer and it REALLY helps to have some visual feedback when there's a certain frequency that's starting to cause a lot of trouble and you have virtually 2 or 3 seconds to figure it out before it starts to become noticeable and awkward to the audience. In extreme case scenarios (especially on small venues, clubs, etc) it may even lead to feedback and it's good to have an RTA graph to know where the offending frequency/frequencies is/are.
