Every franchise from abroad tend to make things better in the asian market. Also the Chinese market is very competitive so they need to do something that will lure the local customers. Well the good news is the next largest Starbucks will be in Chicago, it’s currently under construction.

I can think of a few reasons. 1. Shanghai is very populated. 2. It's an affluent city. 3. There's very few artisan coffee shops in China so it's easier for Starbucks to get a lot of demand. 4. Western brands are seen as premium brands in Asian countries.

The largest Mcdonald's is in fact in America. It's actually just been recently rebuilt and made even larger actually. Chicago also has a brand new Mcdonald's flagship store. yeah, remember in the early 2000s, when it was all "posh" and "upscale". I went to Chicago around that time and the only people in line there were attorneys, Chicago Stock Exchange brokers, etc. All standing around in their fancy expensive suits sipping Starbucks and pecking away on their laptops, now it's a step up from fast food...
