Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries. #InsideEdition

Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.

1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched. 2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water. 3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer. 4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink. 5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp. 6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk. 7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you. 8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR. 9) Use common sense. Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

The scary part is not the jump, the scary part is swimming across. That why you should try quarries that arent too far from land. It happened tto me similarly at a wave pool which I thought was easy to swim across but I ended up loosing most of my strength before getting to the other side and I was almost forced to ask for help to the lifeguards. I realized my girlfriend who crossed first didnt have this problem since she was a proffessional swimmer. Be aware of your limitations guys

What happened to her son was a tragedy. Quarries can be very dangerous, but they’re also usually some of the funnest places to swim. Back in the 70’s I used to swim at a place called Sherkston quarry in Ontario that had a submerged train at the bottom.

@@timothyshort7925You missed the whole point of the video. What makes a quarry dangerous is that you don't know what's under the water. Underwater streams/rivers can produce an undertow that pulls you under, no matter how strong. You can hit a patch of cold water and lose feeling in your limbs. Something on the bottom could be leaching toxic fumes that make you faint - it's an old mining pit, who knows what's under there?

Wow so sad I think the point of this story is to be careful when jumping/diving/swimming into unknown waters. it doesn’t seem that specific to quarries other than the construction equipment that can be in there and suddenly cold temps that can lead to cramps. I think also the issue is some of these teens may be drunk and swimming while drunk is just a bad idea anywhere

Rivers can have random spots where the water is going downwards so hard and fast that things that will normally float will be sucked under and held under from the force and that's the cause of most drownings because its impossible to get out of that situation without a rope cause it's like trying to swim through air while being pulled down with extreme force

He got a cramp. It's in the description. It's pretty stupid for the mom to put up signs in quarrys when suffering a cramp in ANY body of water can kill. The mom and Inside Edition make it seem like there's something nefarious about quarrys that needs to be exposed. That's why they don't mention the cramp in the video, because anyone in their right mind would spot sensationalism.

So how is this any different than going swimming at a lake?? Temperature inversions don’t differ just because it’s a quarry, the water temperature is going to drop after a couple feet of depth in a lake as well. Lakes get deeper unexpectedly, it’s an over-reach to deem a quarry unsafe. If you swim out from shore on a lake it’s no less dangerous if you don’t know your own swimming abilities and you should always consider swimming with someone close by.

I grew up across the street from a quarry. The only time I ever got hurt was stubbing my toe really hard when getting a running start to jump off the main cliff. Since I was a kid, they've added spray paint to mark dangerous cliffs where rocks and other things may be lurking beneath the water below, several filters throughout to keep the water clean (I used to straight up swim through algae as a kid) and lifeguards at every popular swimming spot. They paddle around on canoes. You also need to sign a waiver when entering which wasn't there when I was growing up. The coolest but scariest thing I would do is swim to the island that we had. It's only about 100 yards away, but while swimming there you can put your head underwater and open your eyes to see a super deep, giant black hole. It always got cold when swimming over it.

Although they didn’t give the exact reason why he died, here’s my best conclusion: He jumped into the water, and he was met with cold temperatures, which caused his muscles to tighten and cramp. Because of this, he didn’t have the strength to bring himself up and to swim on the surface. He then drowned. This is the best I have right now.

Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.

The biggest issue with quarries is the rapid temperature change in the body after jumping into the cold water, many people don't realize this is a problem, cold shock causes breathing issues and vasoconstriction which significantly increases the chances of drowning or passing out, water in quarries is colder compared to that in the ocean due to lower salt levels(more the salt, easier it is for the water to increase in temperature with heat applied). The second one is hitting something in the water which is not visible.

Same thing happened to my best friend in 2008 we were swimming at a quarry in NJ in Carneys Point , there was an island about 50 years away and he decided he wanted to race and swim to it, he took off first before any of us were even ready by the time he got half way we knew something was off he went down then came back up and started to splash but still never yelled for help we knew he was in trouble another friend and me try to make it to him but by the time we got there he went down and never came back up . Took the cops 45’mins to get there and another hour to find his body smh RIP Cory I still miss u to this day

Didn't mention what the cause of death was though. Did he strike something while swimming across? Did the temperature change and his body froze up?

A strong swimmer wont drown from a cramp...Obviously he shouldn't have tried to swim across if he didnt feel confident to do it. So why blame the quarry? It could have happened at a pool or beach.

+KlixTrio what makes you think he didn't feel confident enough to swim across it?? I don't believe you know what his thought process was at the time.

its in the description, but i think they didn't really mention it because the fact he was in a quarry had nothing to do with it. he had a cramp and was too far out... which could happen in any large water body.

We swim in them when I was a kid and the biggest problem/fear we had was water moccasins. Some of those snakes where huge, about 4’ long and some as big around as a softball and very aggressive.

I used to swim a lot in the open sea and sometimes very far out (I remember once 2 lifeguards coming towards our little group advising us to head back). On one occasion, I got a cramp in my legs and I thought, "this is bad". So, in that moment I let myself "drown" for a moment. Essentially I relaxed my body as I was submerging deeper and deeper into the water. When I felt my body sort of recovered, I swam back up and continued to shore. On another occasion, I got so tired but when I felt this feeling catching up to me, I'd make my body flat on the water with my face up and relax for a bit, then I'd continue. I remember that on one of those times I had to do this like 3 or 4 times before making it to shore. Afterwards, I got more fit and didn't have this happen again. So, I was especially reckless as a beginner.
