Rex, Just wanted to tell you how much value i place on your videos. I'm new to shooting and even newer to long range shooting. After watching one of your videos, I was surprised to see George Banke. Ive known George off and on for 40 years, from bicycle racing , gokart racing , and now shooting. Thank you for opening the Banke door again for me. I shoot with George on a regular basis and I'm continuing to learn from him just I did with bicycle racing, gokart racing and now shooting. Thanks for all your videos and keep up the good work. John

Interesting conversation throughout, though I wish it didn't cut out right when the subject matter was getting really fascinating! Although I understand the prudence of avoiding potential controversy, I really value hearing the opinions of informed people. That's why I'm here! Thanks for letting us listen in for a few minutes, George and Rex! Lots of useful tidbits to be gleaned from hearing experts talk to one another about their subject.

The IoR and Schmidt glass was the same, the Hensoldt better. I do not regret buying the Schmidt. I can see why it is the default choice of many militaries the world over.

Just put a kind of rifling in the tube of a spring recoil stock so when the rifle goes off and the bullet makes the rifle twist then the rifling in the tube with an opposing twist making the rifle twist free. An equal and opposite reaction.

It's interesting to note that the .408 Chey-Tac case capacity (10.32cm^3) is pretty much right in the middle between the 7.62x51mm (3.64cm^3) & the .50 BMG (18.97cm^3), yet provides a longer effect effective range than either of these service cartridges to modern, high-BC projectiles. Is this not the pre-eminent, modern, tested, beltless case in this intermediate zone? If a threat force arms industry were to work on a modern set of cartridges & small arms which is largely a _critique_ of the NATO cartridge & weapons families, they might do so by "working the seams", i.e. seeking overmatch or advantage in certain range bands which are perceived weak spots. Specifically, the cartridges which "criticise" NATO forces might tend to be those which are _intermediate_ between current NATO service cartridges. So, starting from the bottom: 1) a modern, high-pressure ~8mm cartridge with superior range & penetration to 9x19mm, COAL >33mm, for a light, single-stack, slimline service pistol. 2) A PDW round intermediate between 9x19mm & 5.56x45mm, supersonic to between 150-300m. For instance, a trimmed-neck .300 AAC BLK with a 110gr 0.795" Sierra HP Varminter, COAL ~41mm, 1800-2150fps, 802-1144fps, 233-314m supersonic from an 8-11" barrel. Superior ballistics to an M1 Carbine in a much smaller, ideally holsterable package. 3) An infantry rifle cartridge intermediate between 5.56x45mm & 7.62x51mm, but with supersonic range about equal to the latter. Something like the 6.8mm SPC case stretched a little & accommodating longer bullets, so maybe with the 7.62x51mm's COAL of ~71mm. 4) So, what I've been driving at, is that in this sort of a critical process, the .408 Chey-Tac is an important case, because it is here, it is now, & it is right in that sweet spot between .30 cal & .50 cal case capacities. I believe it is noteworthy that the Russians are interested in this case. If you were building a future force structure & family of small arms to "work the seams" on Western forces, would you want to minimise the number of cases used? Surely you would. Therefore, in the above scenario, would you not consider adopting the same case for both the new MMG/HMG, as well as for the new long-range sniper rifle? Surely you would, even if different ammo was to be used for the two systems. Your industry might benefit from using the same standard base case for the two systems, even if the cartridges for the two systems were not to be the same (e.g. necked-up for the MMG/HMG, & necked-down for the sniper rifle). On the NATO side, the GD LWMMG is a specific effort to fill the gap between 7.62x51mm & .50 BMG, _while using calibers also suitable for long-range-sniper rifles_, i.e. .300 & .338 Norma, & .338 Lapua. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Medium_Machine_Gun Note however, that these cartridges, while significantly larger than 7.62x51mm, are not really _intermediate_ between it & .50 BMG, as is .408 Chey_Tac. I'll just close off this speculation by saying that if I were the Russians, & I was performing this critique of NATO forces & small arms families, & I was "working the seams" in the aforementioned fashion, & I had recognised the particular utility of the .408 Chey-Tac case in this critique for use by a new long-range sniper rifle... ... I would also be interested to consider its use in a new MMG/HMG, for use both by a future iteration of the infantry rifle company, as well as vehicle-mounted. I wonder what, if anything, the Russians (or Chinese, or others) are doing with machine guns in the space between .30 cal & .50 cal.

The newest generation 40 mm scopes coming from IOR certainly feature tier one glass, it is still very hard to beat Schmidt and bender when it comes to mechanical refinement. IOR scopes are still constructed in an eastern block style which tends to be quite rugged and maybe not quite as refined as some. It is certainly interesting to see the level of optical performance of these new scopes and how far they've come since they made East block military optics back in the day. A lot of IOR's old stuff could be categorized in the mid tier 2 category, but this new high-end stuff is amazing in my humble opinion.
