Everyone naturally produces earwax. It’s a completely normal process, and the wax is beneficial because it can clean your ear. But sometimes the wax can build up, which can cause irritation, muffled hearing, or hearing loss. When that happens, it’s time to see a doctor.
Insider’s Caroline Aghajanian, Joe Avella, and Mikala Jones-Fielder visited Dr. Geoffrey Trenkle, an otolaryngologist at the Los Angeles Center for Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy, to learn more about earwax and have their ears professionally checked. Dr. Trenkle can safely remove earwax by using either a curette or a vacuum device. He suggests to never try over-the-counter options to remove earwax and to stop using Q-tips because they may cause a perforated eardrum, which can lead to a risky surgery.

I just got my ears cleaned and now it feels like the world has become a lot louder than I used to know. Everyone should get their ears cleaned professionally at least once, the results are just amazing. It did not hurt at all, but it tickled me a lot that I tried to hold back my giggle.

I had my ears cleaned today, one piece of the wax was about an inch wide. Found such wax in both ears. When the doctor took it out, i never heard so clearly before. I had to ask my dad to talk quietly because my ears are hurting. Wow

Being someone who sometimes makes ear plugs out of wet paper towel or even cardboard bits to block out noise to sleep, I know about losing bits of paper in my ear canal. So I learned from my dad a few years back that an ear bulb is an essential tool to keeps my ears clean and healthy. If I go to the beach or swim in a pool for a while, when I get home it's a good time to give my ears a good squirt of warm water with a bit of alcohol & acetic acid to prevent and clear any slight infections. I was so amazed the first time I blew my ears out. It was amazing!

Ear deposits have to be thoroughly softened by hydration for best removal, overnight, at least. I'm sure there are videos of using an "ear bulb 'syringe' to blow out impacted (but moistened) ear deposits. Well worth knowing how to do!

A roach flew in my ear before, it's one of the worst feelings ever. It literally forces it's way inside and shakes and bites. The roach also pushes on your ear drum because its trying to find a way out. I was crying the whole time, it hurt so bad and it was so uncomfortable. I had to get my ear flushed out with oil and water.

I get my ears cleaned every half year. It feels amazing :) Yall should also try. Ps: If you want it to be easy, drop a drop of olive oil down your ear. Dont push it in, just let it run. Olive oil softens up the earwax so it makes it easier to remove :)

Many years ago when I was about 17, almost 18, had my ears fill up with wax and muffle my hearing. Went to the doctor. He filled this giant stainless steel syringe with warm water and then just put it against my ear and pushed the water in pretty hard. I didn't think that was really the best approach, but it worked.

My very first experience with ear wax was when I was racing horses and also working in a fabricating shop. While driving race horses you gets lots of dirt that goes in your ears. Then while using ear plugs they tend to push things you can’t see back in. Doctor put some oil in there and waited about 15 minutes then flushed with saline. I had huge hard pieces come out. Now a days I just flush my ears once a year softly with warm water and it works great.

I did this for the first time last year at 22 years old after I felt I had hearing difficulty in one side of my ear.. turns out I had loads of wax in both of my ears. After the procedure I literally felt overwhelmed as I could hear every single thing from footsteps to clock ticking. I had water getting into my ear while showering a few days ago and it caused the wax to completely gunk up my ear canal. Hearing on my right ear was down to maybe 30% or something. Had gone to the ENT today and he removed a HUGE chunk of earwax, like 2 cm at least. I used to think I had bad hearing because of live concerts, but after the wax removal I had like superhuman hearing. I literally heard my pants rub against the hair on my legs while walking. It's like getting new glasses, you don't realize what you miss until you see/hear the difference. Highly recommend it. Took 5 minutes and is covered by basic health insurrance.

All you have to do each time you shower is lean your head to the side and let the water enter your ears. You don’t need anyone to extract your ear wax, you can actually do it yourself. The warm water breaks it loose. Why don’t any of you do this? I see so many people on the comment threads not talk about this and act like cleaning your ears out is a new experience. I don’t get how this is all new for some of you

@@mannyrodriguez3933 bad advice. as a medical student, using water to clear ear cannal too often gonna makes your ear have a moist surface. moist surface is an ideal condition for bacterial growth which makes you vulnerable to bacterial infection which is diffuse otitis externa. also warm water can cause dizziness because it trigger vestibular system on ear

@@Snowfirez been doing it for over 30 years, haven’t ever had a problem. No dizziness, no no bacterial growth. No nothing. You don’t leave the water in your ears anyway, if you’re assuming that’s what I’m doing then you are misunderstanding. Of course wipe your ears out the best you can with something dry. But in my experience there’s been MORE GOOD from allowing water into the ears to clean them out once in a while than not doing anything and letting it build up. And I’m sorry but you very much can clean your ears out with water. I don’t care what medical terminology you tack on here. If the person has small and narrow ear canals where nothing can come out very well, then maybe I’d understand what you’re saying. But on a case by case basis, you can definitely use water as a way to clean ears. It’s not that bad for it

I got my ears impacted a few years back and went to a doctor for checkup. He gave ear drops to soften the hardened wax and was told to come back in a week iirc. Then he got the wax out by pouring in some liquid (can't remember what it was) and picking out the wax. Afterwards I could hear much clearer that loud noises made it hurt. 😅 So I put small cotton balls to lessen my hearing. Since then I have stopped using cotton buds and just use ear picker very carefully when I clean my ears.

Ear wax overtime becomes damp, loses its moisture and natural stance. Meaning, ear wax can harden, turn mould like appearance and actually cause infection and stop formation of new healthier wax!

I usually try to soak my ears in water without dumping it in as fast as I can, it works for me since my ears are wider.

There are ear cleaners in pharmacies as well as grocery stores with pharmacies. Just follow the directions; soak your ears with the solution and then rinse the ears out with warm (not hot) water using the blue rinsing thing in the box. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than seeing a doctor!

I used q-tip since I was a kid. The bad thing about it if it's your first time cleaning your ear with a q-tip it's push all your earwax to your eardrum. I got my ear professional clean and the doctor said i don't have earwax, and I explain what I do since I was a kid. And the doctor agree😄

Ive had a weird build up of wax before. Especially when i was a kid. It go to the point we used oroxide on my ears and my eardrums bursted with the realese of pressure. And i had to take eardrops after that for about 2 weeks or so. And recently i had to get my ears clean by me pedi because of a build up
