I just came back from visiting Chicago for the first time. I never understood the appeal of the Chicago hotdog with all those ingredients, but after taking a bite, I have converted.

Born and raised in Chicago, moved away a decade or so ago. I was never a Portillo's fan while living there, I would always just go to a neighborhood place and grab one. That being said, once you move away Portillo's tends to be one of the few places that you can get a taste of home and it not be butchered beyond belief.

Dec.1998. I got married and me and my Wife ran out of food during the reception, so her and I went to Gene and Judes. She could not get out of the car due to her wedding gown so I went in wearing my Tuxedo. Everyone stared and I said that we ran out of food at our wedding. Folks in line and the Manager were so cool that they let me in front while waving at my wife. They gave us 8 hot dogs on the house. We went to our apartment so hungry that we ate so fast that we realized we still had our wedding clothes on. Thanks, Gene and Jude's!

Fun fact: Superdawg was displayed in a report about Hot-dogs by PBS about 25 years ago. And the 2 dawgs on the top were already there. Amazing!

For a Chicago dog you need a boiled all beef hotdog in a steamed popyseed bun with yellow mustard, sweet green pickle relish, white onion, tomato wedges, pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt. Nothing else can be called a Chicago dog. The one ingredient you can skip is the tomato but even then it is modified.

Soul- never had a Chicago Hotdog (except vicariously here) and it could be I've gone overboard with celery salt in other contexts but I just find it kind of overpowering. But I am going to visit Chicago again one day and focus on these Chicago style hotdogs (and a lot of other unique cuisine that city has to offer) and maybe be convinced!

I don't work there but I tried to get hired there years ago. but I had an eye appointment that couldn't be rescheduled. when I called back to reschedule. she never answered my call. but their whole entire menu is definitely 😋 last week I had your Polish sausage, onion rings & big beef . If the tomato doesn't have flavour, it's probably because it's out of season and poorly grown for quantity, not quality.

This is probably going to be the case with the vast majority of fast food style tomatoes (I'm looking at you Subway). You can tell by how pale they are, and yeah, those aren't enjoyable tomatoes. No flavor.

Problem is most modern tomatoes are flavorless. If you get a vine ripened tomato in season and just sprinkle some salt and eat, you'll know why it's one of the most important vegetable. Which is also why when I use it in a cooked dish, I prefer unsalted canned tomatoes.

I can not believe Jimmy's Red Hot was not on the list. They have been serving up their iconic Chicago Style hotdogs for over 69 years. They operated out of the same building, on the west side of Chicago, since I was just a little boy. Talking about "got it down to a science", Jimmy's perfected their delicious dogs.

I have a Portillos near where I live in Arizona... True story... Had a roommate once, all of his family lived in Chicago so he was really excited to go back home (he hadn't been there since a child) and try, "genuine hot dogs" as he put it. His brother was amping him up before his trip out there... Two weeks later when he comes back he tells me how they took him straight to Portillos, failing to remember he had one within a few miles of him.

And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these choices. I will say that Portillos are closer to a chain and make way more food than just hotdogs. Superdawg is just amazing!

Superdawg is definitely the best hot dog. There’s something about the taste of the hot dog that makes it delicious and it’s filling, it’s not skinny. I could pick it out in a line if hot dogs by taste. The pickle too is delicious and snappy.

Not sure if this was mentioned but Vienna Beef is the go to Chicago hotdog. Red Hot Chicago is the second most common hotdog brand served here. Also as mentioned, a few places do their own thing, like Superdawg uses David Berg hotdogs (made with their own recipe). Personally I’d go with a char dogs, it adds flavor and in my opinion are the best. One other thing is I’d recommend trying a Chicago Francheezie style hotdog, it’s wrapped in bacon and deep fried with melted Cheddar or American cheese.

Nobody has mentioned Paradise Pup in Des Plaines on River Road. Great hot dogs and even better char cheddar burgers that are absolutely to die for.

Born right near super dawg. Basically any Chicago area restaurant has a good dog . Super Dawg, has a very good menu and try the burgers with cheese. Delicious.

I'd eat at any of the 3 joints any time. My faves are, Superdawg, Portillo, and then Gene and Jude's. Portillo is good, in fact probably my overall fave due to how many other delectable items you can buy while at a Portillo location. Supedawg and Gene and Judes are nostalgic as all get out in addition to serving up super tasty dogs.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST WAY TO EAT A TOMATOE : 1. Be 8 years old. 2. Have a good salt shaker. 3. Wait till the hottest time of the day. 4. Sneak out to Dad's garden and get the biggest, reddest one. Lick the outside of the tomatoe, dirt and all. 5. Salt. 6. Forget being neat! (Lol, there was NO sneaking, us kids were in that garden all day, and the poor radishes NEVER stood a chance getting back into the house!)
