Amazing, how everything is automated nowadays. We still do the whole thing manually and we do hundreds of tests a day very skillfully. Working in NHS is going to very easy,😋 is it?

We still do most culturing manually, although we have something similar to a wasp. It just breaks down all the time 🤣 pointless piece of machinery

@MrOosie The one thing the wasp does to me all the time is test my bloody patience. I swear when it works it's amazing but see when it breaks 20 minutes before the end of the day I just wanna kill the bloody thing 😂, seems to be a common thing in the lab where if anything breaks the blame automatically goes to me even when I'm off on annual leave 😂😂

If you want to be a lab assistant you don't really need any qualifications, though you don't get much pay either, and it has no career progression. If you want to be a biomedical scientist, you legally need to register with the HCPC. There are two things you need in order to be allowed to register. First you need a degree that is accredited by the IBMS. Non accredited degrees are no good and will require you to complete top up modules which can be a costly and time consuming process. Secondly, you need to complete an HCPC registration portfolio, where you work in a lab and collect evidence that you understand all the different parts of a biomedical scientists work, ranging from scientific and professional knowledge, ethics, data, communication, health and safety, research and others. There are 10 modules and each require 3 pieces of evidence. People can do their portfolios either during a work placement in a lab for a year after their second year of university, turning their course into a four year course, or they do the portfolio whilst working after university (typically as a lab assistant). Both are competitive positions to get, but it's easier to get a place to do your portfolio as part of a of placement, though students don't normally get paid despite doing the same work as everyone else.
