(3 Aug 2017) INSIGHTS INTO PRINCESS DIANA'S LIFE BEHIND CLOSED PALACE DOORS FROM HER FORMER BODYGUARD KEN WHARFE
Former royal bodyguard Ken Wharfe says his time working for the late Princess Diana was an enjoyable, if sometimes challenging role.
Wharfe worked for the Princess between 1986 and 1994.
Speaking fondly of the princess, he recalls how she would sometimes slip away from his protection.
"It was a challenge, yeah, we had the slip occasionally, it wasn't deliberate, maybe sometimes it was, maybe in a fit of pique, maybe she did get fed up with me or maybe had a point to make, but that's part and parcel of the job which I enjoyed," he says.
"I was very lucky to travel with her for eight years around the world in some extraordinary places, but that's one thing. What admired me more about Diana wasn't that, was the way that she seriously attracted herself to those that really wanted her to do something and she did come back to the office and did make something work and was genuinely interested, this wasn't a job of work just to tick the box, oh I've been to that charity, she made things work, made people feel special."
Wharfe is a contributor to documentary, "Diana: In Her Own Words," providing commentary on recordings of the late Princess made by voice coach Peter Settelen at Diana's Kensington Palace residence in 1992 and 1993, just after Diana and Charles separated.
The tapes were made to help Diana practice public speaking as she struck out on her own, and feature the late princess candidly discussing her personal life, commenting on their sex life, her fury at her husband's mistress and her love for another man.
Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, in 1981 and the couple had two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. They separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, the year before Diana died in a car crash in Paris, aged 36.
Charles married his longtime paramour Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005.
In the recordings, Diana also describes confronting her husband and Parker Bowles at a party - a moment Wharfe says marked "the real beginning of the end" of the royal marriage.
"She realized there was no chance of reconciliation," he said. "There was only one direction, and that was divorce."
"This was the occasion of Camilla's sister's birthday and she and the Prince of Wales went to this party, which to me was slightly surprising, because Diana must have known this was going to be a difficult one, knowing that Camilla would be there, but that wasn't for me to say, I did my bit," he recalls.
"We eventually confronted Charles and Camilla, who were sat on a sofa talking somewhere else in the house. Diana, remarkably calm, said to Camilla, 'Look, don't treat me like an idiot, I know what's going on' and at that point, Camilla said something really strange, which I said in the film, never really understood it, she said 'It's ok for you, you've got two wonderful boys'. Now I knew at this particular point, any chance of any reconciliation here was seriously out of the question and as I say in the film, this was then the real beginning of the end."
Wharfe - who has a new book coming out on his time with the princess - says the documentary is a valuable reminder of Diana's role in "the reshaping of the monarchy."
Her death unleashed a public outpouring of grief in Britain and around the world. The royal family, whose stoic reserve suddenly seemed out of touch, has since softened its stiff upper lip.
William and Harry both campaign for more open discussion of mental health, and have spoken of their own struggles after their mother's death.

She had mental health issues, but that's not something to be ashamed of. Some of her friends said she was very emotionally insecure and immature. Paul Burrell described her as moody and volatile. She had symptoms of a borderline disorder, but that doesn't mean she was crazy. She was just emotionally damaged by her childhood, and by the pressure she had to handle.

Diana grew from naive to mature to shrewd. It was an unanticipated move no one in the royal circles thought possible or acceptable, stuck in their rigid tradition. However, Diana was fighting a lost cause, fighting for Charles heart...and she had lost to Camilla whom Charles married after Diana's murder via car accident. The story is spun in each royal generation, each with its own twists and turns. It is the never ending story of the powerful, maintaining power over the many, one way or another.

'Murder' by a car 'accident' - more like inadequate security, as her bodyguard Ken stated, 'Diana rejected the Queen's offer to keep her round-the-clock Scotland Yard protection' year before, 'Our department had the care of her personal safety for some 15 years: Fayed’s crew were in charge of her security for just 8 weeks before she died' - Not wearing seat belts, a driver who wasn't a chauffeur & had been drinking, & also Dodi's liking for cars to be driven faster - A preventable tragedy.

The book is balanced too; doesn't attempt to deify Diana - she could be 'difficult', like anyone, she was trapped in a bad situation, as was Charles, tho' Diana was younger & more isolated - both families pushed the marriage together, more about 'duty' than considering the 2 people involved, very sad.

Thank you, Ken, for defending Diana's legacy spoken by Diana in her historical tapes...Diana had no one to defend her in the royal family and that is what was really shocking to the whole world...if they had only seen her point about what she was sincerely all about, their popularity would have soared, but their jealousy is what destroyed them at that time...she left two exceptional boys and thus, saving the dynasty...Camilla did not saved the monarchy, she rescued Charles, the mouse who lets his 135 mouthpieces do all his talking, which if controversial, all he has to do is deny what somebody said in his name...just like what they both did with Penny Junor when her book on the gossip from the Camilla - the untold story - and accused Diana of being mentally ill...Camilla was the dysfunctional one along with Charles.

The thing that let Diana down was that she most likely had an undiagnosed mental illness (which is not in any way a knock on her) and whether because of them being old fashioned or because it was the 80's or for whatever reason the royal family were too daft or too cold to recognize that. So instead she was treated like someone who couldn't just have a "stiff upper lip" and was "seeking attention" and thrown to the wolves. She was never at any point in her life treated with true love and affection because even her parents just used her a vessel to achieve their goals which is why the first time she went to them with her issues they told her, "you musn't let the side down." One of the worst things that happened to her though is that when she went to the therapist and he told her that there was nothing wrong with her. Yes Charles is a lot to blame in this situation and him cheating on her was horrible (but arranged marriages in themselves are horrible) but the thing is that someone who has bulimia and is doing things like cutting themselves and throwing themselves down the stairs (self-harm) due to external factors has a mental illness because those aren't normal responses to things like cheating. I would know because I've done those things (well anorexia) and since getting a diagnosing and being on the correct medication I am so much better and can handle that stuff without resorting to those things. They weren't cries for attention they were cries for help and it's just sad that no one was there to listen to them. Hell I would put money on the fact that even her relationship with Dodi was a cry for help because it was just meant to wound Charles in the most damaging way she knew how.
@Jaqen-HGhar
@Jaqen-HGhar 4 жыл бұрын
btw we have to get away from the stigma of mental illness because saying someone has one shouldn't be an "attack" on them or an accusation. People being scared to get help or say they have one stops so many people from getting the help they need. It's why it's a breath of fresh air to see her sons come out and admit to struggling with it.

Diana needs somebody to stand up for her. They are trying to tear her down even in death. She was a decent human being who was fedd up with pretending and lying any further. 15 years was more than enough. If she had lived a few more years in to her forties we would have seen how important her work was regardless of Charles and the sycophants around him. So convenient for him that she is out of the way and they can spin this story about his “real” love and what a wonderful king he will be. Queen will resist to have him step up as long as she can because she knows that Diana was right about his character unsuited to be the sovereign. Let William mature a few more years and enjoy his family before his father kicks the bucket. Charles will be the oldest and have the shortest time on the throne in modern history.

None of us is perfect, but thankfully *we* don't get judged by a world of distant voyeurs. Diana & Charles were pushed into a 'duty' marriage, both were unhappy, both unable to cope with each other - probably worse for the younger, isolated & cheated-on Diana - but a bad situation for all. Wonder why the queen didn't kick Charles ass when he started his affair with horseface? Diana was an exquisite wife and mother and would have made a fabulous royal for the entire family. If Charles had been my son, I would have offered up some slim choices for that boy. Every time I see that horse faced thing on his arm, I waive him aside. He failed a no-brainer test. He would never ever be considered for the King position. I know of Harry's skeleton's, however, he would make the best king of all. He is turning into the very best guy in the monarchy. He is just the salt of the earth who stands up to those who would tell him how to live and who to date. He's the guy next door who helps you move the sofa away from the wall so you can vacuum behind it. Then, you have great conversation over tea. A lovely young man...

Claudine Toler The Queen did nothing, because that is how the upper class of British people live, and accept it. Diana was supposed to accept Camilla, and Kanga, and Janet Jenkins ( his other two mistresses, all three were present at his wedding to Diana), keep her mouth shut, have a lover of her own, and keep up with the appearances. Diana could not do it. Camilla's husband knew what was going on. As did Lady Kanga's husband. Both close friends of Charles. To them it was an honor that the Prince of Wales was sleeping with their wives. Half of the current Royal marriages are a farce. The British media know that, as do the upper class people, no one is allowed to talk about it, and the media are silenced. A hypocrisy at the large scale. The late nasty Queen Mum, used to allow Camilla and Charles to use her residences for their meetings. Camilla had sent Lady Kanga packing, and Elizabeth Buchanan. Elizabeth was another lover of Charles, as was Sue Townsend. According to Janet Jenkins, she and Charles had cheated on both Diana and Camilla for 21 years. Janet has a son with Charles, he is only few months younger than Harry, and is a spitting image of Charles and William. The British media are not allowed to mention either the mother, or the son. I have a photo of him, featured in the North American newspapers, when Janet gave her interviews to them, a few years ago.

Wasn't Charles already in love with Camilla, but forced into a 'duty' marriage? - Wasn't entirely his, or Diana's, fault that the marriage derailed - the Windsors & the Spencer's pushed 2 incompatible people together for the sake of the monarchy, but it wasn't the right thing to do.

I do not know of any mother that has been able to stop her adult son from having affairs. My brother did. My mother hated as she was really fond of his first wife. Now he knew Mom did not approve and my former sister in law knew Mom took her side but that did not stop him. The same goes for the Queen of England. He already had the Duchy of Cornwall so she could not stop his income and the British constitution says he will be next king. So, really nothing she could do but disapprove which she did. Her only flaw is she blamed Diana too for also having affairs even though his affair had already gone on for ears before Diana strayed.

Thank -you Ken for telling it like it is. Diana took on the job of Royal Consort with little or no help, and did a wonderful job at it. Perhaps too wonderful for her husband to understand, after all HE was the direct Royal line, and HE was the intelligent one in the couple. People wanted to see her more than him on tours, and he grew to resent it. Camilla follows behind him, doesn't make a move without him, (because she's still not sure what she is doing), and this is what he likes. Besides, she is like a mother to him, which he didn't really have when he was younger either. So she's a wife, companion and mother, all rolled up in one. Diana had warmth, people skills, and beauty combined. Camilla would make a freight train jump tracks and take a dirt road.,Boy, those sayings, "Love Is Blind", and "Love is in the Eye of the Beholder", they must be true.

Thank God love is blind; if it saw the ugliness of the judgmental heart, it'd wither. How stupid & childish to value people on how they look; 1,000s of years of evolution to get us - here?

Of course since retiring Royal service Ken Wharfe and Paul Burrell both making a mint. It's in their own self interest to milk from the sacred cow. Included here as always the shrewd Andrew Morton.

This was when Harry was still more popular than a pop star - before Meghan came in to try and dismantle the monarchy, in my humble opinion. I love Diana and I feel that William, Kate and Harry were a wonderful Trio. 💜💕💙

So you would prefer Harry remain a 3rd wheel, the eternal bachelor with and no personal happiness because that is the fiction you like. Who do you know that is really happy remaining single hanging out with their sibling and their sibling's partner? Nobody likes being a 3rd wheel..

Harry chose Meghan as his wife. I think it is time for us to support Harry and his choices in life. He is a grown man and chose best for him

It's against the rules. The royals don't even have the right to vote. They must remain completely void of politics in every form.

Bodyguards are supposed to protect not to talk about what she was doing. Its a shame there is this culture of greed. Priests.doctors and body guards must not sell stories about people. Shame on you.

Part've me agrees, but I'm not sure it's about greed; could be wanting to set the record straight, as you see it. If people didn't tell we wouldn't know the 'truth', or at least another side of the truth - but why do we need to know about the lives of strangers; it's a strange thing, celebrity..
