Millions of people in the UK have trouble sleeping, and Guardian reporter Leah Green is one of them. Like many insomniacs, she has tried all the at-home remedies, sleep hygiene and gadgets designed to cure her sleep problems. She finds out why it is so difficult to conquer insomnia, and why good treatment is so hard to come by

I know I do not have sleep apnea I'm the victim of violent violent crimes abuse of power from the doctors office to the NYPD in Manhattan DA that protected all crimes and then we're pretty open they broke laws and the Manhattan DA knew that too just like in the Jeffrey Epstein case more than complicity it's.I know I do not have sleep apnea I'm the victim of violent violent crimes abuse of power from the doctors office to the NYPD in Manhattan DA that protected all crimes and then we're pretty openly broke laws and the Manhattan DA knew that too just like in the Jeffrey Epstein case more than complicity it's sickening Please Google Dr Fagelman assault (youtube). I endured a Running punch to my head a hole in my retina since then I can't not sleep. That was over seven years ago. After September 11 I have insomnia sometimes I'd have it from the stress of being an activist but when I was a medical patient and I became a human punching bag for another doctors employee and employee who was not fired and employee came out followed me Menace me me believe me and I let Shane her boss took it to the Internet gaslighting lying and then into the deposition room they both committed perjury and that I'm not alleging they committed perjury and that's the truth. I stay up I can't fall asleep I fall asleep I wake up I cannot get back to bed I also worry about neurological problems. I'm having problems with going to the bathroom now I know I have a ton of fibroid tumor's but could it also be tied to the brain and the neurological system and my body is having such trouble specially because I can't sleep so I can't repair mind-body. In New York City in the USA I pay over $1000 for health insurance and it seems like the worst care terrible rip off in New York State and New York City protects corrupt MD as if they're pedophile priests and deserve to be above the law. Every step of the way I go about my place in New York and see signs if you were salt this person or that person or taxi driver but there's no protection for if you assault or violate a patient. Why is that? The violence the Buse the violations of my body my patient rights running punched my head she also shook my head back-and-forth via my hair pulling me and created a ton of floaters in my eyes besides the whole she punched in my right now then I don't sleep my eyes are so dry they hurt I'm stuck in fight and flight because they lied and lied via their representatives online from yelp to my own KZfaq channel so I feel I have to monitor stay up I'm stuck in fight and flight adrenal overload and I had gained a ton of weight which is put more pain on my already messed up joints. I have such severe neck pain and degenerative disease in my neck as well as bulging herniated disc's. I became so hopeless I gradually started gaining lots and lots of weight. I had to become an oil free hope plant-based person to start healing I'm not 100% but I'm moving in that direction as close as I can at each day hoping it will help me heal so many problems I have in my body that are even more exacerbated by lack of sleep and I do not have sleep apnea

I have insomnia for seven years, but I think that I understand the problem since one week. I had the click moment. The same happened before I stopped smoking. Insomnia means that you are scared to not sleep, which makes you sleepless. What do you think that happens when you do not sleep? Well, i thought that people did not like me when I was tired and grumpy, and that I was not able to do the things that I wanted to do. Yes, maybe they are true. Sometimes things such as insomnia happens to you in life, but it can also be a disease. When this happens, you are not the best version of yourself anymore and this is hard to accept. I wanted to be kind and full of energy, but this is not always, often not, the reality and I could not accept that. I would recommend to go to your appointments without sleep, accept that you are not the best version of yourself and make the best of it. Showing up shows that you care. You will sleep better some day, but maybe not this week. All the best :)

Cheers for this, been searching for "why am i sleeping so much all of a sudden" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Panddison Initial Preponderance - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a great one of a kind guide for curing your insomnia minus the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my work buddy got great results with it.

Might be metabolic, I was over exercising, under eating not enough carbs had nutritional deficiencies etc (thought I was being healthy) putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and its doing what its meant to be doing.

My main problem with insomnia is that when I get comfortable with being in bed, I start thinking about how much time of sleep I'll get if I end up falling asleep soon, and as a result I start getting anxious and I count the time in my mind. I visualise the clock in my head and am really reluctant to check the time on my phone because that would just make everything worse. Seems like the only realiable way for me to fall asleep is to get really tired by doing various things during the day and just jump in the bed without having the energy left to think about anything. Overthinking during the night is a serious curse. The worst overall thing about this is that it doesn't matter at what time you decide to go to bed, there is no guarantee you'll fall asleep soon, after a few hours, or at all.

I’ve had chronic insomnia since I was 8, although I was diagnosed at 10. I would take melatonin constantly and I would fall asleep at 5am, no joke. Sometimes I would go without any sleep at all. I’m currently 15 and I’ve tried everything, nothing is working. I do have anxiety and we have put into consideration that that is why I can’t sleep. I just lay there every night. I feeling like I’m wasting time but I also feel like I’m not thinking in a way. It’s like I’m just laying there with my eyes closed for hours and when I open my eyes I feel wide awake again. It’s so confusing.

SO annoying when you get insomnia for a few days or weeks, no stress or worries, you just can't fall asleep. For months or years you just fall asleep the same way every night, in minutes, normal sleep, then one night bam, tossing and turning until 3 or 4am and you don't know why. Yet everyone says it's because you're stressed or worried or overthinking. No, no I'm not. I'm waiting to fall asleep like usual and it doesn't happen. Then bam, it goes away. But ugh, the daily dull headaches and eye strain is torture.

I used to really struggle with sleep and was really obsessed with it. I read all the magazine articles, tried all the at home remedies, but eventually I just gave up. And it worked. I know this sounds really patronising and I’m not about to suggest that it’s the miracle cure, but just not obsessing over how much sleep I get if I fall asleep in 5 minutes from that exact second was stopping me from sleeping.

It's not that I have insomnia, it's because I keep thinking about random things when I sleep at night which prevents me from falling asleep. But when I try to stop thinking about it, the thought keeps popping in my head

From my own experience, one very powerful factor influencing lack of sleep is a 'perceived' lack of success in life. It may even be on a deeper, internalized subconscious level. And if there are also factors in your life that present themselves as obstacles or stumbling blocks to that success, then that added stress compounds the insomnia. Feeling trapped by situations in life are a great stressor. At least for me. And co-dependent relationships that keep you in these traps can be part of the peoblem. One thing I have definitely discovered in my life is that the biggest source of stress for me are situations and people that limit my "freedom" or independence. But I ramble on. This is just one of many factors in my personal experience.

Been having insomnia for over a year now. Every night I struggle to fall asleep which often takes 3-4 hours lying in bed. It affects the way i socialise the next day, my speech, ability to critically think, etc. During the day I would feel extremely tired but avoid taking naps cos I know it’ll affect my ability to sleep at night. Then when it comes for bed time, the endless cycle repeats. Even if I get solid 7-8 hours of sleep, I feel tired the next day and haven’t woken up feeling refreshed for over a year. Frustrating and embarrassing

Near enough my entire life. Am not a shy person am just drained... years of it is effecting my ability to socialize. I'll talk but to engage in conversation and structure it. I bearly know how to do it now unless am truly captured by the conversation. I'll remember things too but my memory for things I watched or conversations i had like 4 hours prior or 30 mins ago are incredibly fuzzy I only remember peices. May be normal may not be but I dont know at this point... if I could pay money to fix this for life I'd pay it. Because its incredibly frustrating.

What's missing here is a mention of the many common physical problems that contribute to disturbed sleep : digestive problems, allergies, asthma etc. Some people have problems with histamine intolerance causing insomnia, for example, and cbt and sleep hygiene will not solve this, though they may help the psychological dimension that inevitably arises after any period of protracted insomnia.

It's so hard to not fall asleep the whole night and end up not getting any sleep to function for the whole day especially when you have something important and need to be able to function fully like going to work, meeting, exam, occasions, etc. It's just so hard, when you really want go sleep but whatever you do, you just can't. It affects everything in your life, your everyday life, appearance, health and all. It does feel comforting knowing that I'm not alone in experiencing this. Hope we get cure to this and end this suffering 😔

Brilliant report Leah. I've had the exact same issue for over a decade since uni years. Tried everything doctors told me, nothing helped much and had given up hope, relying on sleeping tablets most nights to function. Regularly work all day in stressful architecture career with only a couple of hours sleep and have to skip social events etc. I'd normalised feeling like a Tyler Durden zombie half the week, but you've inspired me to follow up with CBT treatment. Thanks!

I've had insomnia for 4/5 YEARS so I started buying 25 mg Phenegran tablets from Lloyd's chemist and they really help! I'm also on 1mg of clonazepam for tonic clonic seizures and they have a relaxing side effect to help you drift off. When I run out of Phenegran tablets the clonazepam isn't strong enough to relax me so I can sleep. Last week I found out the reason as to why I keep getting anxious at night and why I have been getting insomnia. Ive been diagnosed with a brain tumor which needs operating to extend my 7/11 life prognosis. Shockingly the doctors STILL refuse to increase my clonazepam or offer an extra low dose 💊 sleeper to calm me at night as they look at my clonazepam usage as a possible addiction because for years I never went in and explained how I felt and why I sometimes needed extra. Moral of the story is, never ignore your symptoms go straight to your doctor appointment and explain everything before they pass judgment on you. All the best, Jay

I had a sleep study done several years ago. I got 0% of Stage 3 NREM sleep, arguably the most important and that aspect deemed "restorative." This was no aberration but rather the norm. It has caused a host of medical problems including but not limited to high blood pressure and weight gain. I try and deal with it with a degree of equanimity but it is difficult, particularly the realization that it is undoubtedly taking years off of my life. Radical Acceptance supposedly proffers great benefit so I try and tackle it from that angle. For all others out there suffering as well my thoughts and prayers are with you. It is a challenge perhaps like no other. Peace to my brothers and sisters out there contending with a similar fate.

Sleep restriction definitely does work. I have had insomnia for about three years since my son was born. I still have the odd night (last night) where I don't sleep at all. The nights I get it right I sleep like a baby and I have given up melatonin and Phenergan. Do not try to catch up on sleep or go to bed early. Go to bed LATER. The same time every night and get up at the same time every single day no matter how well you slept. Condense the amount of time you are in bed so that by the time you get to bed you are so tired you fall asleep quickly. Eventually, you adjust the times so you are getting a full 7-8 hours. Do not nap no matter how tired you are. You need to build up "sleep pressure" Do this for a couple of week and things will fall into place. There are some great apps for sleep restriction therapy.

Nice and informative video. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. For better sleep reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Keep life simple by avoiding negative social media, stop comparing your life with others and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind]. To relax and for better sleep sit on a chair or lie down especially before sleep, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath anywhere-anytime. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

My first night of getting rest was today. The world is majorly different. I know it sounds dramatic but I haven't felt like this since I was a kid.

I was almost able to sleep when i suddenly had an idea to search a k-bl where the main character has insomnia, and then found out that love for love's sake ep6 has already out, accidentaly watched it but it's almost midnight so i didn't watch the entire ep. Thanks to the fanservice, i am now the insomniac 🙂

At this point its 4 in the morning and I'm honestly just contemplating staying up and just waking up. Like I'm so frustrated and sick of tossing and turning all night I want to punch a literal wall.

I feel that sleep disorders in general and not just insomnia, are largely mental and energetic issues. CBTI looks promising, but it seems to me that is just one way to go about it. If you can find ways to lower your general energy levels before sleep, to make sure your mind isn't racing and thinking too much obsessively, you are on the way to better sleep overall. That is unfortunately much harder than it sounds and modern life makes it excessively difficult with its myriad distractions. I've had stressful and hectic periods in my life where I could hardly get any sleep at all, but eventually it passed. Yet, I never seem to be fully rested and suffer from constant fatigue. On weekdays, I need plenty of caffeine and sugary snacks to keep going, on weekends, I need to take daytime naps to be able to function as a normal member of society. I have a feeling that modern life requires too much of us, in terms of attention paid and time spent. If we could go back to a more natural, less stressful way of life, a lot fewer people would suffer from sleep disorders or constant fatigue. Any time I am out in nature for the day, spending time in the fresh air and doing physical exercise, I feel like I sleep like a log afterwards. During my normal day-to-day city/office job life, I often suffer from poor sleep and never seem to get enough rest. I usually wake up several times during the night and then struggle to go back to sleep again. This is all a curse of modern life, unfortunately.

You may have hit the nail on the head there. Going back one or two generations, people used to live a much more active life, they had to. There were a lot less obese people in those times too. And now, instead of living an active life, we live a sedentary life, going for runs or to the gym to get fit or help shed weight, whereas in the past, just living was like working out. Life is evolving quicker than our bodies can cope with and the advent of robotics and AI is not going to help, but hinder in this regard. My day job is desk bound. Last month I helped a friend put new picket fence in the garden, it took several days and it was hard graft - I slept well though.

I dont agree, I dont obsess about it nor do I have a chaotic hectic life, nor a racing mind, I just dont sleep. Occasionally I do and even during times of severe mental stress, have had it for over 50 years so that time frame must cover all possible mental and physical situations. Much easier to deal with now I am not working (semi retired) because I can catch up during the day if I need to but was torture during my working and school life.

I do have to say the time I slept the best was when I was in the army. But I had to be up at 5 am everyday and I worked out like crazy. I'll give a go again but nobody wants to have to workout a bunch to earn there place to sleep at night.

It’s what I experienced. I am energetic that’s why I can’t sleep. I realised by cutting out sugar and simple carbs I can sleep very well. By cut out I meant Low carbs for example 50-80 grams or 1.5 bowls - 2 bowls of white rice or brown rice max or 1 loaf of bread max. Or 2 bowls of noodles. Then from there cut it to 1 serving jack up fats and fruits and protein you will sleep well. Try it. It works after following it strictly for 5 days after. Cutting out sugar is key. I think it causes a huge issue

It's annoying because my partner sleeps well and she doesn't understand me at all. I just lie awake for hours when she's already sleeping for 2 or 3 hours. Last few night I didn't sleep with her and went back to the couch just to lay down and try to watch some TV. I will show her this video and hope she understands my issues.
