I know this is an upload that I have already done but I wanted to change it to one that the sound has been corrected as the original was out of sync half way through the video.
This is one of my favourite Wexford stories, it's quite different, I think, from many of the others.
Hopefully, if ITV see how popular these are on KZfaq they might release the complete collection on DVD or Blu-ray.

These are psychological mysteries that are a pleasure to find! It is strange to top off these twists in behavior with our current emotional twists and very heavy going daily coping with the pandemic and political craziness. Ruth Rendell is a favorite author and she knew a thing or two about the human flirtation with evil. Stay safe all!

Osnat Shaibe Yes, I strongly agree with your articulate comments. When I watch these shows I’m completely drawn into the story. I’m fond of some of the American cop dramas from the 70’s such as Rockford files & Hunter, But I do get very annoyed with the over use of “umm” & “ah”, after every other word, when they can’t remember a few simple lines. Sometimes I’ve got no choice but turn it off for a while because of this gripe of mine. When I watch the British shows I see the proof of quality is so obvious. I guess it’s cheaper to produce a show which isn’t constantly filming wild fast car chases & explosions every week so they put more attention into the actors & their lines and the quality is clear. I also enjoy Midsommer Murder.👍👍👍👍😊😊😎Thank you.

Fascinating story, indeed. The actors so top in their respective roles. Thank you for posting. Blessed be that people own trauma and its effects now, and have been learning in many ways how to truly heal that in our psyches and bodies. I found myself thinking that 15 years later, that so young child would have been of course given a true therapist and ways to heal up, so that the tragic life's walk that was shown here would not be imposed also on her as well. A tale of why to handle one's life and one's childrren's lives straight on, and why. These are stories as " entertainment" but so well done on the scale of acting, that they resonate many good and deep questions, as all theatre is meant to do...as in what is a marriage truly, what is it to be in the Church (that one always complicated, of course, as it's meant to be in those religions), and much more. Thanks again.

The difference between British and American TV is character development. While Wexford is the main character, he doesn't dominate like a Columbo, Kojak or Magnum PI did. In this Show, no character is too insignificant to not be developed. Also the script is excellent. The psychology is right on. And of course, the settings are amazing.

What an absolutely fascinating story with the 'did he or didn't he do it' tension kept up throughout, to the discomfort of all. Then right at the end, a stunning plot twist resolves all the tensions caused by the doubt over Painter's guilt. Great cast of actors in this episode and Peter Egan brought his usual kindly, smooth charm to his role.

I briefly worked for a law firm that tried to mitigate death penalty cases to life sentences. The death penalty is a great solution in theory, but in practice, the evidence, the lawyering, the politics of a prosecutor needing convictions, the skill of defendant's counsel, the judge's management of the trial, and the biases of the jurors is just not fail-proof to take someone's life. I was foreman of a jury in a manslaughter case, and 4 of the 12 jurors wanted the death penalty, which wasn't even a consideration. Good luck finding a jury of your "peers."

Since I was born and live on the Isle of Wight, it was nice to see their little trip starting off with the drive along the sea front at Ventnor (where I spent a lot of my misspent youth), also along the Military Road (built to service the troops stationed there on the gun batteries at Freshwater Bay and the Needles, as the original road fell away with cliff falls), to overlook Freshwater Bay, and ending up besides St Catherine's Lighthouse , at Niton, where I went to my first school in the 1950's. Which made the film more interesting for me, as I have visited these places so many times over the years. Happy days.

So those brief shots really were made on the Isle of Wight! Thank you for filling in the details as a native. The island looks very pretty, only a trifle bare (no woods). I would like to know more about it, as I have never visited there as far as I know.
@Trillock-hy1cf
@Trillock-hy1cf 3 жыл бұрын
@@mfjdv2020 There are some woods/forests on the Island, some down near the old radar station (reverted back to a farm now I think) on the coast at St Lawrence, where there used to be Nissan huts to home people bombed out from places like Portsmouth. Southampton, London etc., I think, and all demolished now and reverted back to being woods again. Also just outside of the main town of Newport, there are some forests behind the prisons, 'Camp Hill Cat. C Prison' (now obsolete and empty, but spent a year there as an auxiliary Prison Officer, keeping an eye on contractors there to stop prisoners nicking stuff), HMP Albany and of course Parkhurst prisons, for a nice day out walking in summer time. There are other woods scattered about the Island, as the main population is around the Eastern end of the Island, whereas West Wight is mainly farming, open ground, and then around the coast with Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth to explore. Great coastal walks from Niton onwards to the Needles, but not so good when it is very wet and windy though up on the high cliffs towards Freshwater and the Needles.....:) From Southampton it is about a 50 minutes ride on a Ferry across to Cowes, and about 20 minutes or some from Portsmouth to Ryde either by Car Ferry to the Pier, or Hover craft from Southsea to Ryde beach. You might need to win the Lottery to pay for the fairs though, although I believe it is a bit difficult these days with this virus lurking about. Anyway, there are quite a few drone videos on YT covering parts of the Island to give you and idea....:)

Great episode, with many twists and red herrings. I was a bit shocked, though, at the proposal of the storyline. Who cares what the father had done when the girl was little? Is that enough to break off an engagement? She says to Charles that it would gnaw at their relationship sooner or later. Really? And then they're all hopping with happiness when, I don't want to do a spoiler, when the mother reveals her truth. All obstacles overcome. This was 1991 but it did have a medieval ring to it. Anyway, thanks for all your uploads; I'm having a great time watching these.
