Why could a rag quilt seam rip when washed? There are several factors to consider when rag quilt seams break. First check your thread. If you can easily break it with your hands, it may be an old spool and no longer strong enough to hold up in a seam. Second, check the seams to ensure all fabric layers were fully caught in the stitching. Sometimes the back fabric may slip reducing the intended 1/2-inch seam allowance. Third, did any of the clipped seams get cut while clipping them before washing? Or even if the cut is too close, that could weaken the seam. Lastly, block size could be a factor. For example, this quilt uses 10-inch squares but it's a lightweight cotton and flannel. Heavier fabrics, such as denim would create a lot of weight on the seams. Denim rectangles work better in a rag quilt, so the weight is more evenly distributed. As a final thought, consider your thread weight. Try using a 30wt thread as it's heavier and therefore stronger.

I'm very impressed with you for starting this in your 70s. It is so inspiring and encouraging to me to hear someone of our age group start learning a new skill. Sewing is such a needed skill and making a quilt is a perfect way to learn and make something useful and beautiful for your home. You should really be proud of yourself. It's very sad to me that our generation did not pass on all of these skills and we need to go to KZfaq to learn but thank goodness there are seasoned sewers who are willing to share their knowledge with us. I hope you keep learning and sewing.

I have a suggestion that I always do & that is to press all your fabrics first, that way your squares are square.

I am so so happy that you patiently took the time to show this tutorial. I'm what I call an advanced beginner (I'm 66 and in my first year of quilting and really, basically sewing)and I love rag quilts! I'm so happy to that you showed those clippers. My rag lap quilt I made for my uncle was very tedious. I was a beginner then but I tackled it. In between my making stuff for family, I do some what I call cuddle quilts that I'll be donating to Children's Hospital (and I do some pet pillows for shelters that will take them). I am so going to try this. I think cuddle quilts done in a rag quilt will go over well, and I do happen to have some extra 'flannelette' to use on the inside. Very very easy to follow, thank you very much again.!!

Congrats on all you've learned and how you're putting it to such great use, Ellen! Rag quilting is very forgiving and I generally make at least a few every year. Those clippers definitely come in handy. You'll absolutely appreciate how much easier they are to use than regular scissors for clipping rag quilts. One thing I do is clip as I go. When I have a couple rows together I'll do the clipping as I find it easier to manage in smaller sections. Plus the clipping is done over time rather than all at once! Thanks so much for watching! Using a walking foot helps tremendously when sewing so many thicknesses. I’ve sewn 3 together, but have never seen anyone using 4. Wow, that would be hard however I noticed that you’re sewing like brick pattern, that the seams don’t meet on each row. Smart to do that given you have 4 layers. Nice rag quilt.

I often count the squares on a cutting board when watching a video - I could see what was about to happen - no point me shouting when you are so far away 😆but all's well that ends well. I knew you could use those 'mistakes' in your 1/2 blocks, and what a beautiful finish. Your Granddaughter will be so happy snuggling under that quilt 🥰

Wool balls in the dryer help a lot! I finished my first full sized rag quilt (turned out to be queen sized rather than full) and we forgot to shake it out outside--but we did use lint rollers and that definitely helped a great deal and made me feel better about gifting a more finished looking quilt. I've not mixed quilting cotton with flannel, I was concerned about the different shrinkage rates -I'd love to see up close what that looks like.

You absolutely can do it! It's a great way to begin quilting b/c it's so forgiving. Just focus on keeping your seams as straight as you can and you're good to go. Remember that a rag quilt is sewn with a 1/2" seam allowance whereas other quilts are sewn with a 1/4" seam. I am seeing this video as part of your Teachable course on Rag Quilts with Ruffled Borders. Such a great class! So much information and great tips! I have really enjoyed it. A thing to consider: Quilter's cotton can be rather thin and see-through. That being the case, I might have moved the purple fabric down a layer. Then the pink flannel would have made a uniform color backing to the white multicolor floral and the purple would still have shown nicely in the frayed block edges. Just a thought. A beautiful quilt in lovely colors. Makes me want to dig into my stash and get started. Thank you!

Loved your video. Picked up some great tips. I am working on a queen size rag quilt, designing with a heart in center on front and a shell on the back side. I also am offsetting the rows like you did. I have designed on graph paper. I have designed putting half block on each side every other row. I noticed you put 1 1/2 block on each row. I have not begun to sew the blocks yet. Still cutting blocks with my accuquilt. This will allow me not having to cut by hand all of the fringe. I loved how you inserted the extra layer to bring out the color in the fringe. I also did not know you could mix cotton fabric with the flannel. Also, you said the purple fabrics were batik, I did not think the batik would ravel like flannel and cotton fabric. Thank you so much for your videos.

You really got all the details on this quilt, Sally! It sounds like you're off to a great start and will have a finished quilt before you know it. Precutting the fringe is definitely a plus as that take a bit of time. Most all cottons will ravel to some degree, but flannel and denim are the best. The 1 1/2 blocks is where I ran out of one of the fabrics! LOL I'm all about using what I have. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Glad you enjoyed watching, Jeannie! When making a rag quilt, you need to cut the batting smaller than the square so it's encased within the fabric square. Otherwise your ragged edges will have beards since the batting won't fray or ravel. The best fabrics to choose are 100% cottons and flannel as they will give you the best frayed edges. If using batting, cut your squares 1" smaller and keep it centered within the top and bottom fabrics. Before assembling your quilt, you'll need to stitch the block with an 'X' from corner to corner which secures the batting in place. They you're ready to assemble you're blocks with a 1/2" seam. It's a great way to use up all your extra batting pieces! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Many rag quilts are sewn with an x before putting together. I like this. How much material was used.

You'll need about 5 yards of fabric per layer, Melanie. Since I used two colors on both the top and bottom, that's about 2.5 yards of each color. You can also buy 10" precut layer cakes which would save time cutting but most likely cost more. Thanks so much for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Thanks, Susan! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. No prewashing on rag quilt fabrics as it's better for them to shrink up a bit after they're sewn. That way, after they're washed you get a nice 'quilty' look. When I rag quilt I always use a walking foot and a size 16 needle. This has been a fun quilt to make! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Hi! I would like to use this method for a quilt made from my grandbabie's outgrown onsies. I'm thinking of using a stretch fusible interfacing for stability. I The edges will roll instead of fray, which is fine. Do you think I should still run a line of stay stitching for the edges? Also any ideas on the seam allowance width? Great idea, Hazel! Even though onesies won't fray, the stretchy fibers may pull along the seam edges. So I would suggest a 1/2-inch seam to keep everything together nicely. The stretch fusible interfacing is a great idea! I've never used it, but have though to use for a t-shirt quilt. I would absolutely run a stay stitch line around the quilt edges to keep seam ends from loosening. This quilt will be washed many times and the stay stitching will keep the edges secure. This will be such a wonderful quilt project - have fun! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Do you wash your flannel 1st. particularly since it shrinks more than cotton?

You may be surprised to know that there's no prewashing on any of these fabrics, Julie. The extra shrinkage of the flannel makes the quilt that much poofier and it looks great. Loved your tutorial on this rag quilt…the idea of staggering the seams so there isn’t that bulk where all the squares meet at the same place is pure golden advice! Unfortunately, the link to the Janome rag cutters now links to a cheap, but similar, cutter on Amazon. I won’t waste my $ on it….been there, done that. Husband tried to get the Janome brand for me, but every place says they are out of stock/ discontinued / don’t know when, or whether they will be available again. I’ll search for a similar item with an established, reputable brand. You, or anyone on here, have a suggestion?

There are some time-saving steps I take that help. Cutting my fabrics together in layers makes it much quicker to pick up my blocks to sew them. Using flannel instead of batting is a time saver too. Generally I can finish a mid-size rag quilt in a long day or weekend. Keep in mind that the clipping can take a few hours, too. That's when I turn the TV on and just clip, clip, clip! Help Just made my first rag quilt. But everything is cut. I didn't like the outside edges they don't rag enough for me. What can I do now that everything is clipped. Is their away to add a binding.

It might be a bit messy at first, but you should be able to add binding, Nancy. First trim the ragged edge to 1/4'inch. Then stitch around the outer edge to join those trimmed edges together. You might even try a zigzag stich. Then just proceed with your binding as normal. Alternatively, you can cut off all the ragged edge and just bind from there. The size difference in the quilt will be minimal with the extra trimming. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I would like to make a Rag Quilt but I want to sew a padding. And I don't know if I cut it in the same dimension than the fabric or smaller. Because when we are doing Rag with scissors we cut padding too, and it might be not very pretty. What do you think about it ?

Good question! The padding between the layers needs to be cut 1-inch smaller than the blocks. That way the padding will stay inside when you sew with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Hi I accidentally ordered quilters cotton instead of flannel for my rag quilt…I plan on using batting in the middle, my question is can I use all cotton instead of flannel?

Good question, Darlene! The entire quilt has two rows of stitching around the edge as reinforcement for the seams. All my rag quilts have held up very well without any loosening seams along the edges. They just get softer and cozier with every wash! Thanks for watching. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

So you sew twice all around the finished quilt and if you do this are you sewing on top of the first round or right next to it? In all wouldn't that end up being three times around cause each sandwich is edged? And why do you a half block? I've never quilted anything in my life you make it seem so easy with all the wealth of instructions. I can't wait to make a rag quilt. You have done a beautiful job!

Glad you found this helpful, Renee. 😊 Back stitching is important on the narrow, 1/4-inch seams we use in quilting. My machine needs a visit to the repair shop as the back stitch button isn't working. What I do instead is hold the fabric in place for a second or two to get really small, repeating stitching where I begin sewing my seams. Other precautionary steps I generally always take with or without backstitching is to over-sew my seams where possible. For example I always a sew around the entire quilt sandwich before quilting. It keeps all the layers around the edge where they need to be and also reinforces all the seams. Plus I don't trim my seam threads right up to the fabric edge. I leave about an 1/8-1/4-inch tail so the seam is less likely to unravel under too much tension. This is usually short enough that it's not visible in any way. The main reason I add borders to my rag quilts is simply to reinforce the edges. Left as is, the seams securing the blocks are susceptible to coming loose if there's too much tension from pulling or stretching the quilt. An added border secures the block seams and keeps everything together nicely. Long answer but when I sold quilts years ago it was important to me that my quilts held up for a long time. That's happened to me, too, Jessica. Thanks for your question. There are a number of factors to consider when rag quilt seams break. First check your thread. If you can easily break it with your hands it may be an old spool and no longer strong enough to hold up in a seam. Second, check the seams to ensure all fabric layers were fully caught in the stitching. Sometimes the back fabric may slip reducing the intended 1/2-inch seam allowance. Third, did any of the clipped seams get cut while clipping them before washing? Or even if the cut is too close, that could weaken the seam. Lastly, block size could be a factor. For example this quilt uses 10-inch squares but it's a light weight cotton and flannel. Heavier fabrics, such as denim would create a lot of weight on the seams. That's why I usually use denim rectangles in a rag quilt so the weight is more evenly distributed. As a final thought, consider your thread weight. I always use a 30wt thread as it's heavier and therefore stronger. I hope this give you some helpful ideas. Thanks so much for following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Absolutely, three layers is actually the conventional method. This is my granddaughter's camping quilt. She loves pink and purple. There was plenty of pink but I wanted to add some purple. Since I only had 1 layer of flannel, I added an extra layer of purple cotton for color and warmth. The extra layer of fabric bulked up the fayed edges and the purple looked great!
