It's Lucy's first time watching this Christopher Nolan war movie set at the early stages of WWII. Being a big war films fan (and Christopher Nolan fan also), I'm sure she will enjoy reacting to this one.

Fun fact! Most, if not all, of those boats they focus on during the scene they arrive… are the ACTUAL boats that were there at Dunkirk. Those little ships make a yearly trip on the anniversary in memory of the ‘Miracle at Dunkirk’.

There were approximately 330,000 soldiers rescued at Dunkirk. 220,000 British and 110,000 French troops. Most of the French troops turned around and returned to France to continue to fight the Germans. Sadly that did not turn out well. Some remained in England and formed the free-French forces.

Kudos to Lucy! 👍😊 She correctly guessed within seconds of watching the first scene on the beach that a French Army deserter was trying to disguise himself as a British soldier so that he could escape the Germans.

I really like how the movie portrays the different perception of time progression for characters in the various theaters of war that are in air, at sea or on land. It's amazing how Nolan integrated all these inconsistent time frames into one consistent movie. When it comes to fudging around with time Nolan delivered here one of his best works on par with Memento and in my opinion even better than Tenet and Interstellar (regarding the time fuckery).

To this day, all civilian ships that took part in Operation Dynamo are allowed to fly the St. George flag on a pike pole as a badge of honor, which is illegal for other civilian ships as it is the insignia of a fleet admiral.

*self-sacrifice (sorry for being a terminologynazi but I wasn't able to just let stand your amazing comment without that prefix for better clarification, because I don't believe in the accuracy of contextual languages and was willing to sacrifice my humor for that unnecessary accuracy, because I am German.)

Hi Daniel and Lucy just seen your reaction and glad you both enjoyed the film, It is a good film but do wish Nolan had made it more grimy and shown how the town really looked, and that he had also shown some of the rearguard fighting as well as it was also an important part of keeping the troops safe on the beach and buying them time to evacuate, Also I have a personally interest in this time period as my grandfather was a infantryman in the 4th Oxon and Buck and was part of the rearguard defense and was captured at the battle of Cassel on the 29th of May and spent the rest of the war as a POW in Poland.

Hey there! I agree, one of the stories could have been about the defenders holding the lines for example. I also think the movie coulda have been more violent and dirty. Still, what amazing air fighting sequences! Sound, soundtrack, editing and cinematography were all great! And ultimately, the courage of an entire nation is on full display in this one I would say. We are not british, but I would say that if we were that was a moment we would had been proud of our people 👌

@@ptthatswhatshesaid I agree with you there was so much more Nolan could've done in the film, but what he did do was still worth watching, If you want to check out some more WW2 films The Bridge on the River Kwai, released 1957 which stars Sir Alec Guinness is a good film set in a Japanese POW camp. Dunkirk released 1958 stars John Mills and is a very good film and has a much more real feel to it, And Where Eagles Dare, released 1968 which stars Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, Iron Maiden the greatest heavy metal band in the world wrote a song based on the film. also will there be a Bladerunner reaction anytime soon.

Good movie, although sadly Nolan didnt pay attention to the either major details or small details, so its VERY unrealisticThe beach was waaaay more hectic than that. Was packed with soldiers. This movie makes it feel like theres barely anyone there. The town was half destroyed. Just about every window-pane in every street had been smashed by the time of the evacuation and the streets were full of bombed and burned-out houses. You dont see any of that. Its like a few soldiers in a pristine town. Also, they didnt remove any of the modern things like modern lamposts and modern windows so its really jarring in that regard too. Nolan also barely showed any of the reargaurd action, we were fighting for our lives to allow the soldiers to escape. We didnt just run. Thousands of British and French soldiers fought to hold the germans off to allow the others to escape. Many losing their lives.

I love this movie but I have to agree that it needed to be a bit more "ugly" and chaotic. My favourite exemple of a scene showing the situation at Dunkirk is a fantastic long one take shot in Atonement (2008).
