I don't own a router but this cool attachment takes it's place!!
Further INFO:
In this video I will show you how to cut your bored interior slab door so that it can accept hinge plates without a hammer and chisel and without a router. In fact, you probably have half the main tool you need already! Cutting each hinge mortise took me about 3 or 4 minutes.
NOTE: You could use clamps and some scrap lumbar (1x2 for example) to clamp on the door and use as a makeshift JIG if you were worried about free handing the dremel. But if you go slow and pay attention it is not difficult. Practicing on any piece of scrap wood could be helpful.
A couple of notes:
1. Setting the depth of the cutting tool: It isn't clear in the video but you will gauge your depth using the old door and pressing the cutting bit against the cut out section of the door where the old hinge rested. If you are not using an old door just set the depth using conventional hinge installation measurements.
2. Once you have your door ready to accept the hinge plates, drill pilot holes before you screw the hinges in place.
3. One trick I have learned when mounting the door is to leave the hinges just a tiny bit loose. I mean just a fraction. This will allow the hinges on the door to move just a tiny bit when lining the door hinges up with the mating hinge on the door facing. Once you have the hinge pins in place, torque down the screws on the door's hinges.
4. I used Dremel's 115 Carving Bit. This will run you another $4 or $5.
5. The plunge router kit for the dremel can be used for any light duty style router work you may need to do from making a bookshelf to making your own moulding.
I hope you have found the video helpful!
And for all the old schoolers out there who swear by the hammer and chisel, good on you!

Good video. A couple of suggestions. Clamp the old door to the new door and put both doors upright so that the routed surfaces are pointing up. This does two things for you. The Dremel will be much more stable with 2 doors clamped together ( width of 3 inches verses 1.5 inches with just a single door). Also , you will be using the weight of the Dremel to keep the clear faceplate on the door edges. I didn't know Dremel had a plunge attachment for routing. I'm in the process of replacing 16 doors in my house and I will get the plunge attachment. Thanks for the info.

A lot of hate out there. I watched it to decide between this or a trim router, or a chisel. I don't understand comments like this: I can use a chisel in 23 seconds with my right hand behind my back and it will look like it came off a CNC machine. Great, so why are you watching this if your mind is already made up. I'm ok with a router, so I'll stick with it, but I can see why someone would use the Dremel: 1. You own a Dremel but not a trim router. 2. Your routing skills and your chisel skills aren't the best, so using a power tool that doesn't spin at 26,000 rpm is a safer bet. To those 'pros' out there saying go learn how to use a chisel, I say, hey maybe I don't need specialized carpentry skills (if it was that easy, they wouldn't be selling pre-hung doors). I mean, I can use calculus to derive the shear moment of a structural element in a high rise building, but I don't make fun of mr. chisel for not being able to do that, I'm just happy for him that he has good chiseling skills.

Good idea! I am changing out a door at the end of a bathroom remodel in my home. I did not want to trust myself with a chisel, and I did not want to buy a router that I will likely never use again. This thing will attach to my dremel and 6 years after the video was made, now sells for 25 bones on Amazon. Perfect solution. Thanks!

Use a combination square to transfer your marks...Also put your dorr on its side and secure it! Much easier working from the top!I've used a dremel with the adj. drywall cutout attatchment! Works great! I have a router so I sometimes use a jig! Transfer your marks set your depth and your good! I also drill my holes with makita self centering combination drill and screw bits!

I love the router plunge attachment for Dremel. Unfortunately, I don’t own one of those either. I think you could have avoided any imperfections had you braced the door on its sideways (hinge side up) instead of flat, giving you more control from a downward pressure than cutting it from an unstable side pressure position.

I hear you on the chisel hate...I've shanked and chipped edges using chisels. A router makes the job much quicker and easier. I do like that the dremel attachment is see through. It's a tough call though because Harbor Freight sells 2.4 amp routers for $30 which will rout out wood much quicker than a Dremel with a better choice of bits to use. Be careful with Dremel speed selection as higher speeds can burn the wood. Most door slabs need to be shaved with a saw or planed to fit into a pre-existing door frame. Planers are preferred over circular saws if your cut is small (1/4" for example). Use original door as a template and don't discard the old one until your new one is good to go.

The Dremel tool is much lighter and easier to handle for those projects. There are available hinge templates for routers that ensure no messy router (break aways😂) but to your point… the dremel is much more of a multi tool. Cool vid!

The attachment for plunge router is cool. The thing about lining up doors is you assume that the previous doors were spot on. Google “door bucks”. Buck is another word for sawhorse. Build at least two I built three so I keep the best two. They hold the door on edge firmly and you can saddle the door and use body weight to hold it firm. You can also make a guide plate in addition that clamps on so you don’t go beyond the edges.

Screw the hinge on at the correct location with 2 screws from the hinge. Using a sharp exacto or utility knife use the edge of the hinge as a guide to cut along the edge of the hinge the depth of the hinge blade. Remove the hinge and clean out with your Dremel router. Perhaps use a square to mark down the face of the hinge rather than a level (much more accurate and stable). The router/dremel would be easier to control and use if you turned the door on edge also. You can use the blade of the hinge to set the exact depth of cut by placing the base of the router on top of the hinge and then plunging it to the surface of the door and adjust your step stop. (With the tool off of course)

I prefer pre hung doors. I have nothing but trouble with doors in general. You do all that prep and get the door in the hole and it’s wonky. You adjust the hinges so your reveal is right then the latch is off lol. You adjust the latch then the homeowners complain it squeaks. You fix the squeak then the say it won’t stay open. I should have just bought a pre hung door after 3 trips and 6 hours labor. Oh yeah can you paint it? More to point out

Interesting idea. What i do sometimes if I don't have a jig, is use a router (or you could use your dremel idea) for the bulk of the cut-out, but do the edges with a sharp utility knife and chisel. Less chance of an oopsie and it will end up cleaner than the result in the video. Also I wouldn't use a level to transfer the marks- the door would have to be sitting perfectly level on the sawhorses for a plumb line to work.

I just did the first of five matching interior doors today the “old fashioned way” with a set of chisels. I kinda enjoyed the old school aspect of it but it DID take forever and looks a bit rough. I started with the linen closet door as I figured it gets the least amount of use and screw-ups would be less noticeable. The Dremel router looks easier but I’m already in the cost of the chisels, I think I’ll continue that way but I AM using a sanding attachment on my rotary tool to clean things up a bit. Out of curiosity, will that Dremel router fit multiple models/other brands of rotary tool, or is it specifically made for one particular model? On a side note to anyone else reading this who may be doing the job for the first time: cheaper hollow-core interior doors like the Jeld-Wen series I purchased will cut a bit rough as the outer panels are made of some kind of press board. It doesn’t chisel like real wood.

This guy literally damaged his door to help you people watching this video and you guys leave this guy a negative review? How are people like this? What is wrong with people now a days? Is it Covid and people are just losing their minds? I’ve left a positive review for that reason alone, plus icing on the cake the video isn’t a bad video. Guys let’s give each other a break during these difficult times. Let’s not make it more difficult and harder for all of us to live on this planet together. Let’s love each other and be there for each other. How much more hatred do we need. Remember the negative reviews only hurt the person leaving the negative review. It only makes you feel good. By the end of the day, you’ll need to have a conscience mind so you can sleep at night. Remember next time when you can’t sleep, go through your day and see what you did. Helping people and giving and treating people great is the best way to sleep like a baby. Good luck to those that are negative and I’ll be praying for you all. And also, lastly, great video! and sorry your door got damaged. Bless you and your family and continue doing great work!

Disagreeing or criticizing someone's method is not negativity or hate, it's called constructive criticism. If a person feels another person's work is subpar or done incorrectly it should not be praised simply because an effort was made or "feelings".
