Make sure your Blink cameras run all season long by installing a solar panel. These are easy to fit on the nest box and you don't have to worry about your batteries draining.
Solar panel install is so easy, it probably doesn't need the video, but sometimes, this just helps for motivation and encouragement when you see how easy it is. It takes about 5 minutes mount the solar panel and probably another 5 minutes to connect withy our Blink camera and fit it into the nest box.
Supplies________________________
1. Blink camera mounted to your nest box. See video links below. You can get the Blink Outdoor cameras on Amazon* for about $100. When they're on sale, they run about $70. amzn.to/453ftFA
2. Blink compatible solar panel. I got mine off Amazon*. Here's the one in this video: amzn.to/3XkDCpB
3. Awl
4. Screw driver - The one in this video lets you swap out the heads. It has been super convenient for other projects: amzn.to/35bJ5pK
5. Drill and screw gun (optional). These make it quicker, but you can do it without them. The awl and screw driver area really all you need.
Wondering about the nest box in the thumbnail?____________________
I call this one the Frankenstein box. The block on tope was a result of me experimenting with the skylight concept to prevent house sparrows. It didn't work. So I put a block on top to cover the light from getting in. The upside is that it allows a lot more clearance when I have a wren guard on the box.
We're hoping to get chickadees in this nest box Think happy thoughts.

Glad this helped. The link was in the supply section of the description, but I have it for you here too: amzn.to/3JW4br2 That link is for the Wasserstein brand. But there are others that are Blink compatible that you can browse: amzn.to/3pn0G4Z

Do you need Wi-Fi to have blink to record videos? Or will it run on its own?
@nesthollow5159

Sorry for the late response. As far as I understand, you need wifi for it to transmit to the app or cloud storage. I don't know how much actual storage is on the camera itself. Wyze cameras have a micro SD that it can record on. But they are so bulky and would require box modification or a custom built box to fit it.

How is the solar panel working after having it installed for 2 months now? I currently have 3 nest boxes with Blink cameras running on batteries, and I am hoping the solar panel would be a better option. I have 5 day old chickadee babies in my first nest box, 3 chickadee eggs so far in my second nest box ( same chickadee male with two separate females) and my bluebird couple from last season starting to build a nest in my 3rd nest box. Thanks!

I have another box with a solar panel and have had it for a year. It's been working perfectly. I think one thing you have to do is take out the battery of the Blink when you're switching to solar because otherwise Blink may rely on the battery and not the solar panel - it won't shift over to the panel for energy while the battery is in. However, you'll want to give your solar panel some sun before doing that switch. The solar panels have their own battery that is charged by solar, but it seems like for the Wasserstein brand solar panel, that internal battery is not precharged. I hope that makes sense. If not, don't hesitate to ask :)

Also congratulations on the chickadee, and wow to that male! Is he equally attentive to both? It is so much fun with the bluebirds and chickadees, and also a lot of stress with all the things that could happen along the way. It is impressive anything survives nature.

@@nesthollow5159 Thanks for your quick response. I am even more excited about getting a solar panel now. I’ve been taking very quick clips of my chickadees and Ms. Bluie building her nest, as I’m afraid I may drain my batteries too fast if I use the Blink camera too much. My male chickadee brought the 1st female to our backyard about a month ago, and he’s been busy feeding her and giving her lots of attention as she built the nest. The babies hatched around a week ago, and both mom and dad have been in and out of the nest box feeding the chicks. What a surprise when I woke up a couple of days ago to a chickadee going in and out of my 2nd nest box with moss. I first assumed it was the first female starting a new nest, but heard it was rare for chickadees to do two broods, plus why would she be starting a new nest so soon? As I continued to look in my yard I spotted 3 chickadees, and I soon noticed 2 of the 3 chickadees were fighting throughout the day - air fighting and ground fighting. The male did not intervene, but he continued to go in and out of both nest boxes doing his daily checks. Yesterday, I saw female #2 beg the male for food, but he ignored her and took the food that was in his beak to the chicks instead. 😊 He must be giving female #2 attention at some point, because I noticed she has new eggs daily. The bluebirds began building in my 3rd box a few days ago, but today I noticed that Ms. Bluie has started chasing the chickadees and attempting to stop them from entering their box. I have hole reducers on both chickadee boxes, but that hasn’t stopped Ms. Bluie from trying to enter their box or block them from going into their box. My second issue is house sparrows. I had a male house sparrow enter the bluebird box today, but the male bluebird chased him off. The same male sparrow tried getting in one of the chickadee boxes, but was unsuccessful because of the hole reducer. I do not have a sparrow spooker up on the bluebird box because there aren’t any eggs laid yet. I have one feeder out that is filled with live mealworms, wax worms, and seed. My chickadees have been feeding the worms to their chicks, and the bluebirds have been using the feeder to feed their first brood, as well. I also have mockingbirds, titmice, song sparrows, Carolina wrens, robins, nuthatches, blue jays, woodpeckers, and lots of other birds taking worms/seed from my feeder. I think maybe I should remove my feeder, because although it is attracting some beautiful birds, it is also attracting house sparrows. I don’t know if there’s a way to still feed my nesting birds without attracting the sparrows. Have you had any success with sparrow spookers? Do you have any other suggestions? This is indeed turning out to be more stressful than I’ve hoped. 😊

@Ree what a lively place. The sparrow is a concern. I've had luck when I remove all seed and suet from the yard. You may even want to hold back on meal worms for a few days, or only put a bit out in the early morning and late afternoon. If you have a covered meal worm feeder or a Gilbertson meal worms feeder, that can help a lot. We carry one covered one that is really nice. It's not 100% - nothing ever is. But it has been easy to clean and the birds have no trouble. And of course, we couldn't resist putting a Blink camera in it to see who came in and out. nesthollow.com/product/recycled-mealworm-feeder/ But ultimately, my first bit of advice would be to remove seed. Second, I just put a video out about mounting a wood pasta rack to a nest box and using that for a spooker. While you don't have eggs in it yet, you could mount the rack. It's very easy to do. And test them one streamer at a time. If they go in after putting one up, add another. If they keep going in, you might be ok to follow through all the way. The nice thing with the pasta rack is that you can remove hanging rods, and you can adjust how much they hang over the box. So when testing, only start with one rod, and I would do a side one. And just see how they react. I would do this on a day where you could spend time observing, because you'll want to add more streamers bit by bit within the day so that a house sparrow won't want to perch on a vacant side of the rod. If your birds aren't going to the box, remove the streamer (and the rods). Actual, you could unscrew the rack from the base so the whole thing is down until they're ready. It's super handy and they don't cost much on Amazon. I'll get the video link in a reply.

This comment is on the blow dispatch method video. I agree with doing our part to control the invasive house sparrow population but I honestly think that is barbaric. The best way is to simply grasp the bird in your palm and give it a good squeeze. In my opinion the squeeze method is hands down the fastest and most humane method of dispatching invasive non native house sparrows. When I first began actively trapping and dispatching them last year, I saw this video and I thought to myself. Why? So violent. Just grab them and squeeze for 10 seconds and flush. I think it’s virtually painless for the bird as well, as they instantly lose consciousness. Thanks for the videos, I really enjoy them.

Agreed. Thoracic compression is a good option.. Though 10 seconds is somewhat long. Thoracic compression must be done efficiently and effectively or else it takes even longer and becomes inhumane - so for beginners, getting it right matters. The length of time for a euthanasia method is one of the reasons some people are against the CO2 or lighter fluid fumes method (takes about 15-20 seconds). Though we've read that the CO2 method is also considered humane. Cervical dislocation is one of the most human methods. However, many who start out doing this are not fond of getting so close to the birds. The sound from it is also not for the faint of heart. The blow option is the next best one in that case since it takes a second. It's just so fast and easy for beginners to stomach. After enough time doing this, many do graduate into the Cervical dislocation method. We have been wanting to do a video on cervical dislocation as well.

@@nesthollow5159 I agree with everything but the time. In my experience, any shorter than 10 second and I’ve had them revive unexpectedly. In fact just one time I had one revive, even after the 10 seconds; it somehow just flew away out of the bag! Minimum of 10 seconds gives the heart time to stop completely. After that, there’s really nothing for them to experience at all. From what I can tell, the moment they’re constricted, they’re unconscious instantly… but a steady and firm grip is absolutely crucial. It’s sure not for the faint of heart, which I am, but honestly I just don’t look, I just reach in and do it so I don’t hear it or have a visual memory of it. I just keep in mind I’m doing my duty as a bird enthusiast to contribute to the native bird population, which has become nearly non-existent these days. I have tried the cervical method but I can’t stand the feeling of it. And the way they flap violently. I just don’t like it.

@@misterkota1252 oh yikes on the revival. That must have been hard. No debate in how long it should take - more that the method itself I not as instant as others. But you make a good point about them being unconscious instantly. That is definitely helpful to know.
