I guess the answer is it all depends !!!! , for me it is a matter of " one server to rules them all" . My proxmox server is running a emby server , torrent server , pi-hole , a nas , windows 10 and 11 test machines , home assistant , openwrt , pfsense , etc . The advantage is I can easy back them up and move them to a different machine without any problems . Not saying there isn't any cons too like put all your eggs in one basket , but I can running ALL the above at the same time on under 20 watts from the plug idle . The only big problem so far is with proxmox / home assistant is using the internal sound card for text to speech , I will find a way.

I personally started again, but if you take a snapshot from the pi, you can upload that when you first log in to the new HA on proxmox

There are pros and cons to every method - the pi is perfectly reliable if you use an SSD, but a nightmare if you use an SD card. I was upgrading from a 3b+ so making use of the windows machine I had lying around was great (and free); unlike upgrading to a 4gb pi4 and then getting an ssd

( ryzen 5700g , 64 gb ram , 4tb + 1tb ssd. ) The Pros are you have a real pc with lot of ram and lots of hard drive controllers , the cons are the cost of building a low energy rocket.

@@terryd3056 Yes about 18 - 19 watts with everything on idle , But with power boost off in bios so limiting down to 4.8ghz all core , bad eh ? . BUT since then my power as gone up a little by installing Frigate to home assistant , which needs to constantly decode a video / audio stream from cameras convert the alaw audio stream into aac and encoded it back again , and if the stream see any movement, use object detection . AND because I can't get to hardware en/decoding all via software.

@@WillSurridgeTech I must be misunderstanding what you where doing I can etch the proxmox image to a USB stick on a Mac Put it into a Nuc and it works

@@WillSurridgeTech Etcher works perfectly fine on a Mac, perhaps worth checking you have the latest version? I flashed Proxmox to a USB last night on my mac and it booted without any extra steps at all.

you can take full backup/snapshots from inside the proxmox controller
