The Renogy LiFePO4 battery is actually pretty cool & incredibly well designed. First, Renogy uses pouch cells- sort of unusual in larger batteries. But, those pouches are fused together to make cells, then the cells are series together to get it up to 12v. Then, the whole bunch is put into a nice, sized metal case to protect them. The wiring used, the internal fusing- all top notch. Really, a well designed battery- all hidden inside a black box. I DO like the internal build specs, but- personally, I want to be able to 'scale up' to a 24v system and even perhaps a 48v system, thereby allowing thinner wire which is less expensive & easier to pull through RV walls! The Renogy battery cannot be series connected to increase volts- bummer. But, if I was building a 12v system- the Renogy battery would definitely be in the mix!

What is the recommended 12v solar panel array that should be used to charge this 2-battery bank?
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 2 жыл бұрын
It kind of depends on the specific use case. For example, if you're just interested in a light load running off the battery bank, then you can probably get by with a single solar panel in the 100 to 200 watt range. But if you're using more significant resources then you may need 400 watts of solar or more. I think there are some helpful solar calculations online where it takes your input in terms of how many amps you anticipate using on a daily basis and then helps you calculate how much solar you need to replenish your consumption and keep your batteries topped off.

Is there an advantage to using two 100 AH over one 200 AH. I am thinking mostly about summer heat. Is there a heat issue with lithium batteries or any reason two would be better than one as I have the space? Also, I have read that some power converter chargers have adjustable outputs for Lithium, and that some are even able to switch between the two. I will have to get to mine to look up the model unless I have a book for it, which will be my next move, but I could even live with 80% with two of them but does sound like a waste, unless they would last longer that way.
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Glad to help. I think only benefit of having 2x 100ah would be if one failed, at least you still have the other 100ah to use while you replace it. Otherwise I don't think there's any downside to the 200ah, especially if it takes up less space. And, I don't think heat is much of a concern...more so with inverters and such I'd say. Still good to have some breathing room for the lithium batteries though. And, you are correct on some converters having a switch to go between lead acid and lithium. The only one I know of are the Progressive Dynamics models that have that built-in, but there's always new products coming out so be great if they all had that switch. My current RV, a Jayco Pinnacle, was the first RV I've owned that had such a switch thankfully (it has the Progressive Dynamics converter/charger).

One battery is always better than parallel, charging/discharging from one battery is always preferred option.
@WizzRacing
@WizzRacing 2 жыл бұрын
Two batteries in parallel are better. That way if you lose one battery. You still have one working to supply some power..,Plus the sizes of the 100ah allows for different space configuration..The 200ah is 21 inch long. And you can't cut it in half for a side by side install. So yes there are advantages. And these Renogy Batteries self balance across each other. When they are charging. So one battery does not get the short end of the stick..

You say you changed the charger from 55A to 60A. There were comments on when that may, or may not, be necessary. But my question is that the Renogy battery says maximum charging is 50A. So is that 60A going to damage these batteries?
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 2 жыл бұрын
No, the Progressive Dynamics is intelligent for Lithium batteries so it'll be fine...it knows when and how much to supply to lithium batteries. Plus, the batteries themselves have BMS that will restrict. Yes, there are a TON of comments and misinformation about not needing to change out a lead acid charger with lithium batteries. Yes, you can leave your lead acid charger in place...but it will absolutely not top-off the new lithium batteries to full capacity, meaning 100%. It's like only getting some 80-90% of the capacity of the new lithium battery bank. Plus, the charging characteristics are different between lead acide and lithium, so it won't charge as quickly nor efficiently. So it isn't "necessary" but seems like the logical thing to do to replace the charger at same time to one that is lithium compatible.

Not so true when drawing a large amperage,the voltage sags just as much as agm etc,so when setting low voltage alarms you have to take this into account,they will drop between 1-1.6v while supplying big loads then bounce straight back when load is off.

@@AdventureRocks So if I want to replace the factory battery with 2 -100AH Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries on a 2021 micro minnie 1708 TT with 190 watts solar it would be drop in but only charge to 80 percent if I don't upgrade to a lithium charger but it would work. Would the solar controller have to be upgraded. The trailer has a dometic 12v fridge I would like to go a few days without running a generator. Could add a second 190 solar. Have a NOCO 10 amp lithium charger that I would not mind hooking to the generator every few days.Just trying to find out what I can live with and what has to be changed, mostly do not want to ruin something.
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 2 жыл бұрын
@@nkelley104 Yes, that's correct. And, it might charge a little over 80% with your existing lead acid charger...the 80% is just a ballpark. Depending on your solar controller it should have a setting to adjust for lithium (or AGM). The GoPower models when set to AGM work with lithium per the manufacturer at least. So potentially if your existing solar controller is AGM/Lithium compatible then you could use it to top off the remaining 20% or so without having to get a new 12V charger. For reference a new Progressive Dynamics charger (or converter/charger combo depending on your setup) runs in the $200-$300 range on average. They aren't too difficult to wire, but sometimes getting access can make it more time consuming pulling things out to get to it.

You can't discharge Lithium batteries to zero...Unless you want to jump start them. Why you only discharge them to 90%...As you need a 2 volt reference for the charger to work right...As I have two of these. Why they rate them for 1200wh,, But you can get 1350wh out of one..that last 100wh is needed for the charger to work...

So what's smart about it? I understand that battleborn is a drop in replacement for lead acid - electronics included to match charge voltage. True?
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 3 жыл бұрын
It's no smarter than a Battle Born...both can be considered "smart" -- I believe Renogy is just trying to convey the onboard BMS (battery management system). Some cheaper lithium batteries on the market don't have an onboard BMS meaning they may not charge or discharge in an ideal fashion that could lead to damaging the lithium cells or worse causing the battery to malfunction. Or some cheaper ones may have a poorly performing BMS that doesn't really do its job. The BMS just regulates everything in/out to ensure peak performance. The Renogy and Battle Born are technically drop-in replacements for lead acid, but your existing converter/charger on the rig may only know the voltage of a lead acid battery, which means the charger would stop charging when it reaches what it thinks is a full voltage, which is less on lead acid compared to lithium (usually about 80%). Hope this helps!

Regarding the "drop in replacement" aspect, my 15-year old travel trailer has a steel battery box welded to the A-frame between the hitch and trailer body. The box was made to hold two Group 24 size batteries. I ordered two Battle Born 100ah batteries before I took a close look at their specs and measuring my battery box. Come to find out, the Battle Born is more like the size of larger Group 27 batteries. They weren't going to fit in my battery box without me doing some cutting and grinding on the steel box. I didn't really want to do that. Nor was I excited about the prospect of re-routing the battery cables and trying to find a place to install the batteries inside my small trailer. I got really good help over the phone from Battle Born on what my options might be. Since my order hadn't yet shipped, they were very good about canceling my order and refunding payment. From my experience, you won't get anything like that level of support and responsiveness from Renogy. However, the Renogy battery is more like a Group 24 size and would just fit in my battery box, so I reluctantly bought a pair of their batteries. I am in the process of replacing my power center/converter/charger so I haven't yet starting using the new batteries. My impression of Renogy is that they are a mysterious, faceless outfit with subpar support. They are on the, "Due to increased call volume you'll have to wait on hold for over an hour to talk to someone" bandwagon. Some people have said they are a marketing company that just rebrands products from other manufacturers. I don't know about that but just try to find out who they are and how they operate. You will see what I mean. On the other hand, BB is based and manufactured in Nevada. Their CEO and COO appear in many of their support videos. They seem like a top notch company with a bright future. The Renogy batteries were each only $50 less than the BB. My impression is that the batteries are fairly comparable performance-wise for a 12-volt system or I would have kept exploring alternatives. If only they had fit in my box, I would have bought Battle Born for sure. Renogy has a large line of interesting products, largely made in China as best I can tell. I am hopeful that they will become a more transparent, supportive and responsive company. Such changes have to come from the top management, whoever that is. And lastly, they really need to put some effort into improving their terribly reviewed monitoring mobile apps. It's 2021 for crying out loud. End of rant.

Instead of replacing an expensive converter why not buy a cheap lithium battery charger and tie it into the battery.. as the “old” converter charges it to 80percent the cheaper charger tops it off …simply install a 110v outlet in the battery bay or run and extension cord to it …40 bucks for a charger ..and problem solved ? Also renogy has a battery monitor that plugs into one of the ports on the battery for about 39 dollars

The sticker on your charger said 14.6volts which Renolgy say is the Charger max voltage so I concur, the existing charger should be ok.
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's actually my replacement charger you're seeing there in video, so you are correct on the 14.6V for Renogy lithium. Sorry if that wasn't clear that I already replaced my charger. The WFCO chargers that are more common for OEM (as in my case) are programmed for lead acid batteries so they stop charging at less than 14.6V. To be clear you do not HAVE to replace a lead acid charger when upgrading to lithium as it will still charge the lithium battery. But the lead acid charger is programmed for the lead acid profile, which is significantly different than a lithium battery profile. It's a personal decision in the end and you've got to decide if the experience of getting a rapid and optimized charge at 100% on lithium is worth the $200-$300 upgrade cost of a coverter optimized for lithium batteries. Hope this helps!

Are you aware you've put a 60amp charger on a battery that has a max charge rating of 50amps?
@AdventureRocks
@AdventureRocks Жыл бұрын
Yep. The converter/charger doesn't literally output 60A 100% of time, rather it tapers to follow an optimized lithium charging pattern. Think of the rating as a max rating, capable of delivering up to 60A. Also, the Renogy battery has a BMS to optimize the current for charing and discharging. When selecting a replacement coverter/charger, you always want to meet or exceed the original amps. This is important as the same device also converts your 12V panel and you always want more amperage than will be drawn in the end. So if you had a 55A WFCO WF9855 model originally, then you'll need a 60A PD PD9160ALV replacement. Here's a helpful page to select the right one for your coach: www.progressivedyn.com/lithium-converter-replacement-units/
