Thanks for posting the video. I would say that it will save a lot of time and cut down on challenging tightening of bolts if you go ahead and lower the spare and get it out of the way. At the end of the video, it is almost impossible to re-tighten the screws that hold the trim panel on with the hitch already tightened and secured. I would 1. take trim piece off just like the video. 2. lower the spare 3. reinstall the new trailer hitch trim piece and 4. secure the hitch. If you do it in this order, this only takes about 30 min max. Thanks for the post!

I know. I will re-tighten the screw when I had to use the spare tire.

I just installed mine and didn't have to remove spare. Just make sure you put plastic covering first and get an extra set of hands👍

This video is misleading and shouldn’t be used a guide for installing the hitch. The new plastic trim MUST be installed before you install the hitch. If you don’t, you’ll have to remove the hitch to install it. There’s no way to install the trim after the hitch. The video cuts out all this rework. There is a message added about this mistake at the end but it can easily be missed and should have been mentioned before the hitch is installed. The spare tire MUST be removed since the plastic trim that has to be installed first will require the hitch to be moved to where the tire is before it’s moved into the opening in the trim, also the 2 bolts to tighten the trim are above the hitch. If your Pilot is over a year old and has been through a few rainy/snowy seasons you can expect to have some serious rusting on the threads preventing the bolts from screwing in. I used WD-40 Penetrating Oil, CLR, and a toothbrush to loosen the rust. It still required using an impact wrench to carefully screw in all 6 bolts. This was the most time consuming part and took a couple hours. I’m assuming in a brand new pilot this wouldn’t be an issue. That last bolt that’s above the tail pipe can be easily accessed using an impact wrench by disengaging the rubber tailpipe hanger, which slips off with a bit of WD40. I wouldn’t recommend a child helping you hold the hitch; one slip and it can crush their toe/finger. The proper and quickest sequence of steps is written by Honda: www.hondapartsnow.com/resources/installation/HPN/18_AII07699-01.pdf

Hello Meraj Amin - Thanks for your comment. (1) You are correct that the plastic garnish has to be removed first. That was the first piece I removed. Since my car was only a few weeks old, I was able to remove it easily as the grease was still intact. My message at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNmjeqWexKeylp8.html was for when installing the hitch, one should loosely install the garnish while inserting the hitch receiver through the bumper. I installed and secured the hitch first and then try to put the garnish on next. That was a rookie mistake--not a deal breaker and I still did not have to remove the hitch or the spare tire. I was still able to put on garnish without touching the tire or the hitch. Again, my car was new and there were no dirt or debris underneath. I had to hand tight the screws as the spare tire was on the way. You can easily use a socket to tighten all but one of the screw. For it, there is a small gap were you can hand tight the screw. No big deal as it was still tight all around already. I want to share that with everyone. (2) I chose not to remove the spare tire. But it would make it much easier (or necessary) for those cars that have been driven for longer than 6 months and the screws and bolts are no longer have the fresh grease. (3) For those of you who know that are going to need a hitch, get it done sooner as the rust will make it harder the longer you wait. (4) One last comment to all owners, get the OEM hitch as it provides a more finished look. I had an aftermarket hitch for my minivan (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z81kdMaozavJnpc.html) and it is pretty low. The hitch scrapes the driveway and the bumps/dips on the road. If you have not, please feel free to subscribe to my channel.

That is best practice to grease the bolts the first time. No, they will not fall off if you tight them. You can always double check after a few haulings. Just make sure you do everything properly. Good luck. Feel free to subscribe.

"Car panel rivet fastener or lock" Those are called "Drive rivets". Most auto parts stores sell them in a lot of different sizes in case you lose one.

I need a 9 year old. I think I got the first bolt cross threaded on mine. It didn't look like it, but it was really hard to turn all the way in and didn't get tighter when it was all the way in. I guess I'll have to take it out and get a Keensert or Delisert. (I don't think a helicoil would work well in this application even though it's reinforced -- the frame is a bit too thin walled.)

Ha... you need a helper. Oh, that sucked. I recommend all six bolts to be tighten correctly or otherwise there is a safety issue. I really appreciate your guys showing interest in this topic---Thanks. If you have not, please subscribe to my channel.

thanks for the video. I installed mine, 2017 touring. two bolts won't go in, I get 4 turns on the thread and then it hits a snag. I bolted and torqued 4 bolts, two on each side. I will use it primarily for bicycle rack. I think I will be good enough to handle the job. it would be better I could bolt in those two remaining bolts but I don't want to force it and damage the thread. do you guys encounter this same problem?
@SeahorseWorkshop
@SeahorseWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
You should have the 2 bolts tighten. Clean the holes with WD-40 to remove the rust and dirt. There is a small chance that the 2 bolts will come loose due to vibrations. Saw off some threads if you know there is a full thread connection--again, make sure all the threads are in. Here are my bikes kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z81kdMaozavJnpc.html . Thanks for posting this video. I am about to install a Hitch on my Pilot and have a question. Can you please tell me the purpose of lubricating the bolts? Does it keep the threads from being damaged if screwed too tight? Or is it so the bolts can be more easily removed sometime in the future?

I had a problem: The two bolts closest to the rear only went in half way. And they are not going in anymore. I had a big heavy duty socket wrench. I’ll try again when the weather is better, but is this serious?

All six bolts must fully tighten. Otherwise, you are running into safety issues. Please fix it ASAP. Go buy two short bolts and reattach them. I really appreciate your guys showing interest in this topic---Thanks. If you have not, please subscribe to my channel.

Does anyone know if this part fits on a Canadian Model? Canadian Parts is 08L92-TG7-300 instead of 08L92-TG7-100 , but is there really a difference? If yes what is it? What about the harness? 08L91-TG7-301 vs 08L91-TG7-101 ? Would both fit on both Canadian and Us model?

I cannot comment on the Canadian models. Sorry. Whatever you buy, I recommend the Honda OEM model as it blends it nicely. On my other car, I bought an Uhual model and it did not look good. It work but not nicely blend it. I really appreciate your guys showing interest in this topic---Thanks. If you have not, please subscribe to my channel.
