On August 4, 2016, a monumental statue of Athena Parthenos (ca. 170 B.C.) from Pergamon was installed in The Met's Great Hall. A special loan from the collection of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, the statue will remain on display in the Great Hall for two years.

The original Athena Parthenos sculpted by Pheidias has long been lost. It was a chryselephantine sculpture that stood 26 cubits (11.8872 meters) tall and stood in the Parthenon in Athens. The original gold drapery was later removed and replaced with bronze, to then be gilded. Every single sculpture of Athena Parthenos that exists today is a copy, sadly. Another sculpture akin to Athena Parthenos was Athena Promachos, a 22 cubit (10.0584 meters) tall bronze statue of Athena which stood between the Propylaea and the Erechtheion on the Acropolis for 1000 years, before it was moved to Constantinople and there later destroyed by superstitious mob of people. It is tragic that such magnificent works of art have been lost to time. Could you imagine if both of those statues remained on the Acropolis? What majesty. Classical antiquity is an age I wish I had a window to peer into, beyond the books and stories.

It's inside the real Parthenon in Nashville. A statue they felt needed no documenting of its creation mind you, it was simply unveiled after some guy won a contest to build it? 8 years, zero photographic evidence of him doing any work on it? Somethings not right in this realm.

The "supertitius mob" who destroyed Athena's statue relocated to Constantinople were in fact french and venetian crusaders who sacked the city.

This is how museums should cooperate. Lending materials from their collections to one another so the art and antiquities have greater exposure and give many people a chance to see things they couldn't afford to travel to see. Even as a reduced copy of the original Parthenos, this version from Pergamon has a presence that is hard to ignore. Beautiful!

It's truly beautiful but you know the metal will rust, they should have used the stone instead for the connector or joiner.

@@stopcappin2422 I stand corrected, although it wasn't made of gold. It was bronze overlaid with hammered gold sheets. There gold from these pieces was mostly torn off in antiquity, many were marble with gold elements or covered in sheets and many were bronze. Sadly none survive in their original state.

Barbar ? which school have you been to learn about racist ideas ? You are racist and have no idea about the internatinal conventions. Secondly, It is the duty and responsibility of Turkey to protect and safeguard the diverse cultural heritage of the Hellenistic era in its own territory. Elgin Marbles are in England for example, these cultural heritage assets must be in the country of origin.
