So something I've learned in East Texas. The soil breaks down lumber naturally. We would put a rot board a 1x6 along the bottom and level it or run it with the desired grade. And we would set our fence pickets on that. It would keep everything straight and it's cheaper to sacrifice a 1x6 than a entire fence when the rotting occurred.

as a professional I have to say I have many nail guns. They are defiantly the fastest way to build but I have not used one of them in nearly 20 years because screws hole way better on wood when out in the sun. When the sun dries the wood it pulls on the nails and walks them out of the wood. If your going to use the nail gun do so with minimal nails then go back with screws. Take the little extra time and do a better job that will last longer and both you and the homeowner will be more proud of your work.

Ditto on the 1" inch ground clearance, plus you need about a nail thickness between each board for expansion when it gets wet, lastly use screws to attach the boards, nails pull out too easy! 😁👍
@mclovin2991
@mclovin2991 Жыл бұрын
You sound like a man who knows nothing building fence. Yes you’re right about keeping the pickets off the ground but depending on what kind of wood the pickets are, you definitely don’t want to space the pickets with a nail or anything else. They have been in their bundle since leaving the mill so they’re still saturated. Once they’re hung the sun and wind will cure the pickets and they will shrink a ton. And if you use screws to attach the pickets to the rails, all your screw heads will pop off when the pickets swell from rain and irritation and from when it flexes from strong winds. Nails will allow for the flex.

@mclovin2991
@mclovin2991 Жыл бұрын
@@terrybyrd3738 that’s exactly what I do when I have a concrete footer and I’m putting cap on. But using dog ear pickets and a stringline, using a picket on the ground might not work if your group isn’t perfectly level. And if you’re using a picket on the ground, make sure to take it out before you nail off the bottom rail or it will be super difficult to get out

No pressure treated wood? Did the customer want it slammed to the ground or is that what you guys just do? Also why are you facing the 2x4s on the outside of your 4x4 posts instead of cutting and fitting like a normal cedar fence? Just curious, I work for a fencing company in Alaska. All of our posts and 2x4s are pressure treated.
@brianbunnich6221
@brianbunnich6221 Жыл бұрын
This is treated wood. Well the posts are pressure treated at least. (I can tell by the color. Usually master halco or another supplier sells them like this) in my area of michigan it is the law to install it this way. No choices. Directly on the property line in nearly all cities. Both sides must be the same OR your neighbor gets the 'good' side. You cannot have your rails or posts facing your neighbor and you have the 'smooth' side. Also in this area of the Midwest, we do not mortise and tennon the panels, so the fence usually goes on one 'side' of the posts. It's crazy to see how wildly different our trade is across the nation.
@Sackmatters
@Sackmatters Жыл бұрын
@@brianbunnich6221 that is wild. Your guys method looks so much easier and faster to be honest. I had no idea you have to have both sides finished which sounds quite pricy. Most of our customers do finish out so they have the rough side of the job for property value. Our pressure treat is extremely dark in comparison. An actual brown color, I can’t give exact companies because it changes so often, you would believe the amount of wood I have to return.

Professional only means he's getting paid to do it. It doesn't mean he's an expert. Only the posts are treated for ground contact. That being said, I installed fencing for 27 years and never found it to be a problem if the pickets are touching the ground. The athletic beauty of a typical PTP fence lasts about 12 years. After that, it's just an eye sore.
