I've never installed one of these interior sliding doors or as some people call them "barn doors". There originally was a pocket door on the left side of the entrance to the bathroom that the homeowners wanted to get rid of. So this seemed like a good solution. I didn't think there was much to the installation. The rollers bolt to the door. You mount the rail to a header board that gets screwed to the wall. Make sure the rail is level. Then hang your door on the rail. Not very complicated so what could possibly be difficult about this.
There are a few things to deal with that are a little out of the ordinary. To begin with, the door has to be oversized. The reason for this is that the door has two kind of blanket the opening. As a result, the door probably needs to be a minimum of 4 inches larger than the opening for the door. We had a 32 inch opening and so a 36 inch wide door was perfect. However, when you mount the header and rail above the existing trim on the door it requires that several inches of material be added to the length of the standard door in order to make it work. Or you have to have a custom door built which obviously adds more money to the project.
Another question I had that wasn't addressed very well by the instructions or the template was how high does the rail need to be from the floor which means you have to figure out how high above the door do the wheels need to be mounted. So I sort of eased my way through this process by mounting the header where I knew I needed to mount it and then securing the wheels to the door where I figured they needed to go and used the template as a reference. Then I could put the door in place and make a pretty good guess at where the rail needed to be mounted. I first mounted the header board to the wall. Next mounted the left side of the rail to the header board then swung it up to it's position on the right side and drilled a hole for that bolt, being careful to make sure that I mounted the rail level. The hole in the rail on the right side was a little more of a slot than a hole, so it can be moved up or down a little bit to fine tune the placement of the rail.
With the rail in place and secured, the door with the rollers attached can be set on the rail and you're ready for final steps on installation. That involves putting some hardware in place that mounts to the end of each side of the rail and locks in place to keep the door on the rail. There are also a couple of small cushions that are screwed into the top of the door and keep the door from bouncing off the rail if it is slammed into the stop hardware on either end of the rail.
Now, why does our door drift about a foot from left to right when it is in the closed position. The rail is level. The wheels are secured to the door. Some of you may have a better explanation than me about this but my first thought was, "oh great, this thing is going to be a pain to keep adjusted." The fact that the door only opened about a foot led me to conclude there must be a slight dip in the rail through this area. It's possible that if the door were heavier, that might help with some of this. But in the end, after talking to the homeowners, this is what we came up with. First, this is the bathroom door that primarily needs to be either open or closed. Since the bathroom is completely remodeled, it's most likely that the door will be left open except for when is in use. So the fact that the door tends to want to slide to the right or in the open position is not necessarily a bad thing. We just need for to stay closed when it needs to be closed. After some thought we came up with this solution which works great. I took a couple of magnets and embed them in blocks that were then mounted on the backside of the door and up against the trim on the right side of the doorjamb. So when the door gets near to the closed position the magnets take over and draw together and in so doing, keep the door closed. Plus the magnets are really never seen. With the door guides mounted to the floor, the magnets have no chance to do anything except be drawn to each other when the door is closed. We need to come up with a sliding bolt type lock for inside the bathroom since this is a bathroom door. But that's an easy fix.

The rail may be set up like that on purpose. If you flip it upside down it would always remain open or closed as opposed to drifting to the middle. The middle would be high rather than low. Would recommend checking the rail to see if it’s straight

We had the same problem. Take a grinding wheel to put a groove at the top of the rail for the wheel to sit in. My carpenter did it on both ends of the rail so it would stay in the full open or full closed position. No more phantom rolling.

That was one of those 'necessity mother of invention' things! The ultimate problem was that the door was too lightweight for the hardware when the air drafted through the doorway so that's what caused it to drift open. It’s funny you bring that up because I honestly don’t remember having a good reason for hanging the rail from one end and swinging it up! That was my first barn door install. I think now, since I use a laser, I mark the center point of the headerboard and rail and drill my first hole in that area which creates sort of an airplane propeller effect! Thanks Bman310! Yeah, turned out to be a pretty simple fix after I was kind of concerned about how to deal with the issue. Nice fit. My tuppence worth on the sliding door is a slight dip in the track. Solution flip the track over then the door will slide open or closed depending if it is over the rise in the middle. I plan on fitting two sliding doors soon and was thinking of getting the track bent slightly in the middle (only about 1/8th to 1/4 over 6ft6) so door self closes or self opens
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 4 жыл бұрын
That's possible, 1988dgs. One thing we figured out was that we had a pretty good draft from the air conditioner vent in the bathroom coming through the opening. The wheel hardware was very smooth and it ultimately was the air that was moving the door, since it only opened about a foot. Anyway, the magnets worked great! Good luck with your project!

Just slightly loosen the lags in the middle, push it up and tighten so that there is an ever so slight pitch in opposite directions. If there isn't any "play" in the hole on the rail, take it down (or do it before you install and over size the hole to allow for it.

Yeah, Jeff, I think that may have been possible but we didn't consider it at the time. I actually think the issue was that we used a hollow core door and it may have been too light for the hardware. The door only move about a foot and if the door were heavier, that old inertia principle may have kept the door from drifting. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks, Justin! You pretty much nailed it. There was an A/C vent in the bathroom that was creating a draft through the opening. Because we used a hollow core door, the light weight allowed the door to drift about a foot. A heavier door probably wouldn't have moved. The magnet solution worked out great so it wasn't something we needed to change.

so with this type of door you can leave all the wood trim around the original door? I got the idea yesterday to use this type of door from my kitchen to my small laundry room that will eliminate the space an open door takes up inside the small laundry room. Glad you showed it can be done with a colonial door, which is what we have around the rest of the house.
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the new door cleared the door trim by about 3/4" after installation. I used a standard hollow core colonial door from Lowes... very inexpensive. I needed to add about 3" overall height to the door so I split the difference and added 1 1/2" to top and bottom of door. Cut pieces from a 2x4. Other dimensions that might be helpful. I used a 36" door to cover the 32" opening which worked out just right for a bathroom door. Most expensive part was the hardware which was about $140 I think, also from Lowes. Good luck, sound like a good idea!

Yeah, Jason, I think the bar was pretty true and was installed level. What I ultimately concluded was that if the door were a heavier solid core door, that would have helped. The drift was only about a foot or so which was puzzling. Also, there was a pretty good draft from the air conditioning through that door opening and when coupled with the light weight door probably was the explanation.

They just need to be strong enough to react to one another when there is a little distance between them as they pass each other. I actually made a lock for this door and did a video on it, but I think there are locks available online these days that are designed for barn doors.

@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Jason, I think I had some magnets in the shop that I believe I had picked up from Harbor Freight. I tried to get the thickness of the wood pieces to the point that when installed, as they crossed each other they would have enough pull to hold the door at that point. It was pretty much a trial and error effort that I hit on the first attempt. Installing the magnets was just removing enough wood to get the magnets to flush out with the surface of the wood pieces, then using epoxy to secure them in place. Good luck! I bet you pull it off, no problem!

Confused, So how high should the track be from on top of the door frame (jamb)? Thanks
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 5 жыл бұрын
It is confusing, Gindy Virk! There isn't a universal answer to that. It also depends on the brand of hardware you buy and the height of your door. Easiest answer is to figure out where your wheels are going to mount on your door and temporarily secure them in place. Put your door in place over the door opening. Raise it off the floor or carpet to it's finished hanging height with shims. Hold your rail up where it should be mounted in relation to the wheels on the door. Mark your locations for the rail (track) and go from there. Probably will need a second set of hands. As with everything, it is much easier the second time around!

@RustyDobbs

Yes, Joseph. I kind of skipped over that in the video but that's exactly what I did here. Pulled the pocket door frame completely out and framed a wall in its place under the header. Then trimmed out the entrance opening to the bathroom just like you would for a regular door installation.

That dip in the rail was at the center where it is weakest and thus bends slightly down. I would drill a hole at the center and attached it to the wall with a screw. But the solution of having positive stops is better. Just put something slim on the rail that the rolls can roll over but takes a bit of conscious effort to do. One for the closed position and one for the open position.

Thanks Mark. I think what we ultimately determined was that we had a very lightweight door and hyperactive wheels on our hardware along with a pretty good draft from the air conditioner vent in the bathroom that moved the door open about a foot. But the magnets turned out to be a solution that everyone was happy with. Thanks for your comment.

Was looking for something else... looks like you sort out problems pretty good on the go. Installed the barn door, came out great. But did not anticipate the huge gap on both sides... and it is for a bathroom. Ever come across trying to close the gap and make it more private?
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Fred, the dimensions of the the barn door hardware drive a lot of what you encounter with gaps after installation. You can go to a thinner header board to move the door closer to the door trim and even use a thicker door trim. In this case, we had a 36" door covering a 32" door opening. The funny thing about this job was that before the remodel, there was a double sided fireplace to the right of the door opening and the tub was directly on the other side of the fireplace. So that added a whole other meaning to lack of privacy! The owners were delighted with the amount of privacy they felt they had after remodel! I guess it's all a matter of perspective. This was also a master bath so the bathroom itself was very separate from the rest of the house. Thanks for the comment!

Great Video Rusty. I have a question, how tight can you make this door against the door frame?, I see a gap of about 1/2 inch for the door in your video. Thanks!
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Blueknife! You can make it a tight as you can get away with! Obviously, it will never seal like a regular hinged door, but there is no problem with adjusting the gap. You mostly do that by playing with the thickness of the header board. You can also open the wall up and put in wood backing for securing the barn door rail which eliminates the header board altogether. Lots of ways to go about this stuff!

Hello, what type of handle did you use in the inside of the bathroom on the slider door? I want to put one like that on mine. And how do I do it cause I have a hollow door. What's the best way to secure it?
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
In this case, rocker2626, I just took a small piece 1x2 pine and cut it into an oval shape, then sanded, painted and mounted it on the inside of the door. It needed to be able to slide past the door jamb trim when the door was opened, so it had to be thin. This was also a hollow core door, so I used silicon caulk with countersunk screws to hold it in place then filled the screw holes with plugs painted to match.

How about the issue of noise since its not a sealed door to a door stop. Wide open 1 inch spaces on each side. Any ideas on solving this issue
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 5 жыл бұрын
You could get away with reducing the thickness of the header to gain maybe 3/8". Also check various manufacturers of hardware to see if some is available with thinner tolerances overall. Otherwise for bathroom uses, you just need to determine if a barn door is appropriate for the privacy or lack thereof they provide. In this case, this was a master bathroom that was quite large and had a separate room in it where the toilet was located behind a sealed door.

@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
There are probably more ways than this but here are a few, Armando. Cut a slot in the sheetrock above the door where the header board could mount directly to the studs. That would save 1/2" and could be finished so that it would not show. Use a thinner piece than 3/4" material for the header board. Would be ok as long you could lag into a few studs. Finally, cut custom molding that is thicker than standard to trim out the jamb. In my installation, the door was 36" wide and the opening was 32" so we had a solid 2" overlap on both sides of the door. Plus, the toilet was in a separate room in the bathroom with a regular door on it, so additional privacy was not a big concern to my customer. Thanks for the comment!

Yes, Paula, a barn door could be mounted inside the bathroom from an installation standpoint. I always caution people though about using barn doors near more public areas in the house. Hello, what size screws should one use for the header board?
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kale. My primary guideline would be to sink your fasteners at least a couple of inches into the studs to secure the header board. Assuming your framing is typical, the studs should be about 16" on center. You likely will have a framing header above the door opening behind the sheetrock. In the video, I think I used 7/16" x 3" long lag bolts to attach the header board. Another option, if needed, is to use toggle bolts or variations thereof. I just put up a video yesterday that explores the strength of toggles. The link is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9yUZLeKq9HSn3k.html. Good luck. Thanks for your question.

@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 4 жыл бұрын
I never really thought about trying that, Sam! The wheels were so smooth for this brand of hardware, it seemed like they came off roller blades or something. The lightweight door and a little A/C draft through this door opening were enough to cause it to drift about a foot but the magnets actually worked out well. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future! The last barn door hardware I installed had wheels that seemed to have a little more friction built into them so the drift issue never was a problem. Have one more to do in a few weeks so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

I'm not sure I completely understand your explanation, Richard, but let me answer this way. The only things to be concerned about with your barn door are mounting the rail level and hanging the wheels so that they're each positioned to roughly carry half the weight of the door. The shape of the door can pretty much be what you want to meet your design challenges otherwise. Hope that helps and good luck with your project!

Hi, Julie, and thanks for watching! There was nothing special about the magnets and I think I actually bought them from Harbor Freight. You just want to make sure their pretty strong to still attract to each other from maybe a quarter-inch or so distance apart. As you can see in the video, all I did was recess them into wood blocks and then mount them to the door and wall. On the lock, I ultimately ended up doing a novelty type of lock for these customers and made a video on it called “A Lock for a Bathroom Barn Door”. These days I think there are other locks available online specifically for barn doors, so you may want to do a search for that. Good luck if you're planning to do this project or if you're having an issue with keeping a barn door closed, I hope the magnet idea works for you too!

When you first hung the door on the rail you were missing the middle bolts. Did you take the door off again before putting those middle bolts in? If not you may have bolted the rail down while it was sagging ever so slightly in the middle from the weight.
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
I hear your reasoning, Scary Fast. I'm not sure it would apply here because the door was actually a hollow core door that was very lightweight. In fact, we ultimately decided that reason the door moved was because the air flow from the air conditioning was actually pushing the door because it was so light. I think a solid core door would have put enough downward force on the barn door wheels, that the door may have stayed put. Thanks for the comment!

I haven't personally had one. My guess in this installation is not particularly well because we used a hollow core door. Seems like there isn't much in the way of privacy because of the space between the door and the trim. Is there a solution for this?
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, Patricia. No doubt that barn doors are not as private as hinged doors. In this case we used a 36" door on a 30" opening so when closed, the door overhung the opening by 3" on each side. You are probably talking about the lateral space between the door and the trim. It could be reduced by reworking the way the rail is hung on the header above the door. It's a little tricky but could be done. Imagine this... the wall to the right of the barn door used to be a double sided fireplace with the tub right on the other side of the fireplace. The homeowners actually hung a piece of fabric with magnets on the fireplace side in the bathroom. So, doing away with the fireplace when I remodeled the bath solved their big privacy issue so the barn door privacy question never came up.

Rusty Dobbs what if you added "weather striping" of some sort, simlar to an exterior door. Like the magnet, any weather stripping or felt around the frame would be hidden by the door as it is oversized. It might also help with reducing sound so you don't hear the loud shower or anything else while someone is in the bathroom and another person in the bedroom.

If I'm understanding you correctly, Barb, you are asking about the single handle mounted on the outside of the barn door. It's a handle that matches the other door hardware in the house and mounts directly to the door surface with two screws so it doesn't pass through the door. We mounted a thin plate that your fingers can be used to open and close the door from the inside.

@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t know that it really matters, Crys, because a hollow core door is so lightweight. The main thing you want to do is to select a location on the door to mount the hardware where you have at least one bolt passing through a solid portion of the hollow core door which is most likely going to be near the edges. Then you just want to snug the bolts up against the door and not tighten them to the point that you crush the hollow core portion of the door. I have done another barn door on a master bathroom video in the past few months that is an update to this one where I going to little more detail on the installation process that you may find helpful. Thinking of putting in a double barn door in our home with the intention of making a guest room out of an open office. Are the spaces between the trim and door large enough to see through? I'm worried about a lack of privacy there. Thanks!
@RustyDobbs
@RustyDobbs 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, King, that is something to be concerned with. Here are a couple of things to think about. The distance between the trim and door is determined by the way the rail is hung. Insetting the headerboard into the drywall instead of mounting it on top of it moves your finished door the thickness of the drywall closer to the trim. You can also use a door(s) that are the width of your opening plus the width of the trim on both sides of the opening. You can get away with going a little wider still, if needed. Those two suggestions alone should pretty well address the visual privacy concerns. Obviously, a latch where the double doors meet would still need to be installed. Soundproofing is another story that is a problem with barn doors. No way to get them close to being as soundproof as a hinged door installation. Hope that helps!
