Note to ATOTO, modify how screen is secured so that you can use the mounting screws from any side. >>>>. I wish my mom's '96 Olds had had that headunit. I wish all my cars had that headunit. Points to ATOTO for adding Bluetooth 5 and some good codecs. Bluetooth 5 locks onto a device a lot better than previous versions. It has a QLED display? For under $300? That is N I C E ! BTW, my only experience with Olds/Buick was the last 3 cars my mom drove. Hated them all, especially the '96 Olds. The driver's seat felt like I was sitting on a bucket, and not an upside down bucket. The brakes felt like they were from before power brakes. And the #1 reason I hated that car, about 10 years ago, while driving in heavy Friday evening traffic on the San Diego Freeway, in the far left lane of a 6 lane freeway, suddenly the steering wheel became so hard to turn that I had to use every bit of my strength to make even the slightest change. My mom had driven that same freeway to pick me up from where I was getting my truck worked on. All I could imagine was that steering wheel problem happening while she'd been driving only minutes before. At the repair shop they showed me that the shaft of a pulley had bent at about a 30* angle and the belt slipped off. Is that the only pulley for the power steering? I was moving at 40-50 mph when it went. Never had such a hard time steering. I thought for sure another car would hit us but we made it safely off the freeway. I had a lot of motorists angry at me even though I was flashing the car's emergency lights. Anyone care to share any similar stories?
@michaeltutty1540

Earlier editions of the front wheel drive "big" GMs had a fault inside the steering rack. It would start as being harder to turn one way than the other. Eventually it would simply lock up. I know a few people who crashed because of it. It was a defective valve in the centre of the rack. All of them were under 100,000 miles. Meanwhile my 90 Volvo is at 400,000 miles with the factory steering rack still perfect. It has had a new coupler and new outer tie rod ends, but the rest is all 31 years old. The joy of a one owner car!

That huge ATOTO works great for the Buick. Nice job. If you ever need something with similar functionality for the ZHP, I recommend the Eonon GA9450 unit. It's only a 7" display but it has factory looking controls and fits perfectly in the dash and plugs into the factory harness.

As far as those connectors go, butt splices are fine as long as you have the wires stripped at the proper lengths, use a properly sized splice based on the wire gauge, and use a good quality ratcheting crimper, preferably Thomas and Betts or Burndy but they have a decent one at Harbor Freight. This is nearly 25 years of crimping experience for mainly telecom DC power connections talking.
@wriddle082
@wriddle082 3 жыл бұрын
Also, I think to get back your steering wheel button functionality, there may be an additional GM-specific interface that you’ll need to use. My 05 Sierra would need this if I ever changed the stock head unit. It also returns the functionality of OnStar and the key buzzer chimes that normally run through the speakers. And GM antenna plugs are (I’m sure intentionally) different from those of every other vehicle make.

Very good information here, Jake. Well done. What I use for those connections is the heat shrink with solder and flux. A one step soldered joint that I then seal in more heat shrink. I've never had any issue doing it that way. That size and brightness of screen would drive me batshit crazy. Too much of my driving is on 2 lane roads in the country at night. I can't even stand the back lit instrument clusters in new cars. I much prefer the old front lit cluster. I'm also not used to, nor do I want, anything in my car that means I must look at a touch screen. That is, to me, dangerously poor ergonomics. Picking up parts for my 90 Volvo, I looked at the new V90. When I asked the salesperson how to use the controls without taking eyes off the road, I was told that the passenger should use them. I laughed out loud.

Currently rocking KZ ZSNs with a balanced cable and Fiio BTR3K. Also a set of Fiil T1X true wireless buds for when I'm doing yardwork (lacking some detail but amazing soundstage). Also have a set of Koss PortaPros with Yaxi earpads that I listen to through a USB C Apple dongle (one of the best DACs on the market under $100 due to economies of scale). This setup is seriously great. For speakers my TV in the house is hooked up to some Pioneer GS-G403s through a cheap receiver with a 12" Klipsch sub filling in the bottom. Computer is hooked up to a Sony STR-K6800P (I hate this thing) receiver with a pair of ???? logitech something-or-anothers whose internal amp died and was thusly bypassed. Subwoofer for that one is the 100w sub that came with the receiver, but with a Skar audio 8" driver put in it. It's ok. Might move the driver and amp board into a custom sealed case. The port is super woofy. In the shop is that random Fisher speaker as well as a single orphaned Klipsch KG3.2 that sounds amazing and I someday want to have an actual stereo set of KGs. I'll probably part out the one I have since finding another orphaned KG3 is nearly impossible.

Dude, is that an 80s vintage Fisher speaker on your bench at 15:30? I have a functional pair that look similar as well as the system they came with. It all works except the receiver.

Yep. Mid-range 80s stuff. Not amazing, not awful. It makes sound. I have a pair of old Pioneer GS-G403 hooked up to my TV with a 12" Klipsch sub filling in the low end. It's similarly okay. Not amazing. I'd love to get some "real" speakers but I realized that while $600 will buy some mediocre speakers, $600 will buy world-class headphones and $60 will buy a solid set of IEMs.

I say you one up Elliott and buy Ed's Ferrari from Car Trek 4. Yes they haven't shot it yet, or are shooting it now, but when they get done. Call dibs. Elliott might have a Ferrari derived engine...you can have a Ferrari car. We'll get you 250k subscribers somehow.. I have recommended you to Life of Palos as well. Of course he is friends with John Ross so I would think he would give you a shout out, but so far, just Elliott. I'm trying Jake. You are the Steve Wright of automotive KZfaq and dammit, I appreciate that.
