Installing a Driveway Channel Drain

Our driveway slopes down towards our garage and we would often end up with a small lake when it rained. In 2008 we installed a central drain to redirect the water away from the driveway to the lower side of our property. While this eliminated the lake, we still had some minor puddling, and sediment washed down under our cars. So we decided to pour concrete slabs where we park our cars. To further improve drainage and prepare for the new slabs, we installed a new channel drain running the full width of our driveway.

Nice neat work! Do it right the first time! I like how your form work kept the channel drain suspended to allow the concrete to slush it’s way underneath.

Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. There isn't much to see during a rain storm. Since we added concrete pads on either side of the drain - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7yCqLOFqayoo4U.html - it just gets wet. The water runs off down the drain as expected. Except for that time the tree root grew into the drain pipe - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9SHmLOSrJvYZoE.html

Yeah, prep work is usually the hardest part of any concrete job. I had to ensure I had the proper slopes from the sidewalks on either side of the garage, as wall as having the drain slope to the middle to connect to the pipe from the original drain. I also had to plan for 4 inches of concrete on either side of the drain as well as under the drain. A lot of work for something that looks so simple when it's done. :)

@@AnthonyWatsonDIY looks tidy, usually here on site in the uk its laid on 5 to 7 inches of semi dry with a finished tarmac base, or pavers or whatever the spec is, but for a residential job with road base/ stone finish it really does look good and a standout feature of otherwise a featureless driveway, not sure how practical it would be in terms of cost wise with labour and materials side being a much higher cost but again the results are very nice.

Hey Anthony, That looks great! What material did you use to cover your drain during the pour? Thx.
@AnthonyWatsonDIY

We just used a few rows of blue masking tape pressed firmly onto the grate. It worked fine during the pour, and was easy to remove afterwards.
@MLGardener2010
@MLGardener2010 3 жыл бұрын
But can you get the grate off to clean out the drain? isnt it ususally buffered with a foam strip (Expansion material) between concrete to allow the flex needed to get the grate off?
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The grates fit inside the sides of the drain, and don't contact the concrete, so they lift out easily. We just pulled all the grates last weekend and cleaned the drain out for the first time. No issues other than fine dirt kind of wedges them in place. Once the dirt is cleared away they go in and out easily.

Anthony - nice work! I have a question after watching your video. Looks like you might have installed NDS channel drain, perhaps the 5" Pro Series, or something similar. I assume this was not the more expensive "pre-sloped" type of trench drain (such as NDS Dura Slope) that allows for the grate to be level, but rather is intended to be installed at a pitch. I've watched NDS videos indicating recommended pitch is 1 percent or greater. Is this what you did? Do I see from the video that you more or less divided your run into two sections, each draining to a center outlet? What pitch did you install the grates at, and do you think it has worked out well? I'm looking to install inside of a barn and am thinking of going as little as 0.7% pitch (matching the slope of the NDS Dura Slope) but hoping it is not too little. Any comments would be most appreciated. Again, nice work on your project. Al
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, NDS 5" Pro series drain from the box stores. The only reason I have both ends drain to the center is because we had an existing drain line to connect to. I think the slope is roughly 1/4 inch drop per lineal foot, but I could be wrong. I had a lot of different slopes to accommodate, from the existing sidewalks on each end, the slope of the drain line, and the slope of the slabs on either side. I had an issue with a tree root clogging the old drain line, but once that was removed I've had no issues with the channel drain. It works very well.
@alexander0194
@alexander0194 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyWatsonDIY Thanks for your reply. Did you have to use a special adapter in the center where the two slopes come together, or is there enough flexibility/wiggle with those trench drains such that you can do that without an adapter?
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexander0194 Nothing special, there's a little bit of play between sections, so I kind of adjusted the two slopes with the middle three sections. Each joint bends a little instead of doing all the bend at one joint. It probably wasn't necessary, but I also added some gutter sealant where each section joined together. Once it's all encased in concrete it probably doesn't matter.

Hello. I enjoyed the video. I have a very similar situation. I have a gravel driveway. My question is does any of the driveway (stones, fines, etc) wash into the channel drain especially during heavy rain ? Thanks

We don't really get any stones in the drain, but we did add concrete slabs on each side of the drain (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7yCqLOFqayoo4U.html). I also added a tee and downpipe as a small catch basin at the drain entrance (sort of visible at 3:44 in the video), to collect stones before they wash down the drain line. Fir needles are really our biggest problem, since we have a large fir tree directly above the drain. Those collect on the grates and inside the driveway drain, so we do have to clean those out 2 or 3 times a year. Not a big problem, just another maintenance item. Still beats a flooding driveway.
@jcustenborder
@jcustenborder Жыл бұрын
Nice work! Have you had much sediment show up in the channel drain? I'm considering this on a gravel driveway.
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY Жыл бұрын
We get surprisingly little sediment build up in the drain. However, we are surrounded by fir trees and the drain does tend to collect a lot of fir needles. So we have to clean the drain out a couple times a year. It's a maintenance item, but the drain more than makes up for that. No more lake in the driveway.

Nice job looks great but doesn't the water just percolate threw the gravel?
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 3 жыл бұрын
With gentle showers yes, but steady rain collected faster than it could drain through the gravel. Also, the drain was just the first step before we poured concrete slabs on either side. See the video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7yCqLOFqayoo4U.html

what kind of plastic did you use to cover the channel when you laid the concrete?

We just used blue masking tape (painters tape), making sure to press it onto the channel before pouring. It held up fine during the pour and was easy to remove afterwards.

Anthony Watson no problem to drive over it?
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@frenchapple1458 We are currently working on pouring slabs on either side of the drain, so we haven't driven on it yet. However, NDS says it is class B rated for autos and light trucks at speeds under 20mph. It probably wouldn't hold up to a dump truck, but it should be fine for our needs. The smaller plastic drain that we replaced held up fine after being driven over for years.

can you dive a car over it without any damaged to the metal channel
@AnthonyWatsonDIY
@AnthonyWatsonDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The channel is actually all plastic, but yes it is rated for passenger vehicles and small trucks (SUV's, Pickups, etc.). Once it's encased in concrete on both sides and underneath it's quite strong. You may not want to drive a dump truck over it, but for typical vehicles it's fine.
