Big lesson learned about asking thy neighbors. It took me trial and error and years to work up the courage to ask my neighbor if I could discharge runoff via a pipe to a creek behind his backyard because my yard is a low point surrounded by other properties. He understood my situation and was cool with it.

There is nothing wrong with trying to do something, even if it doesn't work. You adapt and learn from your mistakes. It's called life. Thanks for the video, and props to Carson for being humble enough to have the world see his mistakes.

The ducks were the true stars of the videos! I mean Shawn and Carson were instrumental (LOL), but I loved how they were curious about everything and closely hanging around for any snack they dug up. Videos like this are why I keep coming back to watch and learn. Need to see the mistakes and how they were fixed to get the best result. No doubt Carson's house build will never have a drainage issue thanks to what he learned dealing with water at the garage shop. DIYers appreciate the whole story. Excellent episode.

Very interesting 2 part series. Carson is a champ for agreeing to show all the decisions made and carried out, and then corrected. I was thinking watching that 8" pipe going in what a lot of work it was and if the garage was higher and culverts cut it would be so much easier. Those points were addressed, and sometimes you have to go with your best estimate at the time. But a lot of water is a lot of water and it was great to see how it all came out after cutting those big ole culverts. A lot of issues besides water covered in this series and that's what sets you apart Shawn. I really appreciate the discussions of ethical behavior, how to work with a client, and how to work with a friend, what you have to think about, etc.

this 2-parter just feels like boys troubleshooting a large drainage problem and dealing with issues whenever it occurs, so in the end both you and Carson learned a whole lot in the process, and that is the kind of knowledge that sticks to you throughout your whole life

Well hes now ready for the bigger storms with double the protection! Mother Nature is unpredictable and Shawn has her figured out most times! I love it keep em coming!

The amount of work that trencher and small bucket on the excavator saves is crazy!!

One technique I use to get an almost perfect circular cut around PVC pipe is to wrap a sheet of A4, A3 or newspaper around the pipe with all edges meeting up along the paper edge. Then I just trace the edge of the paper with a black marker. Any imperfections in the cut can be hone back to the marker line using a grinder. I congratulate Carson for allowing honesty to shine through so that we all benefit from this endeavour.

His neighbor was considerate. I like that your french drain / catch basin is now a very good backup system. And that trench is like redirecting a true intermittent stream! Had the neighbor not agreed, I wonder if a deep foundation perimeter wall would have succeeded. Who knows. You both did good with a very tough situation there!

When I say mistake, it’s not really, you now have a system that does you gutters so it was only a bit more time and unfortunately expense that wasn’t needed but as they say in aviation “learn from other people’s mistakes as you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself!” By the way Carson that is a great shed and your lake looks amazing, you have put a lot of work into it, good luck with the house build bet it will be super cool too. 😀👋🇬🇧

The catch basin became the primary drainage path vs the French drain with the swale built behind the fence. Basically 80% of the drainage equation was taken out of effect.

oh my that's a lot of water. Glad he was able to talk to the neighbor and just keep the water completely away from the building. That makes the most sense and when you have a neighbor who doesn't care, it is a no brainer to to do it that way. 👍 The ducks were rowdy. lol Your honesty and going back to client's homes/businesses after a rainstorm is why I like your channel. Too many drainage channels that never show if it actually worked.

You must get tremendous rainfall where you’re working. I live in a reasonably dry part of Australia and we have to catch as much rain as possible to fill our big tanks for usage. Some properties are completely on rainfall only so these require huge poly tanks. Pretty much every house has a rain water tank. It’s so unusual to watch plumbing to remove water rather than storing it but I’m really enjoying watching your work. Well done. I’m learning a lot. 😊

Wow, this is one of your best videos ever. I can’t believe you guys worked with that 8 inch pipe-what a pain. I think 6 inch would’ve been adequate given the flow coming out. Maybe removing catch basin cover during storms would have helped with capacity. Super tough project and I really appreciate your honesty throughout so we can all learn. Completely negated the need for a french drain with that swale, which looks like it was the correct solution all along. Live and learn. Nice property and I can recall seeing it in a few other projects.

Great job, most important part of any job is to show mistakes and solutions , so other people can learn and avoid them. For my personal not professional opinion - for that amount of water flow during storm catchbasin had no enough capacity, and I am not really sure any catchbasin will handle that river, so redirecting water before it goes toward building was the only correct solution. Really appreciate your videos Sean, and based on your knowledge and videos I have built my own water catching/diverting solution. thanks again.

Really interesting video Shawn. Over the years I have learned and shared with others that if you're going to buy a house or piece of land go there in the worst of weather like a heavy downpour or after a big snow storm. See the worst conditions you'll have to deal with. I know real estate agents want to take you to show you on a bright sunny day in May and sell you on a rosy picture. That's much different than having to wade through a flooded driveway or backyard. Anyway, great video as usual Shawn the friendly banter is always fun to watch too.
