The Somewhat Handy Man

Howdy! On this episode I put up my second Cover Pro portable storage shed / garage from the good ol' Harbor Freight. Got it on sale for about $180 I think. My last one lasted half a season then got crushed by snow. Whoops!
Thanks for stopping by. Back to mobile home work on the next one.

If it ever rips or gets damaged just throw some tin roofing on the frame and you’ll have yourself a metal shed.

How exciting to start a bit inside work now! What a great job working on your property. Nice to have the shelter up for storage.

I've owned several of this garages, the tarp will only about three seasons. If it snows ❄️ heavy, it will tear it all up from the weight

Yup! The one that collapsed is on about season 3 on the ground covering a lot of lumber. I think it's good for a little while longer since it's really shaded where it's at so not too much uv damage. I just need this new one to last a year or two to give me time to build some real sheds.

I would get some pool noodles and wrap the top poles. The sun hitting the top and heating those rods seems to ruin that tarp faster.

Nice! Almost done with mine. I’ll be using it for auto detailing since our shop got water damage from a fire being extinguished 2 units down. Downside, it’s 12x20 so it’s a bit tight, but the upside is I get to work from my crib which saves on gas and time significantly. This is necessary for snow, rain and wind. My house it “L” shaped so the canopy is inside the L protected from the elements well and the other side is all trees. I think I’ll add a metal frame over it just to be cautious but either way, I’ll keep track of the weather and anytime it snows I’ll constantly get the snow off so it doesn’t accumulate

Cool. Yeah, we had a bit of snow a few weeks ago and I was out there constantly getting it off. Worked out OK.

Mine held up fine in the snow, it was the hail that shredded it haha. glad to see ya posting

Ha, yeah, we don't have to worry about those golf ball sized ice balls up here! The tarps on these things are really not that bad, it's the thin metal poles that do them in on these Harbor Freight models. But yeah, been slacking on the posting just trying to get the interior a little more comfortable for full time living and when you're living primitively it just takes so much more time to do the basics. I get to shower outside with a camp heater (got to do that in the snow today, ha!) and wash my dishes outside, fill my toilet tank with 5 gallon buckets, etc. Good times! :)

@@thesomewhathandyman9400 haha well I know all about primative living. ya it takes a lot longer. especially hauling the water from the gas station back home :(

it'll b awesome semi shed to sort and store your bits and bobs, nothing worst than moving stuff round and round indoors when your trying to build. hugsx

Thanks! You are so right too! I feel like half my time is just spent moving things around. Especially now that I'm living in the construction zone.

Awesome, great shed, we had something similar and used plastic palettes for keeping our stuff off the ground, before winter if you get a chance you could run some 1X1’s lengthwise (front to back) between the canvas and the roof supports to give it a bit more stability so the water can’t pool up, we added a bit more to our roof and it helped for a bit longer until we built a shed. Nice to see it progress

Oh, those plastic pallets sound like a great idea. Good idea on the wood runners too. We actually just had about 5 or so inches of snow last night. I was out there ever few hours till about 2 in two in the morning brushing it off. Ha! Luckily the rain doesn't pool up. Thanks!

@@thesomewhathandyman9400 ohh right I bet you probably have had some by now as even we’ve gotten a dusting too, they’re threatening some later next week..holy smokes people just don’t know what to do here when it snows, we usually don’t get it until later January or sometime February then it’s gone in a day or two

@@reasonablerandys yeah, this is very unusual to have any low elevation snow before late December, and yup never sticks around for long.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean there but either way, she's still standing after two winters so which ever way I staged it, it has worked out well. :)

Thanks for the reply! In other words the ends point in at each other. Not pointing down the sides. Glad to hear it’s still up. I think it just pulls the tape around the pole differently.

I've found that they are. The one I have that collapsed two winters ago seems to still keep the wood dry that under it.

Everyone has been supportive. I may have mentioned one that was being a slight bit passive aggressive about how long it was taking but I think they were just trying to encourage me to get people to help me. A lot of folks couldn't believe I was going to try and rebuild it so maybe that's what I talked about but yeah in the end everyone has cheered me on, especially now that it's actually looking like a house again. Thanks!
