#logcabin #offgrid #metalroof
Settling back home from my log cabin tour and wildlife photography trip to Alaska, my first project is to install a new metal roof on the side porch and west side of my off grid log cabin in the Canadian wilderness, unfortunately replacing the shou sugi ban roof system in the process. Working alone has its challenges, especially when installing ice and water shield to the roof boards and handling large sheets of metal roofing as I carry them down the trail to the cabin and then lift them into place on the wood roof.
Cali is happy to see me return home from my trip and immediately gets back to her fetching duties, in the forest as well as out on the lake.

I’m having a coffee in Dubai Mall surrounded by Rolexes watching your video thinking “what have I done wrong with my life to feel at peace watching you working in the middle of a forest with your best friend for a company”. I envy your decision to switch your life so “dramatically” Shawn. Watching your videos never feels like a waste of time to me. In fact, if I ever managed to go back to the country side it would be thanks to you my friend. Thank you for sharing

Awesome Shawn...you are really living the dream! Good for you and Cali. Your family will know how blessed they are when they are there too. In sure they must already know thanks to you and God who has made your dreams come true! I love watching you saw and build, even the sounds are so crisp and true to the wilderness. I love hearing the crackle as the trees fall and as the branches snap. The fact that you enjoy what your doing so much and you are so good at it is all the more interesting to watch as you create so many beautiful things from nature. God bless you each and every new day🤗

Thanks for the sounds of my childhood. I'm 74 now and I remember helping my father build our house in relatively rural Minnesota. You say the "ou" sound very much like we do. I like the sound of Cali panting, the sound of the tape measure, the sound of wood, the sound of your carpenters tools clanging on your apron, etc. Makes me smile.

I don't know if you have plans for a greenhouse, but I feel it would make a fantastic addition to your other out buildings. Greenhouses are such a staple to aid with living off grid. Here in the outer Melbourne Suburbs, we have mainly tiled roofing, some colour bond steel roofing, so this was something that really opened my eyes, as to how you use the waterproofing sticking thingy, and the skill to measure and cut that tin. You are just on Amazing Human being Shawn. To all Subscribers and lovers of Shawn's video's wear headphones, you can hear the tree's rustling, "cali" panting, the bird's, mozzies (yucky) Truly Amazing. Thank you Shawn. "Home is where the heart is, and your home is filled with love from your beautiful wife, daughter's, and beautiful "cali" It's not Quantity it's Quality in life, when it's our time to go home you can't take it with you, you only take the Love with you. Another brilliant video. Thank you Shawn. Kindest thoughts to you and your family and "cali" from Australia.

I appreciate your reflections about where you are versus where you could be. I grew up in eastern Washington but now live in middle Tennessee (Nashville). I always have a far-off longing to get back to that part of the country (like a salmon to it's spawning ground), but I have to be careful not to dream too much of "somewhere else" because it prevents me from fully enjoying to beauty and opportunities where I AM. Anyway, your thoughts just resonated with me, so thanks for sharing.

Your comments on loving your home reminded me of a Wendell Berry poem called "Stay Home". I will wait here in the fields to see how well the rain brings on the grass. In the labor of the fields longer than a man’s life I am at home. Don’t come with me. You stay home too. I will be standing in the woods where the old trees move only with the wind and then with gravity. In the stillness of the trees I am at home. Don’t come with me. You stay home too. -Wendell Berry I'm not saying that it's not great to visit other places just like you did, but valuing one's own home and place has its own beauty too. Great reminder.

As I watched you work the membrane & metal on the roof I thought about each action & move you made. I built a small 480 square foot cabin twenty years ago. Now I have added porches on three sides. I have built several sheds & storage buildings. The satisfaction of doing it alone is good. I knew exactly when you wished for a helper. I am a carpenter's son who became an electrician & then a construction consultant. Retired now I have become a carpenter again. I work alone as you do. Building porches & replacing fascia boards on our two-story city house this summer. My wife thinks it funny that I watch other people do what I do as entertainment. Thanks for both of your channels, they motivate me to keep doing my projects in my mid-sixties.

Hi Shawn, it’s good seeing you back on your channel sounds like you had a great time on your vacation to Alaska , your homestead looks like a rest home and a lovely place to come home to. I’m still recovering from my broken ,and making a good steady recovery my life has changed but it’s up to us all to change with times and surrounding of our own lives. Your own life’s journey has been a great inspiration to myself , I’m having a log cabin put at the end of our land somewhere to relax and to do my art workings , due to my injury I’m now going to retire from the health service . I’ve done done my bit in life looking after people for the past 38 years , ive also found your channel some place that I can retreat to when in need of pace and wanting to be on my own with nature. See you on your next video , all the best , Graham.

@@MySelfReliance My grandfather built the almost exact same thing you did with the porch on the side. His was screened in with a breakfast table and a hammock. On the right side he built their bedroom. (he built a really neat cedar bed frame for it too). And once the extensions were done, he built a very long back porch to hang all of his tools, and cleared the area for a view to his pond. His root cellar was at the end of a long wooden walkway about 20 yards away from the cabin. Watching you build this porch really reminded me of him!

As exciting as it is to travel and see new vistas, there is no place like home! So happy you were able to experience Alaska. Every time I travel afar, I return home with renewed energy and a list of things I want to accomplish.

Welcome home! Obviously you had an awesome trip. The roof...sure will miss that beautiful wooden roof but with the new porch roof the ice&water shield and metal roof is definitely the best option. Btw...I’ve seen roofs loose every shingle in a hurricane and the ice&water shield stayed on and kept the house interior bone-dry through numerous tropical downpours until re-shingling was completed....so great stuff, you’ll be happy with the result Shawn.

Couldn't agree more about the Grandeur of Alaska/Yukon/BC vs Canadian Shield.. The latter you can truly walk and feel complete immersion in natural environment

I really liked how you talked about the way we interact with our immediate surroundings, and how they have a greater impact on our daily lives than larger landmarks which are found in isolation. That's an interesting perspective to keep in mind, particularly when considering where one might like to retire (as an example).

Hi James, You have accomplished so much where you are and have so much more to do, we always see more and different places and only see the beauty and not the obstacles that would be needed to be overcome to live there. It is great that you can see all the potential of the cabin area and be comfortable where you are.
