Installing a Mini-Split By Myself ― The Stand and Compressor Unit

In this video, I install a home made mini-split stand that I made on our other channel, Trap Door Woodworks: • Making a Treated Mini ... , drill a hole through the drywall to expose the pass-thru pipe that was built-into the wall when the addition was first built, figure the interior bracket location and install, and finally I install the outdoor compressor unit to the stand installed earlier (three days to be exact).
I had hoped to install the interior unit as well in this video, but the video was getting too long and I like to show my work instead of just showing results. The next video will show the mounting of that interior unit, all of the wiring, the running of the refrigerant lines, the installation of the AC disconnect switch, and finally the pump-down of the lines and release of the refrigerant.

In this video I install the stand and the outdoor compressor unit on top of it once the concrete dries. Unfortunately the unit I am installing came without refrigerant so there will be a third video showing how to charge a unit with refrigerant! My dad's favorite word was plumb. We have 3 Mitubishi min splits in the house, pretty cool there is an outside unit. Great job on installing this. I liked the sped up portion of you digging the holes. YT gave me some ads on mini splits....LOL

Thanks Dave. My pop was actually an HVAC guy back in the 60's. They just called them "furnace guys" back then a very few people had air conditioning yet. 😮 We will have three of these on the house as well, and two on the woodshop (one for the office). They are a very convenient way to add a little coolness where it's needed!

Thanks Patty! It saves at least $1,600.00 - twice that easily in the city -so it will be a lot more common for people to install these themselves with the economy the way it is!

I've almost did this but chickened out. You're right about the installation fee. I paid twice what the unit costed for the install!!!

Sorry to hear that Robert! When we installed our first unit, we ran into the same problem. Installation was not even an option - we did not have the money to pay for it! So I followed the instructions, and it all worked out in the end. That unit was running for about six years, and we will re-install it at some point soon after recharging it.

I nearly forgot about the breezeway! You certainly do not have alack of projects! My parents put a minisplit in their lake house after having no a/c for over 30 years. Other than a bedroom eindow unit. Wow, what a difference! How many units are you installing? Looks like you had a stack of them in the workshop cleanup video.

Thanks Drew! Mini split's are a very nice solution for places where you don't have ductwork - like a cottage, addition, or a garage/shop. We will be install two more units in the new shop, and likely another unit in the barn/tiny house. This particular unit has some problems that will be shown in a future video, but that rarely happens. Stay tuned for that... 😊

My friend has one of these minisplits and it makes no sound whatsoever! I have a window unit, and try not to run it because it's so loud ☹

I agree! If you mount the outdoor unit on a stand, the units are VERY silent! If you put these on the wall brackets they do make more noise, but even that is pretty damn quiet!

After paying an HVAC guy 350 bucks to top off my AC system. I immediately did the research and discovered it's not hard at all to do yourself. Just have to buy a few tools and watch some instructional videos.

Thanks Jeffry! I believe the tools were a little over $200.00 (links in the pinned comment above) and we will be using them many times! I couldn't believe they wanted twice what the unit costed even with me providing the stand an pre-drilling the hole through the wall! It's nice having a vacuum pump as well. I can also use that for veneering on my woodworking channel 😊 @Trap Door Woodworks
