Excellent video. I did this 3 years ago on my Mac mini that only had a stock hdd, no Fusion Drive. This is still one of the only sources that shows that you can indeed have two drives on the 2014 Mac mini. Most places still state it is not possible. Mine is still running great. It brought to life my painfully slow Mac mini.

Nice video, I now consider 2014 Minis a lot more, espcially the 8Gb+ ram models... So far I had my eyes (for friends, or my parents) only on the same model I own: the 2012 with 2 SATA option and upgradable RAM !

Btw, MacTracker info states that the PCIe slot is a max. x2 , so that's why only 750 MB transfer speeds. In my mac Pro 4,1->5,1 I put a PCIe x4 card in it for the NVME, so transfer speeds are around 1,5 GB/sec.

I forgot to mention that my boot time from when I git the line on the screen indicating OS loading to the log in screen is only 12 seconds. From pushing the on switch to login screen is about 23 seconds. I have the original 512 Gbyte Mac SSD. Blackmagic Speed Test reports 700 write speed 720 read speed. I think there is a point where faster drives don't necessarily mean faster computer speed. Can you really tell the difference if it takes 1.5 seconds of outlook to load vs 1.2 seconds?

There is only two PCIe lanes for the M2 drive. The four USB ports taking the other two lanes, the chipset only support four PCIe lanes.

The Mac Mini only has two pcie lines. Your drive has 4 lines. If you were using it in a mac book pro it would be much faster. Also, I had the same heat problems with my 3.0 Ghz I7 Mac mini 2014. I purchased Mac Fan Control Pro. It lets you pick the sensor to control with. I'm using the CPU PECI sensor. I set a range of 110 F to 190 F this ramps the fan from 1800 rpm to 4800 rpm. Running the two core test I get a max temp of about 160 F with the fan at just under 3599 rpm. I use Intel power gadget to monitor power and temps. It reports about 71 C. Both Cores are running 3.35 Ghz. Package power is just under 19 watts and core power is just undeer 15 watts.

i found a lot of torx security scews have very weak pins for security, usually all thats needed is a slotted driver that fits between the pin and the lobes, then pry or twist and the center pin breaks off with almost no force, making it a normal torx head. YMMV but at least torx heads dont strip like cross/phillips heads which when that happens on small screw it becomes even more of a pain

Greg, I really enjoyed watching this. I plan to get a Mac Mini as a media PC one day. And either the 2012 or 2014 models would do well for that. But you keep giving me the idea of using it as a streaming machine. When the day comes that I need to do so one of these little machines will serve a dual purpose. (:

hey did you do this? im deciding about install a SSD SATA III or an adapter+ SSD NVMe (just to keep budget low) but idk which one to use. One thing is that i heard that some ppl have issues with the adapter.. and i believe the difference is somenthing like SATA III = 510/500 Read/Write vs NVMe = 750/700 Read/Write so idk what to do xd!

Question; that Mini obviously had had the Fusion Drive at some point in time as it the PCIe connector to Apple's proprietary SSD stick was installed. Why not just using an adapter from that one to your Sabrent M.2 NVME drive? And just as Apple's PCIe ribbon cable is held in place by the small metal clip and two screw, one needs to do something similar with the NVME adaptor, as to not only rely on the adhesive tape. One way is to place an appropriate material between the connector and the bottom cover. Just to ensure the adapter truly firmly stays in place.

I'm wanting to do this so I don't have to use the Apple proprietary PCIe SSDs. Where did you get the drive adapter? Update: I think I found a version of it on Amazon (Nice long title of course): PCI-E x4 x2 M.2 NGFF M-Key NVME AHCI SSD Converter Card Adapter Raiser for 2014 MacBook Mini A1347 MEGEN2 MEGEM2 MEGEQ2 NVME SSD Quick question: Is it possible that while installing this, I could take out the old SATA hard drive and run strictly on the PCIe SSD? I'm using my Mac Mini as a Chromium OS desktop now. It's running very well and much better than it did with Mac OS X. I don't see why not if I can select to boot the PCIe SSD correct?

Could you elaborate on what needs to be 'flashed' ? Do you mean a firmware update that is included with High Sierra ? Also, it isn't really nessecary to use dosdude1's mojave install patcher, because the mac mini 2014 natively supports it. Or do you just use that because you are lazy and let that little app create the install drive ? I do as well !

Yes, but you'll need a similar adapter as shown in the video. You have two options, the VERY expensive OWC adapter, or the inexpensive Sintech adapter sold at Amazon. Both produce the same results, it's just a matter or how clean and stock you want your final installation to be. eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYMM14SA/ www.amazon.com/Sintech-NGFF-NVMe-Upgrade-A1347/dp/B07Q5FBNVG

After a the security update in 10/22 these now throw a kernel panic shutting the computer down when sleeping. Its a PITA. I did this MOD and benefitted from over a year of the best kept secret "Late 2014 16 GB i7 Mac Mini with a 1 TB SSD fused to the stock 1 TB HDD w/ the superior Iris Pro over the HD 4000 GPU" I hear the kernel panics have spread to the MacBook upgrades using these adapters allowing regular M key SSD's to connect to Apple proprietary blades:( Any idea how to fix this? Apple is going to have to fix it and why would they? Do you have a workaround? Thank you so much!!

I’ve installed an SSD into my 2012 Mac mini and upgraded the RAM for performance. The SSD crashed so I then had to go back to my stock Hard Drive. I then decided to fusion drive the SSD with the stock Hard Drive so I get about 3/4 the performance of the SSD and all the storage with the stock HD. Is it possible to upgrade the Mac mini CPU and graphics card? Also I’m terrible at soldering.

I keep on searching why does my 2014 Mac Mini disk speedtest slow even Im using Nvme SSD on it, Glad that i Watched this and we have the same speed. I bought Kingston 512gb NVME SSD and before putting it on my mac, I tried it first on my laptop because I have dual NVME ssd on my laptop, and I'm getting the Disk speed of 2100MBps of Read Speed and 1900MBps of Write speed. Which is in my Mind an overkill btw for the 2014 mac mini. Then after putting the NVME SSD Im shocked because Im only getting a disk speed of 700MBps Read and Write. I tried to reorder another NVME Adapter and Im still getting the same speed of 700MBps. So maybe Mac is not an advances after all in terms of upgradability. They limit it.

First off if you noticed, I never put thermal paste back on it because I found that out later. I had never taken one apart before, and I hadn’t really done the research other than researching how to take it apart. Second off it actually is NVMe it’s just like a one lane version. So it still has really crappy bandwidth. It’s not SATA 3 and the bandwidth is still faster than SATA 3 it’s about 100+MB/s faster than SATA 3 in my testing it’s just limited by the PCIe lanes. I left the video is directly geared towards educational reasons. It’s always assumed that I don’t have a clue what I’m talking about. I just have a general idea usually I’m not spreading misinformation. anytime I release an educational video if there is a mistake in it. I either figure out a way to fix it after it’s been uploaded or I take it down and re-upload it and lose all the views because I’m a stickler for accuracy. This wasn’t intended to be an educational video. It was a look what I can do with this thing and what you can do with it also video.
