That’s not a preheat, its a fuel shut off solenoid. The solenoid opens a plunger when the coil gets power and closes it when it loses power. The plunger opens and closes the fuel passage to the main jet. The purpose is to eliminate “dieseling” or “run on” when the engine is shut down hot. All the old air cooled VW had them. When you install a new or dry carb, use a small squirt bottle full of gas to pour fuel down the float vent tube in the carb throat. It will backfill the float chamber and you can prime the accelerator pump and get get it to start without cranking the hell out of it to pump gas up to the float chamber. Nice carb. The Weber Red Lines are great!

Thanks for recording and sharing this. I have a 1968 1602 and this was helpful to know what to do to remove the carb 👍🙂

I didn’t think we were ever going to see you get your hands dirty again. It’s good to see you turn a wrench for a change.

Cool video Nathan. It's gonna be fun watching you restore this thing. Hope you don't run into any trouble with this car. See you next video.

There's darn few 1602s around, but there are quite a few later BMWs with the M10 engine, so your videos about this car are certainly relevant.

A little love with an emery cloth, some lube, and just a bit of force should seat that air filter housing. I enjoy seeing this work, even if I don't own one & likely never will. Unique & entertaining.

Get the 20k , I had a few 1600's and great car back then. Look at the rare Turbo 2002 and copy it. Or get a 1973 2002tii round tailights.and put new springs, shocks, shoes, boots. Add a tweak or two to the fuel injection and your doing 60mph in 5 flat. Daily driver never problems, unlike so many others. Many were raced on weekends. Thanks for the work and interest in the brand .

petepenn1 I installed L-Jet from an 1985 318i on my 1970 1602 which has an upgraded 2.0 liter engine. Best modification for drive ability and fuel consumption. I’ve had my car for 49 years. It has flared fenders with 15X7 BBS wheels wearing Toyo Proxes R1R tires and appropriate suspension mods. The brakes have been upgraded along with the essential 5 speed conversion. I can’t imagine any car that is more fun to drive. Hope you still have one.

The Weber was a very worthy upgrade on my '74 2002 that I acquired back in 1982. Drove the wheels off that car. Was a very classy car and very reliable. Black with beige interior with factory AC. Sold it in 1987, but many good memories.

Refreshing to watch these vids Nathan. Think the old girl may be worth a little more than you think as a 50 year old car with no rust would be near impossible to find. Please try and keep it original as you can

Excellent reminds me of the the days when all cars had carburettors except for a few. That solinoid is an anti dieseling shut off. For the younger generation dieseling is the engine continuing to run after the ignition is turned off. It was common on higher performance cars You certainly did the right thing fitting that carburetor. The old carburetors do not like modern fuel. Even still carburettor cars are very fussy about the choke usage when cold with the modern petrols. If you allow it to missfire you run the risk of fowling the plugs. I used to keep my hands on the choke to adjust it to keep the engine running smoothly on a cold start. The other factor to worry about was the intake air temperature. Most cars had a setting on the air cleaner for summer and winter. In winter mode it too heat from the exhaust manifold. More upmarket cars usually had an automatic heat system some even had a separate control on the dash. If you got this wrong the car would keep stalling out due to iceing. Or the fuel would boil in summer

I'd just make a quality ad for it with a higher price and wait for someone who values a rust-free starting point. It's always great to have time on your side if you're selling something, you can always lower the price if you need quick cash.

Nice car, by all means sell it as you get it in good running order but don't give it away too cheap ! Some people like to fix the mechanicals (i.e. you ) others are going to want to restore the finish on what, as you say, is a rare and rust free example of a very significant car for BMW.

I realize this video is a couple years old. The collar for the air cleaner on the new carb is a press fit. It will pull off. I have the same carb on a V-4 ford in my snowcat. I left the carb out the first night and it shrunk enough to pull that adaptor collar off. 14:02

@@kfd629 dude! you're my hero, if i can get up to my shop i was gonna do some work on mine today too! i've got the old zenith carb and i've got a real bad hesy when i punch the throttle (not that you really need to punch the throttle, but you know what i mean) i've rebuilt the zenith but... i'm not good enough to do throttle rod bushings and it's got so much play i think i'm pulling vacuum there. anyway blah blah blah - got the carb from Dan in salt lake but first i'm gonna adjust the valves while everything is running decent now and then i will attack the carb. i have so many questions to a fellow imp owner. hey, if i reply back with my email would you mind giving me a shout & if you're cool i'll come back in here and edit it out. i'm in washington state. thx heaps bud:)
