In today's video, I'll be swapping over the digital instrument cluster from my parts truck. It was an option for 1989-1993/1994 (first gen) GM S-platform trucks and SUVs. It's a pretty invasive swap that involves a lot of wiring, but the results are well worth it if you already have a digi-cluster that's in good shape. Plus, you get the added 80s vibe! A couple benefits of the swap is getting a tachometer and, in my opinion, more accurate gauge readouts. I hope you all enjoy the video! If anyone is curious as to the instructions I used in this video, check out the link below!

Over the next few months, I'll be introducing a lot more project content to the channel, in addition to my normal reviews! The 240SX will be picking up soon (engine swap), along with a few other things I have in the works! For this series, I'm excited to announce a new partnership between Saabkyle04 and O'Reilly Auto Parts (www.oreillyauto.com/) Together, we'll be bringing the Jimmy back to its former glory! I'll be focusing on a lot of DIY content to fix what's broken, while upgrading key components. My goal is to get this thing to a point that it could be a reliable daily driver. There's a ton of things that need to be done, so expect a lot of cool content with this one. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you all enjoy! I'm really excited about these projects. They're a great way for me to interact with you all more and us all to have fun together!

It's funny how we've come full circle. There was a digital cluster craze in the 80s and 90s, but then they disappeared for 20 years. Now it's the new hot thing, especially with VW and Audi products.

GREAT work Kyle. I remember when I swapped in a cluster from a Paseo to my Tercel, and then upgraded it to have a 140 MPH speedo (that the Tercel would, of course, never see, lol). But these are the things we do as car people to make our rides ours, and enjoy them more.

Great video! A little tip on removing the HVAC controls I found from removing mine so many times. *1.)* Use a plastic pry tool to pop off the little black "nubs" on the control levers. *2.)* Remove the two lower screws holding the panel in place. *3.)* Unplug the top connector for the fan speed control lever. *4.)* Remove the 2 light bulb twist sockets on the right side. *5.)* Remove the two .25" silver screws on the left side. This will now allow you to just remove the "face" of the HVAC controls leaving all the other parts hooked up and inside the dash. You just need to gently push them out of the way when removing the gauge cluster hood/surround. This way of doing it has saved me many headaches and a ton of time over the course of removing this part several times on my restoration.

I’m so happy you did the swap! And for anyone wondering, 1989 was when the square body S10/Blazer went to electronic speedometer so 86-88 people are out of luck on the swap unless you want to change the whole tail shaft housing and add additional wiring etc. Not easy.

My dad had an 80's Jimmy with this Digital Cluster! Ohhh man this brings back memories! His was defective somehow, I think the polarizing film meant to make the cluster's lights visible to the human eye kept getting loose and the dash would just stay black. He'd hit it a coffee mug to get it to work for a while. The thing was a deathtrap, but I'm still fond of it, I'm pretty sure it's what sparked my love for these clusters. Keep up the good work, Kyle!

My dad had a 93 with the same cluster. Always thought it was the coolest thing ever. They were all the rage in '93. I remember we looked at 10 or so of them before buying his, and they all had that cluster. You're really lucky yours works as well as it does. Most had issues early in their life. Typically the amber and red spots on the tach were the first to go. Nicely swapped in!

Very nicely done my friend! I’ve personally not been as big of a fan of the factory 86-94 digital clusters, mainly because of their known problems of burning out, etc. But now my brother has a 1991 GMC Jimmy 2 door 4wd with a factory digital cluster in it, and from watching this video, I am getting to appreciate it more now lol. My 1991 4 door 4wd Jimmy has an analog cluster, actually it has a cluster from a 1993 S10 pickup, because the factory cluster went bad. But my speedometer quit working, even with a new vehicle speed sensor, so I still need to diagnose and fix that. But to clarify on when you talked about the factory tachometer and speedometer cable vs electronic, the tach (as far as I know) was only available in 1988 and 1989 in fairly limited numbers. I found one in a 1988 S15 Jimmy and put it in my 1988 S10 pickup. And the speedometer was cable driven from 1982-1988, and electronic from 1989-up. Great video man!

That turned out absolutely awesome, and the digital cluster really compliments the overall vintage 1980's feel of that truck. I have a question - on the original analog cluster harness that its in your 1993, couldn't you have simply removed each wire from the actual plastic plug connector, and snap in the new wires into the new digital cluster connector, or are both connectors shaped differently?

Great job Kyle! I just installed a Bluetooth kit in my brothers 2006 Honda Pilot this past weekend. I actually had Best Buy do the installation but apparently they forgot to remove a wire on one of the connectors because his car has XM. So I had to go back in and correct that and now it works like it should without any interference with the XM radio. As for the mileage on your gauge cluster you can move the odometer forward but NOT backwards. Digital ones may or may not allow you to do that I’m not sure. I believe that my buddy Robert Spinner aka. RobertDIY has a video on this procedure

Only thing i don't know is where to connect the constant power i get from the cig lighter, but i haven't yet looked at the pin layouts. Hopefully the one you're swapping in is in good shape, because those things are NOTORIOUS for screens going blank. On my old Blazer, the odometer was out for a while, and when the speedometer went out I got it fixed. The speedo went again and I found a cluster online that was within an oil change of the mileage on mine, so I swapped it in. The speedo then went out AGAIN on that one, so I just used a gps unit for the last 3-4 years I had it.

Nice upgrade, glad to see it all working! Shame about the mileage, but imo its better to have an odometer read higher than the actual mileage, rather than the actual mileage be higher than what the odometer reads. On an unrelated note, if you happened across another of these digital gauges, or even the analogue tach cluster in a junkyard, it would be a cool addition to that little 93 S10 of yours. I think that 89 Blazer you shot a video of a good while back had one of those gauge clusters.

I wish you hadn't cut up the dash! From the point you were at, it's not much more work to pull the entire dash (I've done it, to replace a heater core)... or you could just loosen the bolts and pull it forward a couple inches to give you some room to work. Still, the end result was very nice! Good thinking making an adapter harness so you can swap back to the analog cluster if needed. Also, FYI those trim panel screws are Pozidrive, not Phillips (you can tell by the fine X halfway between the main cross). You can use a Phillips driver like you did, but it slips out rather easily. With a PZ2 bit it works much better!

Nice video as always. Hope you're doing well, Kyle. Digital cluster looks so cool! *EDIT: Amazing to see how simple these vehicles are. I mean, a cable conecting the shifter? I like simple stuff, so heck yes. Makes maintaining a lot easier.

This cluster has it's old soul, but it's been given a new, improved, cleaner (and actually usable) body!

Bye old cluster! Hello digital! I can't believe this turned out so well! Also, can you do a night ride with that brand new cluster?

I thought it was plug and like like my Oldsmobiles. This was interesting and I am glad to see you took on the challenge. You did it. I know how it feels to get the victory. The clusters can be reprogrammed. You have to find someone to do that. I had it done on a Ninety Eight. On my Toronado when it plugged in, the mileage matched my car because of where the information was stored. Excellent job and efforts on your part Kyle!

These square bodies always remind me of the early 90’s Chrysler Town & County that my Mom had, and her Aunt’s early 90’s Dodge Caravan, which is the same vehicle. Good vehicles for their time.

I've always loved the design of the early digital clusters, I always thought they gave off a "Tron" vibe.
