Thank you, thank you, thank you! this video is perfect for those of us who ignore Suzuki's warning not to do the install as a DYI. My closest boat service/dealer is a 4 hour drive. A couple of items that I would love to see you cover, lower unit oil and final adjustments of the shift and throttle cables at the engine. I am new to boat engines and the info Suzuki sends is useless for service work and install. I just don't want to mess anything up.I wish I had seen this before I ordered whole new deck furniture from Pontoon Stuff, that 5% would have been nice, Cheers!

I can't imagine Suzuki would sell them by the thousands to OnlineOutboards . com if they were worried about DIY folks installing them. Hopefully a video like this will prevent any silly goof-ups from folks at home too. At the motor I like to have a little wiggle room of the shift arm on the engine both directions as opposed to being pinned to the back or forward of neutral. And for throttle I like it relaxed, but without a doubt put in lowest idle possible. Maybe shoot an email or call over to Pontoon Stuff to see if they'll help you out (assuming it wasn't too too long ago). Worst case, it'll let them know that my channel is helping their customers out with their projects and I would certainly appreciate that BIG TIME! I always love to strengthen my relationship with the companies I work with.

@@tomspontoons Thank you for your response, those hints helped. I just bought the motor and restoration pieces a month ago. The folks at Pontoon Stuff and Outboard Direct were great. Thanks to your help I'll be firing up the engine for the first time in a just a bit. The Suzuki manual actually has in their "warning statements" at every step, "Do not attempt DYI!" and the instruction manual has no initial set up info only basic service. I guess it's the only complaint I have, but the motor is fantastic. I am just grateful you spent the time to video the setup. Cheers!

This was a very big help in installing my new 25hp Suzuki :) I saw that there are two diagrams for the swing arm steering installation. You went with the DF20/25 diagram. The diagram for the DF25A/30A which is mounted on top of the motor steering plate was problem free to install. Also I used a 31/64" drill bit for snug holes through the transom, with marine silicone to make them water tight. You really saved me lots of problems with my install! Many thanks for a great video!

@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 3 ай бұрын
Tohatsu makes a great outboard too! I think that in general the best bet is to use a 25 or 30 hp outboard on a pontoon for slow cruising primarily. If you're always running it wide open throttle it's not going to move you any faster than 3/4 throttle, but the wear and tear on the engine is much higher. Use wide open if you need to escape a rain storm, but otherwise take it easy on the throttle as it can only push a non-planing hull like a pontoon so fast!!

On a pontoon the extra 5 hp at the top end won’t change anything for you. The engine block being the same means the low end torque and mid range power will be identical. You only get the extra few Hp at absolute wide open. Save the money and buy the 25 hp….and don’t try to upgrade it with aftermarket kits because it’ll void warranty.

just bought the same motor...curious what all those extra plugs are for and how to install analog gauges (tachometer) to the engine harness
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 ай бұрын
You'd want to reach out to a local Suzuki dealer for a gauge harness. One of the plugs should have your power, ground, and tach sending wire. According to my chart, for Suzuki wiring: Gray is key on power, tach sending wire is yellow, and ground should be black. Find the plug with those colored wires and you should be good. Otherwise look into a gauge harness that would plug into a lead on the ignition harness and that should give you the wires you need for wiring in a tach.

I ended up bundling up a whole bunch of the extra wires on top of the pontoon under the deck and not using them. If I remember right, the trim and tilt is tied into the main plug. That sounds like a cool project. Unfortunately I've never tackled a dual helm situation, and I haven't really looked deeply into how they're set up. They're extremely rare up here in Michigan so I just haven't been exposed to them. I'm not sure what's possible with smaller HP motors. I think with hydraulic steering and fly by wire controls it's much simpler. I'm not surprised that there's a way to do it that's very expensive as it's such a unique setup with smaller hp outboards. Sorry I can't be of more help. I would reach out to the outboard brand you're working with to see if their engineers can help guide you. Best of luck with the project!

I've installed a 9.9 hp on a 24' pontoon in the past and they love it. It's on a small lake and they just use it to do laps or putts out to the middle to swim. A 40 hp will give you enough torque and power to maneuver at the dock and trailer, but certainly won't light up the speed records. Probably 10-12 mph with a full load.

I believe on that motor the white cable comes in the rigging box coiled up in a bag. @tomspontoons 18 күн бұрын
What kind of boat is it on? You could get a small engine tachometer than hooks to a spark plug wire and gives you your RPMs at wide open. I believe that motor should be turning close to 6,000 if it's one of the newer four strokes. If you're overloaded or under propped then it might not be able to run out to the optimal RPM range which would lose that top end HP for you.
@smurphy1976

@@smurphy1976you should see some improvement with the 10” pitch, but that’ll likely only bring your WOT rpm up to 5400-5500 at best. We often run 9” pitch props for 14-16’ Jon boats I used to rig them on.
@smurphy1976
@smurphy1976 6 күн бұрын
@@tomspontoons Ended up getting a mile per hour faster and planes in about half the time. With the RPM gauge it's showing around 6200 at WOT. Is that ok or am I revving the engine too far? I was thinking that maybe the gauge is off a bit.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 күн бұрын
@@smurphy1976that sounds about right for a performance increase in terms of planing speed/time. 6200 won’t hurt it, but I wouldn’t run it there all the time. Use that extra torque to pop on plane quick, then back off a little down to 5200 to cruise. You’ll love the extra punch when you get more weight in the boat, and then your RPMs will drop from 6200 at wide open due to the increased load.

You say that the engine "is ready for fuel and running" but you didn't show where the power lines out of the control box go. There's a bunch of cables there and at least one of them needs to go to power for the ignition, right?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Жыл бұрын
The battery cables at the motor are what will power the starter and start the engine. The ignition harness plugs into the control box to give signal to the starter solenoid to fire the starter to start the engine. There are several other leads including the trim/tilt wires and wires for a potential gauge harness. The alarms are built into the ignition harness and horn is at the key switch which is helpful because most folks running a 25 hp on their pontoon aren’t so much concerned with gauges. It’s nice to be able to wire them in if need be though!

Would you say that a 25 or 30 horse is sufficient for an 18 foot pontoon? Would there be additional wear and tear due on the motor to it’s smaller size?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 10 ай бұрын
Absolutely 100% sufficient! We have installed 9.9 and 20 hp motors on 18' boats...and even a 9.9 hp high thrust on a 24 pontoon. You're typically going to want that size motor because you know you're going to just be puttsing around the lake just above idle. It'll never go very fast so there's no need to push the engine hard all the time. Just puttsing around the lake with a 25 hp will add no more wear and tear than puttsing around with a 60hp. Most 25 hp and 30 hp outboards are identical (literally just tuned slightly different at the computer) to where there would be no benefit to going to a 30 hp over a 25 hp on a pontoon. The 25 hp is a sweet spot because it's usually a 3 cylinder, much smoother, and much quieter than the twin cylinder 20 hp and under options. Hope this helps!

What torque spec do you need to tighten the transom mounting bolts to? Can't seem to find a specification for my DF30?

That’s a great question. In all my years working in the marina I never saw a mechanic use a torque wrench when mounting a motor. They’d always run them tight with an impact and then finish by hand tightening.

Did the motor come with the cable ends?

Yes, they should be with the motor and with the control box.

Where do you guys buy your motors from? I want to rig my boat myself. Most local places want to include rigging in the price.

I purchase motors through a local marina (I used to work there) so they know that I am capable of installing. A lot of dealers want to protect themselves by installing it professionally for warranty sake...but they could sell you the motor, let you install it, and then you could pay them (usually $100-$150) to do a pre-delivery inspection to make sure you installed it correctly. Plus I'm sure they like the labor rate for installation when they do the work!! This 25 hp Suzuki can actually be purchased at Online Outboards and they'll ship it to your house. They do most brands up to 30 hp.

Why not HDPE instead of plywood?

I don’t see why a high density plastic wouldn’t work on a transom. We just replicate what we’ve seen and know works when working on customers’ boats.

I've done both HDPE and Marine grade plywood. Advantages to both, but if you want the least amount of vibration and noise transferring to the boat, wood is best.

@@J.W.W. Good to know! The outboard manufacturers have moved to softer and softer mounts (especially in the smaller outboards) to reduce vibration in the twin and three cylinder motors. Helps a lot!

The three cylinder Suzuki versus the less expensive Tohatsu 20 hp two cylinder is why I spent the money on the Suzuki, hoping it’s smoother and quieter by getting more engine.
