I've never installed with just dope and no teflon. Saves a lot of time I'll give this a shot

See you never did it the way i do. I only reckoned once with the yellow. Lately with the blue and black Teflon I’m seeing more Teflon used. I never have leaks on my gas fittings with only dope. Or I would Teflon. With water pipe I Teflon and tape.

In my area we always had to use galvanized schedule 40 pipe for all outdoor gas lines to prevent pipe from rusting.
@howtohvac3234

In my area we use black steel pipe and paint. Not sure why in NJ galvanized is uncommon. Especially since NJ gets a lot of snow. Yet I have seen lots of rusty gas pipe. Only time I seen black pipe used for gas rot through was penetrating through a cement wall. Off the meter. Those pipes were rotted bad. Flaming apart. Usually I only see black pipe rot away on steam systems.

I NEVER use galvanized pipe to run gas line. Galvanized pipe has a tendency to flake. I ALWAYS run black pipe, and paint it when I'm finished.
@elmono3939
@elmono3939 Жыл бұрын
Wrong. No galvanized. You use black steel pipe and fittings. Galvanized coating will flake off and clog the orifice. You paint the pipe, instead

@@elmono3939 I had a retired plumber from Ca Bay Area call me out using black pipe on his job, he said it was never allowed in the Bay Area, they were made to use galvanized for corrosion. Myself I do not care either way, I have never ever seen galvanized flake anything, I think it is an old wives tale. Not found in any code for sure.
@elmono3939
@elmono3939 10 ай бұрын
@@nspro931: Definitely not a old wives tale. It is also not a Code, but manufacturer's recommendation. With that said, I also understand we all are used to different materials and installation methods - and we all claim "our method is the proper one." So be it. Checked with Inspector's network web site, and this is what they had to say regarding this topic: "...You do not want to use galvanized pipe for gas because of the galvanized coating. Over time pieces of the galvanized steel will flake off and clog your gas regulators and burner units. Never mix galvanized and black iron or where they touch corrosion will be accelerated...." Amen

Manufacturer requires these due to engines moving somewhat on start. Helps protect steel gas pipe fittings vibrating loose.

@@howtohvac3234 , not really sure why New York would not be following the GAMA ( Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association) & the national gas fuel code rules on gas generator installations. You did a great job on your installation. I'm not a big fan of that type of connector used on generators. I prefer the braided vibration connectors, even if this type of connector is shipped with the generator, I refuse to use it ( it's just a glorified Appliance connector). Google/generator gas connectors/Calore Equipment & you will see what I mean. Just and FYI, some codes throughout the United States require the drip leg to be installed after the shut-off and the shut-off valve to go down to the off position ( fall to the off position, if you can visualize) but each to their own as long as the national code is followed.👍

@@boby115 their is a drip leg factory installed inside the generator. Right before gas ties into fuel solenoid. Our drip leg on outside is redundant yet for inspectors to see it.

Couple things. I'm assuming that's a generator & all generator manufactures provide their own flexible connector with specific installation instructions. I've installed & inspected many gas installs to generators & have never once seen a sediment trap on the inside of the unit. IFGC requires the sediment trap to be downstream of the shut off valve. Pipe dope is not a sealant it is a lubricant
@howtohvac3234
@howtohvac3234 3 жыл бұрын
Drip leg is factory installed inside of gender before gas solenoid. Not all units have a drip leg/ sediment trap inside. Look at the new Honeywell genders and it’s inside. I have been working on generators since 2010. Until Honeywell’s update I never seen it inside of the machine. Pipe dope is a lubercant. Yet also seals, if not why if you turn your wrench to the left to get proper angle of pipe. It will most likely leak?
@MrSprintcat
@MrSprintcat 2 жыл бұрын
It is actually a lubricant, because the the threads are pitched acts as a lubricant get the threads as deep as possible the threads actually seal not the pipe dope

I hate flex line and never trust it, as a hvac tech I always hard pipe. No matter how much testing flex pipe has. We use a commercial grade braided line that is substantially stronger and not a cheap appliance flex line when we are worried about vibration
@im2yys4u81
@im2yys4u81 2 жыл бұрын
You absolutely MUST use a flex line on a generator install. No matter what brand, or what size generator, there will always be vibration.

Did you tighten that flex with just your hand 💪?
@howtohvac3234
@howtohvac3234 2 жыл бұрын
At first I didn’t tighten with wrench. I usually like it to leak the air out when I first turn on the gas. It didn’t leak why at end I thought it would need a few cranks to start up. After the video I snugged it up more with wrench even though it sealed from hand tightening. Doesn’t take a lot of force to seal gas pipe. 7” w.c. = 1/4 PSI

I have a question, if you’re removing a section of pipe or a flex pipe and one of the pipes you don’t want to remove loosens a little. Can you just tighten up the one that moved a little and just tighten it? Or do you have to remove the pipe that moved a little and re-tape and dope it to reinstall!

I just had a question for anyone here, a recent had a very sm gas leak, and since then I have been planning to want to replace the black pipes with Proflex flak jacket CSST as a DIY, what I needed to know is can I go with thee exact same size as the black pipes that are currently in use, or do I need to go up a size when using CSST???
