In this video, we will install Home Assistant but this time we will not dedicate our entire system to Home Assistant only, but we will use a machine on which Debian 11 is installed.
However, if you install as a Container the functionality will be reduced. So why not install the supervised version which will give you all the functionality you want.

Great Video.Home assistant does not allow portainter to be installed as well. You get a system unhealthy warning. So you have to delete portainer while using the adding more addons then reinstall it. If you know a work around then that would be great.

Thank you for the feedback and additional information. I appreciate it. Regarding the issue with Portainer and Home Assistant, it's possible that there have been updates or changes to the software since the time of my video. As with any software installation, it's important to follow the latest documentation and troubleshooting steps to ensure a successful setup. That being said, I'm glad you were able to find a workaround for your specific situation. If you encounter any other issues or have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

@@powermate Excellent point. But after some short time, Portainer does not allow to install "Add-Ons" again. I still had to "kill" him. I did this: [ docker stop portainer ] : Stopped it first. [ docker rm portainer ] : Then removed it. After that everything worked. I was able to install: tasmoadmin; Mosquito broker as well as ESP Home, VLC Player, ... ...

Excellent thanks! Very well explained. I'm wanting to upgrade my current raspberry pi setup to something a bit more powerful and I am investigating the options. I have started to use the excellent NVR software called Frigate, it's really good but you are restricted to using the default Media share which will put some serious wear and tear on a ssd or sd card if you want to record video 24/7. I believe you can add an additional hard drive with this install method and make it the Media share, do you know how to do this and if so could you please do a video on it. Thanks, new subscriber 😀

Hello Shaun, Please help me to understand what you want to do. I will not suggest you to use a SD card or a SSD to record 24/7. In my view for this aplication you should use a Raspberry pi. But if you give me more information about your project, I can produce a video.

Apologies for the dumb question. You mentioned that a static ip address is advised. How might we use a static ip address? Do you need it on the computer running putty or on debian?
@sauberlab-uk
@sauberlab-uk Жыл бұрын
You have few way to set this. The best way is go at your rotter and set up static IP for that device. This because if your server is off, other machine can get the same IP address. In this way will not work as expected. I hope to makes sense.

Congratulations for the video. I installed Home assistant os on an Orange pi 5 plus running Debian Bullseye KDE plasma but after I install supervised at the next command e.g. sudo dpkg …… I get this message. dpkg dependency problem prevent configuration of homeassistant-supervised. Package systemd-supervised is not installed. dpkg: error processing package homeassistant-supervised (_ _ install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured. Please teach me how to get past this last step.

Ketil, I don`t see why will not manage upgrades. The only issue will be if Home Assistent need to have Debian 12 to run Home Assistant. Only in this way you will have issues.

If you can see that the hass.supervisor container is running in Portainer, but you are not seeing the "Supervisor" option in the Home Assistant UI, it could be that the "Supervisor" add-on is not installed or enabled in your Home Assistant installation. To check if the "Supervisor" add-on is installed and enabled, you can follow these steps: Log in to your Home Assistant installation. Click on the "Hass.io" tab on the left sidebar. If the "Supervisor" add-on is not listed on this page, it means it is not installed. To install it, click on the "Add-on Store" button at the top of the page and search for "Supervisor". Click on the "Supervisor" add-on and then click on the "Install" button. Once the "Supervisor" add-on is installed, you should see it listed on the "Hass.io" page. Click on the "Supervisor" add-on and then click on the "Start" button to enable it. After the "Supervisor" add-on is enabled, you should be able to see the "Supervisor" option in the Home Assistant UI

Hello, my Orange Pi 5 works with Debian11 + HA but a message indicates " apparmor " have not been taken into account in HA while it starts (written in green) at startup in the Linux terminal. How and where to load it...under "root" , "user" ?? Thank you so much Phil
@sauberlab-uk

Hi Phil, To enable AppArmor for Home Assistant Supervised on Debian 11, you can follow these steps: Open the terminal and login as root by running the following command: sudo su Install AppArmor using the following command: apt install apparmor Create a new AppArmor profile for Home Assistant Supervised by running the following command: aa-genprof hassio-supervisor Start Home Assistant Supervised by running the following command: systemctl start hassio-supervisor Note: If you have already started Home Assistant Supervised, you will need to restart it for the changes to take effect: systemctl restart hassio-supervisor When prompted by AppArmor, choose the "Yes" option to allow Home Assistant Supervised to access the necessary files and directories. Finally, save the new AppArmor profile by running the following command: aa-autodep hassio-supervisor This should enable AppArmor for Home Assistant Supervised on your Debian 11 system.

Hello, good video...is it possible to install HA on Orange Pi 5 ?? thank's a lot phil
@sauberlab-uk
@sauberlab-uk Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible to install Home Assistant on Orange Pi 5 running Debian 11. However, it is important to note that Home Assistant does not officially support Orange Pi 5, so you may encounter some compatibility issues. Here are the general steps you can follow to install Home Assistant Supervised on Debian 11 running on Orange Pi 5: Install Debian 11 on your Orange Pi 5. Install Docker and Docker Compose on your Orange Pi 5. Install the required dependencies for Home Assistant Supervised, which includes Git, Network Manager, and AppArmor. Clone the Home Assistant Supervised installer script from the official Home Assistant GitHub repository. Run the installer script to install Home Assistant Supervised. It is important to note that running Home Assistant Supervised on a non-supported platform can lead to issues and may require additional troubleshooting. It is also recommended to have a backup of your Home Assistant configuration before attempting any installation or upgrade.

After the installation my HA is missing supervisor. The next question is how do i restore from a backup when it won’t get it to work?
@sauberlab-uk
@sauberlab-uk Жыл бұрын
If your Home Assistant installation is missing the Supervisor, it is likely that the installation did not complete successfully. You may want to try reinstalling Home Assistant and making sure that the installation completes successfully before continuing. As for restoring from a backup, if you have previously created a backup of your Home Assistant configuration, you can restore it by following these steps: Stop the Home Assistant service. Locate the backup file and copy it to your Home Assistant configuration directory. By default, this is located at /config. Start the Home Assistant service. Open the Home Assistant web interface and go to the "Supervisor" section. Click on the "snapshots" tab and you should see your backup listed. Click on the "restore" button next to the backup you want to restore. Follow the prompts to restore the backup. Note that restoring from a backup will overwrite your existing configuration, so make sure that you have a backup of any changes you have made since the backup was created.

for some reason when i followed the instructions in the video under the system option there's a module for supervisor but it says im running an unsupported version so I'm assuming it doesn't like something and is blocking it. not too bothered atm as I'm just playing around with it. but ah well

To show as a supported version, you must install all the items at the correct revision. Anyway, your home assistant will work well, but if you have any problem, you will not be allowed to report to Home Assitant. This reason is important to keep a backup for all upgrades.

After a system reboot I can't connect to any network anymore. When I ping it says "network is unreachable". Made me frustrated.
@sauberlab-uk
@sauberlab-uk Жыл бұрын
It sounds like your network configuration may have been reset or lost during the reboot. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue: Check network cables and connections: Make sure all cables are plugged in correctly and securely. Restart networking services: Try restarting the networking service by running the following command in the terminal: sudo systemctl restart networking.service Check network interface settings: Verify that the network interface settings are configured correctly. Check the IP address, netmask, and gateway settings. Check for DHCP: If your network is configured to use DHCP to assign IP addresses, check that the DHCP server is running and responding to requests. Check firewall settings: If you have a firewall installed, make sure that it is not blocking network traffic. Check routing table: Check the routing table to ensure that it contains the correct routes. If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need to seek further assistance from a network administrator or IT professional.

If you have installed Home Assistant Supervised on Debian 11 and the page is not loading, there are a few things you can check to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Check if the Home Assistant service is running: You can use the command systemctl status home-assistant@homeassistant.service to check the status of the Home Assistant service. If it is not running, you can start it using the command systemctl start home-assistant@homeassistant.service. 2. Check if the firewall is blocking the connection: You can check if the firewall is blocking the connection to Home Assistant by temporarily disabling the firewall using the command ufw disable. If you can access Home Assistant after disabling the firewall, you can add a rule to allow incoming traffic on the Home Assistant port (8123 by default) using the command ufw allow 8123/tcp. 3. Check if Home Assistant is listening on the correct IP address and port: You can use the command netstat -tlnp to check if Home Assistant is listening on the correct IP address and port. Look for a line that shows 0.0.0.0:8123 or the IP address of your Debian 11 machine followed by :8123. 4. Check if there are any errors in the Home Assistant logs: You can check the Home Assistant logs for any errors using the command journalctl -f -u home-assistant@homeassistant.service. This will show the logs in real-time. If there are any errors, you can use them to troubleshoot the issue further. I hope these tips help you resolve the issue and get Home Assistant up and running.
