In this video, I install a Intel Core™2 Duo Processor T9900 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) into a Dell Inspiron 1545!
The Dell came with an Intel T4200.

The RAM score went up because you replaced a 2.2 GHz 800 FSB CPU with a 3.06 GHz 1066 FSB one. Upvoted because this is very useful information for anyone with one of these. I've upgraded several 1545's with T9800 and T9900.

@@TinCole I don't think it will. You have the correct socket, but the T3200 is a 667 FSB processor, and those only ran in chipsets that won't support the 1066 FSB of a T9900. I'm almost certain that the best CPU that system can take is a C2D T9500, which is still a big improvement over a Pentium T3200. You could also try the Core 2 Extreme X9000, which is compatible but runs very hot, and I don't recommend it even though it is faster than the T9500 (2.8 vs. 2.6 GHz).

Did something similar with my old trusty Dell 1545 as well. Upgraded the CPU to a T9800, installed 8 GBs of RAM at 800 MHz, and replaced the internal drive with a budget SSD. I even replaced the DVD drive with an HDD caddy, though I put it back again later as this laptop is the only thing left at home that can read DVDs on the rare occasion I need a CD/DVD reader. It feels pretty much like a modern entry level laptop now, I'm so glad I put in the effort to upgrade it. I love how they used to build laptops to last. New laptops feel so disposable to me, with most (if not all) components soldered onto the motherboard & case closed with glue. Almost impossible to repair or upgrade. I'm looking forward to buying a 'Framework Laptop' when it becomes available in my area just for the potential longevity.

I swapped out the CPU to a T9900, installed a 900p screen, replaced the DVD with a caddy with a 1 GB HDD, installed a 512 GB SSD, and this one has the ATI Radeon 4330 graphics. It's pretty close at this point to a 1545 to the max. There was a 1080p option, but I didn't see the point on a 15.4" screen.

@@johncate9541 Cool, didn't know there were higher res replacement screens for 1545. 900p sounds like a pretty useful upgrade. Is it a TN panel, or found an IPS/VA somewhere? The only problem with my laptop today is its battery, barely lasting 15 minutes (it's 12 years old so pretty much what I'd expect from li-ion cells). It's the only part I'm hesitant to replace from 3rd party generic manufacturer, don't want to wake up one morning and wonder why the house is on fire.

I upgraded my Sony Vaio VGN-FW590 series laptop to this T9900 CPU. And while it works perfectly fine the only issue is the cooling. Man that CPU get so damn hot if under heavy load. And I’ve had it nearly hit TJ MAX under heavy gaming load. I’m considering adding a copper pad on top of the CPU before I put back the heat sink.

@@TinCole HI so since I never updated my original post, I did get the copper pads for the CPU and that took the temp down to 77 C at MAX load while running Prim 95 for 30 mins. So that's much better than what I had before. I don't use it everyday anymore since it's very old, but nowadays it really starting to show it's age. I can still do light web browsing just fine. KZfaq 1080p is good but it can't do 4k. It stuggles to render the video and it will freeze. I know its the PC and not my internet because I don't have that issue with 4K videos on my desktop. Overall it's now 10 years old. And I got my money's worth out of that PC. Wish Sony still made good quality laptops. The new Vaios are in name only. They are made by some other company and the quality really went down.

Oh my god thank you for posting. I am in the middle of upgrading the exact same laptop as you and it's so hard to find ressources or any kind of info on Vaio's. Like you, I decided on going with the T9900 and my main concern was the TDP increase from 25W (Core 2 Duo P7450) to 35W but I guess that it works. You mention cooling issues during gaming and copper pad as a solution. Can you provide the model you bought to solve the heat problem ? I don't game on my laptop so I'll probably never hit max temp but better safe than sorry.

I've used my Inspiron 1545 with a Pentium T4400 and 3GB of RAM since I got it back in 2010. I'm going to buy 8GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo T9900, which are pretty cheap for being maximum spec for this PC. I've stayed with this laptop and used it because I can tolerate slow speeds, but I can make my system run quite well, so it's not much of a problem. I _love_ the design of it, which is why I've never switched computers. Investing around $180 is fine by me and I look forward to installing these components. I think this is certainly better than getting a new one, I really miss glossy, thick, heavy laptops (not the 1909s lap-crushers, but the mid-late-2000s laptops which make your lap warm, like a cat) and my Dell just _works_ well and I love it.

Price is not _too_ much of a problem for me, the more annoying part is finding laptop sized sticks, and making sure they clock as slow as 800MHz, RAM has since gotten a lot faster, and 800MHz is harder and harder to find and buy.

I definitely agree with about the design. I really love how easy it is to swap out ram, cpu and hard drive and of course clean the fans. I bought 2x4gb 800 ram for 80euro, a 480gb ssd for 60euro and plan to get a used t9900 for 50euro. I don't mind spending 200euro on this laptop, especially since my brother just gave it to me when he upgraded. I'm still running windows 7 and I'm really loving the performance of this laptop. The only downside is that you can't play the vast majority of games, but there are a few reallly good ones that can run just fine on lower graphics settings.

@@TheMisphit The Inspiron 1545 has two RAM slots; and the service manual says that they are both 800MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM slots with a maximum capacity of 4GB. That would be a total of 8GB of RAM. The way you've made your comment confuses me as if you knew that it is 4GB _per slot_ or 4GB _overall_ - I can't tell. If you thought the latter, that's not the case - fortunately. 8GB RAM is supported by most of the stock CPUs the laptop comes with (For example mine came with a Pentium T4400) along with the maximum CPU (Core 2 Duo T9900) also supporting 8GB.

Hi, I'm Silverio from Argentina. How lucky you have been, congratulations on such a descriptive video. A question: I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with A17 Bios update, with Interl Core 2 duo T7100 - 1.80 / 1M / 800 processor. As you received from Ebay a T9600 - 2.80 / 6M / 1066 processor. I did exactly what you did on that laptop; but the computer boots up and shows only the power light and nothing else, the screen goes black. I have tried various things. Relieve static by removing the battery, disconnecting the AC cable and pressing the start button for 15/20 seconds to discharge the static. I have checked the Bios and I think everything is correct. Can you tell me if this T9600 processor is compatible with the Inspiron 1525? If it is, then they put the dog in me, as we say in Argentina jahhh! and the processor does not work. Do you have any solution? I will appreciate your prompt response if you have it. What a pandemic and cordial virtual greeting. :)>

@BenDoesCoolStuff 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Silverio, thanks for your comment! I am sorry to hear that you're having issues with this. The first thing I would try, is to replace the OLD processor if you still have it, and make sure everything still works correctly. If the old processor still works in the computer (T7100), it may be a faulty new processor (T9600), or something may have been installed incorrectly. If this is the case, you can try to re-seat it and re-install. If the old processor fails, this could mean that something else happened during your installation, such as ram or wires disconnecting, or (god forbid) something shorted on the motherboard. You said you can access the bios, which is a good sign. Are you able to see processor information in the bios? This could mean that the OS needs to be replaced (you could try booting into linux from a live USB to test). Sometimes Windows acts strange when changing hardware. Try this, and let me know. I wish you luck!

I'm using a Pentium T4400 that came with it. My operating system is currently 64-bit. The maximum CPU the Inspiron 1545 can handle is a Core 2 Duo T9900. (There are two more processors which fit the socket of this laptop; but they aren't any faster and they use more power than the computer gives - so they wouldn't work anyway...) See www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Pentium_Dual-Core_Mobile/T4400.html for the list of CPUs that fit that socket. A look around on eBay will show you some kind-of sketchy, but apparently reputable sellers who sell T9900s; I found one here for ~$70.00 (USD) with the eBay item number `124398295829` (I'm not going to put in the full link because it's huge. To find a product by item number, just search the number I gave in the eBay search bar at the top) The T9900 is a 64-bit CPU too, and I believe it's ever so slightly more power efficient too; but that doesn't matter in a computer this old, my battery only lasts 50 minutes. I think there are some other more technical improvements aside from the clock speed improvement up to 3.06GHz too...

Although it does work for some light video editing, if you are working with footage shot from modern day cameras, such as 4k 60fps footage, I wouldn't recommend using it as a workstation. This computer is great, but it is still limited in what it can do (it's over 10 years old!). Another thing to be concerned about is the heat. This processor can get pretty hot, and overheating may be an issue with video editing. With that said, it does work surprisingly well with footage 720p and under. I've tested this myself. So if you can find the processor for cheap, and are working with lower-quality footage, you should be okay. If you're doing some serious work, you're definitely going to want a newer machine though!

Video editing and applications like Blender and Unity aren't going to be the best - even with max CPU, RAM and a new SSD. The problem is the GPU of the laptop, it's not replaceable. And it's not great either. It was designed for work with documents and web browsing, not games and video editing. I'd say you could still get along with doing some light editing though...

The difference is night and day. It feels like a brand new computer, besides the graphics drawbacks. Although, I should note that also have 4gb ram in this machine, and more importantly, I also have an SSD. Frankly, out of all upgrades you can do with this machine, an SSD makes the biggest difference. Invest in an SSD before the CPU. I already had an SSD, and wanted to upgrade more, so I got the CPU. This processor cost me $60 on eBay and for me, this was much better than buying a new machine. If you also have a T4200, then a T8300/T8700/T8800 would be a great upgrade, and probably worth it. If you have the version with the Celeron CPU, it's useless. The only way to use it now is to replace it with a Core 2 Duo. If you have a C2D and it still runs poorly, there's something else wrong, probably with Windows itself.

I don't believe there are any Core 2 Duo T9900s on Amazon. eBay will be your only option. Anyway, to buy off of eBay - all I believe you need is a credit/debit card or PayPal, it's not bad. You are on the right track for upgrading your Inspiron like I am. With maximum RAM (8GB) and a T9900 (3.06 GHz), it'll be up to par with some modern-day computers. The only problem with upgrading the 1545 is that the GPU can't be upgraded; so you're stuck at that, which will make modern-day games and GPU-intensive programs - like Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, and basically all video editors - all very hard and slow to use.

Hey man. I know this is an old video, and probably wont even get a reply. I was wondering, do you remember what was your motherboard Chipset? I would also like to upgrade my laptop processor. - With "CPU-Z" i get Intel GM45/GM47 (Southbridge: 82801IM (ICH9-M)), which would allows me to install T9900 too. - With "EVEREST" i get Intel GM45 (Cantiga-GM) with max FSB800, which sets me back at only T9500. - With "HWiNFO64" and "SiSoftware Sandra Lite" it only tells Intel GM45 (Cantiga-GM), again T9900... LOL

@BenDoesCoolStuff 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I downloaded both cpu-z and everest on my machine, hopefully this data helps. CPU-Z gives the exact same as you: GM45/GM47 Southbridge: 82801IM (ICH9-M) Everest gives me: Cantiga GM45, supported FSB includes FSB1066, and my effective clock is FSB1066.
@ytsbooth
@ytsbooth 4 жыл бұрын
@@BenDoesCoolStuff Hey man, thanks for your quick reply. "EVEREST" is indeed playing tricks on me with its max 800MHz FSB. I guess, I'll look for very cheap 1066MHz FSB Processor like T9400 and do the test. Cheers

@@thiagotocs Hey, yeah, it totally worked perfectly. I don't know what's up with these programs identifying the chipset differently, but the T9400 has been working without any issues.
