Watch how we fit and install a new skin for a Caterpillar 815F Soil Compactor blade. The blade has started to wear out and has a hole on the end so we show the step by step process to fit and install a new skin. First, we need to remove the cutting edges before we cut the new skin from high tensile plate using the plasma cutter. We then fit the skin to the blade but the profile isn’t right so it needs to be pulled into shop and tack welded in place before fully welding the skin to the blade. A layer of hardfacing wire is welded to the bottom edge to give it a longer life before the cutting edges are fitted back on to complete the job.
In this video we are using:
- Lincoln Electric DC-400 Welder
- Lincoln LN-25 Pro Wire Feeder
- UniMig Razorcut 45 Plasma Cutter
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

your bird friend brought back some memories for me. we nursed a baby crow back to health twenty plus years ago that one of my daughters had found. it was very thin and near death. it grew up in our house and liked to hang out with me in the shop. we taught it to fly and never restricted its freedom. eventually it grew up and spent more and more of its time with the wild crows in the neighborhood and less and less time with us. i really liked that bird, thanks.

"Aussie Animal Planet." I love it! Kurtis, you not only do a sterling job on repairs etc but you dispense wisdom and caveats and safety advice. I burst out laughing when you recalled the apprentice cutting through the fork lift blades - I don't normally do woodwork but a couple of months ago I got the circular saw out, clamped some timber to my folding Workmate and had at it - job done, except I had sawed through the Workmate itself so now I have a lopsided Workmate! 🤣💩🤬

Question for Karen: Were you some kind of professional before or you developed your filming and editing skills since becoming a KZfaqr? Love your edits, perfect use of fast forwarding, excellent close ups and great before and after shots just to mention a few. Love the way you insert Homeless in the middle of each video. It's like just a quick relaxing break between serious work. Videos wouldn't be half as good without you.

One of her talents is in "following the story." In essence, knowing what the audience wants to see. The close-ups being key to this. What's the info on the gas bottles, the face of the MIG welders, what the lathe tooling does exactly (love the chips!). It's like she knows this intuitively. We get to see it all and learn. Bravo to Karen! - Joe in Seattle.

Hey thanks for the question! I'm 100% self taught with the filming and editing have no professional experience. A lot of the information and close ups come about as a result of Kurtis and Karen responding to viewer requests. Seeing the bird in the shop reminded me of the time we had a pigeon making a mess in our shop. Well we had a big whiteboard in the shop and I had written on it Pigeon 1 P J Zero . WOW ! P J was hot. Well needless to say somehow that pigeon disappeared permanently over night. It’s probably the fact that explain why you do certain things and the outcome if you don’t , that’s why you have a successful Chanel. Oh forgot that you are a fantastic worker a definite expert. Oh also the dog, he’s so funny. Oh and now the birds 🦅. I think that’s it? Love you guys. Karen superb at her job as camera woman. You guys rock.

Damn that came up good man! I am moderately envious of the fact that you don't need to worry about endless amounts of red tape and get to apply practical common sense health and safety instead of some convoluted nonsense made up by some numpty with a clipboard that never worked a day in their life.

Kurtis, that was something very different and yet you obviously knew exactly how to do it and how to deal with the problems involved. You two are unbeatable. The video, editing, etc. are works of art, too. Thanks to you both, and to Homeless, George and the bird-folk for educational entertainment and outright fun. Warmest greetings from Bruce, Karin, Halgrim and Bella.

I´m just sitting here smiling ear to ear all throughout the video.. The knowhow you possess Kurtis, the pride in doing a, not just a good job, but a great job, is so nice to see.. The nice welds, which different materials to use, things to be aware of while working and just repairing things so they will last for a long time.. And Karen, as always, the filming is so proffessional.. the flow, the angles, cutting.. You make it so easy for us to see and enjoy the work being done by Kurtis. Love you guys. I´m looking forward to the next one.
