This tile entry was a fun project for us. We had to remove old mosaic tile, install double layer plywood and then install porcelain tile.
We started this job by setting up our dust control system and removing the baseboards. Once that was complete we then set out to remove the mosaic tile. We discovered that the mosaic was installed directly over particle board. The particle board was installed over 1/2” plywood, so we then knew we would be adding another plywood layer.
We removed all the tile then screwed the 1/2” plywood to the floor joists. Over time the plywood had worked a little loose and had some squeaks. Tile doesn’t like movement, so it was important that the subfloor be installed properly. We then installed a 3/8” plywood over the subfloor. The second layer of plywood is installed parallel with the first layer subfloor. The seams are offset for added strength and the fasteners only go into the subfloor. It’s important to not anchor the second plywood layer into the floor joists.
Once the underlayment is installed we can cover it with Ditra. Schluter All Set is used to bond the Ditra to the underlayment. Now we can lay out our tile and get the pattern figured out. The tile is dry laid across the entry and centered. Then the pattern is decided on for what looks best from the front door. We decided that the floral pattern was better than the diamonds so that’s what our installation is centered with.
The installation and grouting went smoothly and we reinstalled the baseboards. The homeowner is very happy with the work, as are we. If you’re in the Mid-Missouri area and looking for a tile installer contact me. I’m a Certified Tile Installer and my work includes a lifetime manufacturer warranty.
