Life on the Moose

Life on the Moose

22 күн бұрын

Using oversized 6x6's that were milled on Red Moose Ranch from Ponderosa Pine killed in a wildfire, I attach them to last week's buried brackets, and boom...we have posts! I used a similar method when I built the barn on the Ranch. No earth-to-wood contact here!
And like usual, I couldn't just go buy floor beams...I made them! I simply sandwiched, glued and screwed two treated 2x8's together. Fastened securely to the posts with structural screws, we are ready for joists.
This episode contains many sights and sounds of the stunning area in which I am blessed to work and video. When your view isn't interrupted by this weird guy working, the scenery is simply beautiful!
Thank you for watching @LifeontheMoose ! Without you, I wouldn't be here.
ANNOUNCEMENT: The Moose Merch store is under maintenance, and might not be open for business. Thank you for your patience while we take the necessary steps to remedy the situation.
PRODUCTS & TOOLS: Viewers ask me all the time what product I may be using in a particular video, and where one could get that product. Below is a link to some of my most used/oft-inquired products.
PLEASE NOTE: I would never recommend a product that I personally don't or wouldn't use.

Excellent entertainment, as always! Watching beam offset measuring with measurement tape pointing down between legs and laser point at that tape was fun! 😂 Lot of great jokes in this episode! Love idea to put seal between two deck joists to prevent moisture accumulation, considering, climate.. I think that, under these center blocks some gravel will prevent joist middle sagging from washouts - sand will go first leaving blocks hanging.. View from new outdoor kitchen place is gorgeous! 👍

@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 19 күн бұрын
I probably will do that. Although I really don’t think it’s a necessity. I believe the shear strength of one board over such a small area at the very ends, is still better than the deflection potential near the center of two boards. But…the pier blocks take care of that. Good conversation! lol. I appreciate the input.🙏

9:30 Water under what you're building. Once upon a time in the 1980s I lived in a little town called Imperial Beach in Southern California. We were in a duplex and I had a rat problem and an infant baby so I was on high alert. These were asiatic rats and really big. I'd killed one or two before I went to the middle of the building between the two halves and went into my water heater room for some reason. While i was in there the door blew closed and I saw light coming from the crawl space. It was light reflected off water. The pad had a 4 or 6 inch curb around it effectively turning the water leak from the faucet in the front of the house into a swimming pool and it was teaming with rats. I considered dropping a cable plugged from the 220v into the water but called the landlord instead.

Wow, trees with halos. Down here all we have are cacti with horns...tiny horns, like needles...and temps hovering in the 105° to 110° F area...but it's a dry heat. Well enough complaining...good to see you back at it. I have always supported you philosophy to do things your way and know that you're correct when you say "It'll be all right."; however wouldn't it be stronger to notch the posts and inset the outer part of the beam in a slot so it would rest on top of a support instead of hanging on screws? Believe me, I'd never question this except of a bad experience that I had with a porch roof construction where I did exactly the same thing you did and trusted the weight to screw support only.
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 19 күн бұрын
I don’t think you’re wrong! lol. I didn’t want to compromise the posts by notching them so close to the bottom. I think by the time I finish the floor structure, the strength may be more apparent as it’s all tied together. Stay cool down there! 🙏

Great job, Patrick!!! With these posts and beams I can see a kitchen there!! Just a question, by curiosity: why did you use those biggest beams one internally and the other externally considering the whole kitchen, instead of use both internally or both externally?

Thank you! If I understand the question, hopefully it will become evident in the upcoming videos. The canyon side joists will run long, over that beam, and I simply wanted the shortest span possible to accomplish the “plans” in my head. 🤔😅

@@LifeontheMoose thanks. I'm sure I will understand it soon and I will let you know. 😊 It's a pity we can't send an image or something like that to explain better. Many times an image is better than many words. 😉

Why is one beam on the outside of the post and the other is on the inside?
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 19 күн бұрын
Ultimately, the joists will be cantilevered over the “inside” beam. I believe it will be clearer as we make progress.

I may have missed something but was just wondering why you put the 2x8’s on the inside of two posts and on the outside on the other two?
@LifeontheMoose

If I understand your question, you’ll see the answer in the next video. I didn’t want to cut into the post, and I didn’t want to “hang” both boards to the side either. I’m no engineer, but I believe this connection will more than suffice. I’ll try to clarify coming up..

@@LifeontheMoose Let me try again lol. If you are standing in the kitchen looking toward the canyon, the 2x8’s are on the inside of the posts. If you are looking toward the back of the kitchen, those 2x8’s are on the outside of the posts. Inside and outside are only relative to the location of the 2x8’s as you look at them from inside the kitchen area. Hope this makes more sense than my first attempt lol.

@@timothychristian9140 I’m going to cantilever the joists over the canyon side. Just wanted a few inches shorter joist span. Good question!

2:10 I don't know if you've ever read the "The Long Walk" by Stephen King (I've completely lost respect for him recently due to...well never mind) In that story you had to walk 4 miles per hour to not be eliminated from the race. You're a contender! I don't recommend reading it because he's ... well never mind..
