Wow Mike.....warm, sunny weather, garage door open, two bikes outside ready to ride! You guys are so fortunate! We had our first snow here in southern Manitoba on Tuesday, and today's high is expected to be 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Oh well, only six months 'til riding season! Lots of time to work on the Shovelhead.

You make me feel guilty. But I know it's beautiful up there. How about a Harley powered snowmobile? I remember Dave Mann doing a painting of one back in the seventies.

You know, I think I remember that piece, but I can't remember from where. Maybe in Easyriders years ago. Dave Mann was a great artist. He could make chrome shine on paper! Died too young.

The thought of the foot clutch Harley, fills some folk with jitters, 'cos the linkages, in past ages, seem designed by framework knitters. Left to right & back again, pressed forces with scant notion, where they should be heading next, through jungles of lost motion. Bells & cranks & pivot points, with homes for 'slop' a plenty, so adjust them well, or rattle like hell, once your speed hits twenty*. (* Other frequency points are available - see 'Oddball Sprocket Monthly' for more details : ) Cheers my friends; & best wishes from the leafy remnants of Robin Hood country, they're blowing everywhere! : )

I find it's a dark art with the right side linkage rod making them fit 'just right' the one on my knuck was almost an install and go. On my UL I had to 'persuade' it with heat and a vice. Nothing ever seems to go straight on does it! haha. Albeit, my knuck engine went into my 39 frame without a single shim, it was like being touched by midas!

@@kjellblomstrand2497 Hello. In the old days, nobody ran valve seals. A lot of old guys still don't. I run them on my Shovehead. But my Panhead, I never have. But it's not so strange. @pacificmike9501
@pacificmike9501 3 жыл бұрын
Not dumb at all. You can make them perfect and they'll work well. They won't work quite as well as hydraulic drum brakes, which will work well when perfect. Then comes disc brakes which are better all the way around. Now we have "perimeter" brakes, which are awesome. That's the best "noncomittal asessment" I can give you.

Hey Mike where does the pedal return spring go?
@pacificmike9501

There isn't one externally, although the brakelight switch acts as one. The brake return springs are inside the drum and retract the shoes

@@pacificmike9501 oh ok, I ordered a kit from v twin and it came with a larger spring that I assumed was a pedal return spring. Thank you for the information and keep up the great content!!

Mike... I believe I heard you say in one video that you live /are in riverside.... not to be a stalker or intrude... but is a visit possible? Besides being a grasshopper in search of a pebble with my 56 pan, I’d like to pick your brain on a few topics... and pay homage to a great yoda as well. I’m local.

I do live in SoCal. I don't have a shop, I just mess around at home and build my own projects. I do try to go to the Long Beach Swap Meet Every month. It is tomorrow and I don't know if I can manage to go or not.

great video as always , it's nice to see small bits of progress every time . so i have a question . is there some reason the rear brake goes through the frame from the right side to the left , and the clutch is on the left and goes to the right side ? wouldn't it have been easier for the Harley designers and engineers to build it with the rear brake on the right side and all the clutch parts on the left ?

I've asked the same question. But I never got an answer.

You call it a cross shaft . Today terms refers it as a jack shaft . Just saying .

Sorry. Harley Davidson calls it a "crosshaft." It's a shaft that crosses to the other side of the bike. They also call what we think of as a "kickstand," a "jiffy stand." They made it and can call it anything they want. Actually, you can too. And, as for "today's terms?" Really?

Bothers you that badly? Yes, instead of motorcycle parts this month, I think I'll buy a really nice microphone. C'mon Rodney, we're just a couple guys in a garage.
