We are installing Coosa Board (a composite material that will never rot) into our vintage, 1973 airstream! Our airstream shell off restoration has been delayed due to weather so we are very happy to get back to work. Our original subfloor of our airstream is rotted and a piece of garbage! This is the step by step process of replacing a subfloor with coosa board.

*OUR STORY*
We're Meghan & Matt, two travelers from the United States on a journey to travel 1,000,000 miles! For 2 years, we lived in our self converted van and traveled all over North America! During this time, we caught the travel bug, HARD. So we set a goal to travel one million miles! Now, we’re hiking, biking, driving, flying and even training around the world to discover as much as possible! Recently, we sold our van and packed up our lives into bags and boarded a one way flight to Europe, leaving behind no house, no car and not even a house/car. Now we are embarking on our toughest project yet, renovating a 1973 Airstream!

Next time if you're ever having the fiber glass in your skin problem again. When I used to do auto body collision work, I found that if you apply tape to the affected area and rip it off, it pulls the fiber glass out of your skin. There would be no way in hell you can pick it out because of how fine they are. Use very sticky masking tape, I don't recommend using duct tape for painfully obvious reasons lol. I've also heard people using lint rollers as well.

I’m so excited for y’all! Can you share how you kept your original subfloor so intact to use as a template? We’d like to do the same (except for the back which is even more water damage than yours 🥴)
@Meghanandmatt

Thanks! We actually did nothing to them all winter lol. They just say out on a pallet for the most part. After the 4th snow storm I used them to keep the tarp on the trailer from sinking between the frame

@@Meghanandmatt but how did you pry them out without wrecking them? We haven’t even gotten our interior skins out yet so we have a little while, but given the water damage they are pretty gnarly

I cut out each and every bolt from the bottom using a pry bar and an oscillating multi tool (Make sure to get a bunch of extra metal blades cause you'll go through them. I found it easiest to pry up on the floor to slide the blade in and cut each bolt above the crossmembers. I just used a hammer and punch to smash the rest of the bolt and nut out from the top down once the floor was off. On ours there was a 5/8" piece of plywood where the first 3 subfloorfloor boards joined so I think that helped prevent them from getting totally wrecked when prying them out. Our floor was far from a perfect template but we just made sure to get the first piece of Coosa cut and didn't have to cut any of the long edges after that first one. I will say we cut slightly too little on our subfloor and our bow in the front should have been ever so slightly hanging over the subfloor cause it was an incredibly tight fit we're still working on with putting the shell back on. Hope that helps!

@Meghanandmatt
@Meghanandmatt 2 ай бұрын
Sweet! It was pretty straightforward once we got over the fact that it’s impossible to get it perfect lol. We’re using the Garnet industries SeeLevel sensors. I bought the 710-AR sensors which fit the smaller tanks
