This is a video on how I hang Schluter KERDI waterproof membrane over drywall. It's a straight forward process.
Hanging KERDI membrane is similar to hanging wallpaper. Instead of adhesive, you use unmodified thin set mortar. In this instance I use Schluter-Set.
I start by marking the walls for the boundaries of the membrane. I make sure the wall is reasonably flat without large globs of drywall mud. In this instance, I'll be applying the membrane into a window sill as well. I make sure the sill surrounding the window is flush with the drywall. I cut the membrane and dry-fit everything to make sure the install goes smooth.
Next I mix the thin set mortar. While the mortar is allowed to slake, I apply KERDI-fix on the flange of the tub and about 1 inch above it on the drywall. This will bond the membrane to the tub making a water tight seal. I also wipe down the walls with a damp sponge.
After allowing the thin set to slake for 10 minutes I mix it for another three to increase the open time of the mortar. From there, I begin combing thin set on with a 1/8"x1/8" square notched trowel. I embed the membrane into the mortar pushing the air out starting in the middle working my way out to the edges.
I finish up by waterproofing the window sill, faucet spout, mixing valve and shower head arm.
I will be adding a couple of thin pieces of membrane along the bottom outside edge of the tub using KERDI-fix.
All together an install like this takes me 2-3 hours. Because I started and stopped during the process, it increased my time to 4-5 hours.

Thank you for the compliment, glad you liked it! I just wish Schluter would make kerdi-membrane orange scented. I saw their spoof April 1st 2021 stating that it was coming out scented and totally bought it. "When troweling has got you down, all you need to do is give it a little scratch and a sniff. Good vid. I know nothing about this stuff but nonetheless am redoing my shower/bath enclosure. It seems to me that a hard rubber roller would work better for working the membrane on to the thinset. But what do I know? (I have one already so may try that)

Hey there William. Thanks for the comment and watching! I'm sure a roller will work well. I just used the piece of trim because it was somewhat wide and I could smooth more of the membrane down quicker. The most important thing is to use the correct trowel size to apply the thin set. I'm sure your project is going to turn out great! Thanks again. Let me know if you have any questions. -Mat

@Mat-W-1TFandF

Hey there Bill, thanks for the comment and watching! Great question. There's a couple reasons I used membrane. The first was that I was hired to do the surround after the sheetrock was hung and finished. The second is the cost savings was pretty substantial using Kerdi-Membrane vs Kerdi-Board. 1/2" Kerdi-Board is about $120 per sheet and I'd have had to use about 4 sheets. All 60sf of membrane cost about the same as one sheet of Kerdi-Board. Honestly, there's not that much more labor with hanging sheetrock vs Kerdi-Board. Especially when someone else hangs the sheetrock. :) Thanks again for watching and thank you for the comment!

We are getting ready to put a walk in shower in our bathroom. I thought i was going to have to remove all drywall and install cement board but after watching this video i can just buy this schluter kerdi and go right over my drywall? Also one last question for my subfloor for tile. Do i need to double up the subfloor or ad cement board? Or can i just go over the existing subfloor with ditra?

@Mat-W-1TFandF 6 ай бұрын
Hi there Eric C. Thanks for watching. I apologize for such a delayed response to your questions. I got behind in my correspondence and am just now getting caught up. Regarding the drywall, that is correct! No need to install cement board, just go directly overtop the drywall. A word of advice would be to make sure that the walls are plumb and square before getting started. You might need to remove a portion of the drywall and shim to getting everything leveled out (I carry a rare earth magnet to locate screws in order to remove drywall with minimal damage). If you DO need to remove the drywall and shim it, I'd recommend looking into using Kerdi-Board for the substrate. It removes a step in the process of waterproofing the shower. These products are far superior and much easier to use than any kind of cement board. For your shower floor, you'll need to use a "tray" or pan. If you're doing a "roll-in" or "curb-less" shower, you'll need to recess the subfloor into the floor joist bays. Then, insert the tray into the subfloor. If you're doing a curbed shower, check out this video series for how to install from start to finish: kzfaq.info/sun/PLTekIBzJTs4dFJAG42c_u46xIxdRZei4c&si=t2AiBuhZYBdGKcQi Another option would be to build your curb then drypack the pan so everything slopes toward the drain (min 1/8" per 12") then cover the whole thing with Kerdi-Membrane. There are other pan options but if you're using Schluter on the walls, you might as well stick with it for the rest of the install. Ditra is for tile flooring and is not waterproof. I would not use it as a shower pan or in a wet area. For flooring, it can be applied to almost every type of subfloor provided that the subfloor material is thick enough and joists are close enough together. Ditra is an uncoupling membrane. In simplest terms, it helps eliminate cracking if/when the subfloor shifts, expands or contracts. I do have the installation handbook so let me know if you need the parameters regarding your subfloor thickness and O/C measurements. I would recommend getting a Schluter Shower Kit. Here's a few links for almost everything you'd need: ***By clicking the links below, a couple pennies of your purchase goes to help 1T Fit and Finish through the Amazon Associate Program*** Schluter Kerdi-Shower Kit: amzn.to/3GAF6SG - Schluter Kerdi-Shower Kit 38" x60", PVC Flange amzn.to/41eghWl - Schluter Kerdi-Drain Grate Kit, 4" Stainless Steel Finish amzn.to/478ks7D - SCHLUTER SYSTEMS KERDI 1/8" X 1/8" SQUARE NOTCH TROWEL amzn.to/3No7DyW - Schluter Systems Thinset (ALL SET MODIFIED WHITE (50LB)) **This is a pretty good price (delivered)** Other Schluter Products: amzn.to/3NlBqbi - Schluter systems and products on Amazon Tools I use for Kerdi: amzn.to/46RM6Wb - Rubi 75420 PRO Bucket Trowel-Carbon STEEL-7" (Basically the same exact Kerdi-Trowel except $10 cheaper) amzn.to/46N1vXT - Rubi Tools Flex Square Notch Trowel - 1/8" x 1/8" (76961) I hope your project goes smooth. Does the drywall go to the tub abutment or the rim? I see you have it all the way to the rim, but usually I see it go to only to the abutment to avoid potential water wicking up the drywall.
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't hang the drywall on this job. However, the drywall will usually stop at the top of the tub flange. The solution is to apply the "Kerdi Fix" to the bottom of the drywall and the top of tub flange which discourages wicking.

Hey there Jon, thanks for watching and the comment! That is a great question. I have searched the Schluter installation handbook for the answer and there is no limitation with regard to wait times. I did find the answer at www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/faq/shower-system-kerdi-wait-before-tile-install?language=en_US. To answer your question; there is NO wait time once everything is waterproofed. The caveat is that it's recommended to do a 24 hr leak test prior to installing tile. Hi Lance P. Thank you for watching and the comment! I looked through the Schluter Kerdi installation handbook. The instructions only mention the solid backing materials that the membrane can be applied over. It doesn't mention anything about prepping. That being said, I'd recommend floating and finishing the drywall to a level 3. Then at least prime and paint a few inches beyond where the finished tile will overlap. If it were my job, I'd prime all the drywall/sheetrock. I hope that answers your question! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. No, not at all. The Kerdi-set is very easy to work with. It cleans up nice, and separates from the vinyl window. Kerdi-Allset bonds a little more firm. I pull back the membrane just a bit and set it with Kerdi-Fix. That bonds the membrane with the vinyl.

Curious, why go vertical with the strips and not horizontal, starting from the bottom up, letting each have the 2 inch overlay, water flows down, then you have no joints to fill in the corners and provides a better seal?
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF 4 ай бұрын
Hi MrGuvernment, that's a great question. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I understand your thought process, similar to "house wrap". The main reason I chose to install vertically was because I was hanging the membrane by myself. Installing it this way is much easier than having the roll draped over my head trying to imbed it into the mud. Using this product, I've found that thinset can build up in the corners pretty easy. I am able to take a little more time removing the air and pushing the thinset around to make the corners nice and tight. As long as the two inch overlap is maintained Schluter will honor the warrantee. The waterproofing comes from the bond between the fleece surfaces of the overlapped membrane. The seams on this particular install were in the field on the window wall, so there was no further waterproofing in the corners needed. Was curious so just looked at the Schluter "Installation Handbook" to see what it had to say. There's no mention of whether or not to install horizontal or vertical. However, one of the illustrations shows the installer applying it vertically. I've seen several installers on YT putting this product in horizontally. Looks like they turned out fine. I believe it's just a matter of preference. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching! -Mat W/1T

Do you have to remove paint from sheetrock before doing this
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF 7 ай бұрын
Hey there lancep9394! Thanks for watching. Reading through the Schluter installation handbook for Kerdi-Membrane I cannot find any requirements for the surface to be painted or not. That being said, here's my take. First, I'm not sure how you could remove the paint off of drywall without destroying the drywall. Second, in my opinion (opinion not fact) I believe that having painted walls would be better than unfinished drywall. The paper surface of drywall is porous. The taped joints are even more porous depending on the type of joint compound used. In my opinion, unfinished drywall would absorb moisture from the thinset. This could potentially weaken the bond a little. Finally, I have applied Kerdi-Membrane over both finished and unfinished drywall. I doubt it makes much difference at all. (That's the long answer) :) Thanks again for watching and the comment. Please let me know if you have more questions. I'm looking for ideas for new content your ideas would be welcome! -Mat W/1T

@Mat-W-1TFandF 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jen! Thank you for watching the video and thank you for the great question! I'll see if I can explain. I use so much thin-set that when I mix a bucket I do it by eye and the consistency (Loose or tight/runny or dry) that I'm looking for. Hanging membrane is a slightly more runny than setting tile. I don't know why, but I hate wasting thin-set. I try to mix approximately as much thin-set for as much time I have left on the job site for that day. If that makes sense. With that said; Schluter recommends 7.5-8.5 qts (7.1-8L) of water per 50# bag for membrane (wetter/looser). 5.5-6.5 qts (5.2-6.2L) per bag for setting tile. The window between too dry below 5.5 qts and too wet above 8.5 qts per 50# bag is broad. Both too wet and too dry are very noticeable so try relax when you're mixing mortar. For membrane, I look for a consistency where the mortar just barely holds a notch and will slowly slide off the bucket trowel. One 50# bag will cover approximately 200 square feet of surface using a 1/8x1/8 square notched trowel. I hung 59 square feet of membrane on that job. I could have divided out 1/3 (approximately 16.5 lbs) of the bag. That would cover approximately 66.7sf. The amount of water to add would be 2.5 - 2.8 qts (2.37-2.65L) If I were to do it this way, I might start off with only 2 quarts of water in the bucket, add the 16.5 lbs of dry mix then slowly add a bit more water while mixing until I find the consistency I'm looking for. Finally, the process of mixing a Schluter-Set is; "mix for five minutes, slake for 10 minutes and mix again for 3 minutes. It ends up being an extra 20-30 minute process. I was at a good stopping point at the end of that day. I hope I helped... I hope I didn't over explain... Thank you again, and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask!

I've always been confused as to the use of thinset for kerdi membrane. The thinset is not water proof. Why not use a liquid rubber water proofing compound?
@Mat-W-1TFandF
@Mat-W-1TFandF 4 ай бұрын
Howdy Mr. Krooner. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write a comment. I absolutely agree with you that thinset is NOT waterproof. This fact is lost on a lot of people and probably a large reason why some showers fail. Because of that, the Schluter system might seem somewhat counter intuitive. I'm no expert, but this is how I understand it; Schluter membrane is a polyethylene waterproof membrane sandwiched between two layers of polyester anchoring fleece. It is hydrophobic and water visibly beads up on it. When you apply the proper trowel thickness of thinset, between two layers of membrane, the fleece absorbs the thinset and creates a mechanical bond with the fleece of the adjoining membrane (like hook and loop fasteners... Velcro). The mechanical bond or tooth doesn't allow water to penetrate (*that much). The recommended overlap is two inches. The overlap and proper thickness of thinset are key (the trowel used for Kerdi is 1/8"x1/8" square notch which leaves 1/16" layer of thinset). I've played around with Schluter stuff quite a bit. Have had to demo a couple showers that were improperly installed. I've seen a couple seams that had a bit of water in them, but not more than about 1/8". That could have been from improper installation. While I've been installing, I've had some corners of the Kerdi-band covering screws on Kerdi-Board come up, but I think that's because I wiped the joint too dry or I bumped them before they set. The corners weren't allowed to mechanically bond to the base layer. Getting them wet again, cleaning the lifted corners then adding a bit more thinset will set the bond. Once bonded and completely dry, the tensile and shear strength is quite substantial with really good adhesion. At this point, there's hundreds of thousands of Schluter showers installed, if not millions. Schluter carries a lifetime warrantee on the products when installed as per manufacturer specifications (that covers ALL materials and labor). Some folks, a lot smarter than I, created this product. If it truly was inferior and/or not waterproof they absolutely wouldn't be in business. I have to say, it's super easy to work with. It makes setting tile a lot nicer than setting on some weird uneven Drypack, Durock and RedGard nonsense. Incidentally, to use the proper MIL thickness of RedGard on Durock takes substantially longer and costs as much if not more than Schluter... And what a toxic mess! I can totally see where you're coming from though. I was a skeptic too. :) Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm currently installing a small shower and will be uploading a new video soon. Please check out and comment on my other videos if you get a chance. -Mat W/1T

I usually use green drywall and redgard for my showers. I've tried kerdi. As a professional tile setter, I see zero value in this product compared to redgard. It's a royal pain to install, it's expensive, it's time consuming and it's difficult to keep the walls flat and the corners sharp. The build up in the corners when you have 2 or 3 layers of membrane bother me. Their curbless shower pan is very nice. The kerdi membrane is a bad product. Bottom line, if anyone is shopping for a waterproofing system, get the schluter shower pan and redgard for the walls.

Hey there Xavier. Thank you so much for watching my video. I appreciate your comment and value your opinion. I viewed your channel and your work is beautiful. I especially enjoyed the top video where you used Schluter Kerdi and Tray! That shower turned out amazing. Your point is valid regarding the build-up in the corners. It is certainly something that you have to keep an eye on. Kerdi is 8mil .008" (.1524mm) thick. Kerdi-Band and Kerdi-Kereck corners are 4 mil .004" (.1016mm). using a 1/8x1/8" square notch trowel and wiping tight with squeeze out, the layers should be right around 1/16" or about a millimeter. I use a 1/2"x1/2" square notched trowel and back butter 1'x2' tiles which gives me 1/4" (almost 1cm) of wiggle room. The Green board and RedGard waterproofing method has been around for a long time. It is absolutely a viable option for the DIYer and house flippers. It's somewhat cheaper (gallon of RedGard $70, two sheets of green board $40) (75' kerdi $150, 50lb Kerdi-Set $30). I personally wouldn't have the guts to warranty a Green board/RedGard shower. I've seen too many fail. The main reason I use the Schluter system is the warranty. If installed to Schluters specifications or as a "system" they warranty their products. Some installs qualify for a lifetime warranty. The warranty includes the full cost down to Labor and materials. I would guess it's the same in Canada. Totally worth the extra cost for that peace-of-mind. Again, I appreciate your post. I'll make you a deal. Hey there EuroMods. Thanks for watching the video and visiting the channel, and I appreciate your input. There's a bit to unpack from your comment. I'm only going to engage out of pure entertainment as it's very clear I won't be swaying your opinion. :) 1. Thin-set mortar is NOT waterproof. Half waterproofing makes absolutely no sense. There's no such thing. Er... I guess the shower could be half waterproofed, half leak and destroy half the kitchen below. Nope, a tub surround or shower is either waterproof or NOT waterproof. 2. Yes, I agree. Using Kerdi-Membrane is a great (and affordable) option to waterproof your surround or shower if drywall is already installed. The membrane was about $120. Kerdi-Fix is $16 for 100ml. Schluter Set Thin-set is about $35 for a bag. I did use two Kerdi-Kereck Outside corners on the window @ $34. So, $205 for a lifetime warrantee. Using your words, if it failed in 20 years it'd be covered. The membrane in this video has been installed as per the installation hand book and manufacturers specifications. It would be replaced under warrantee (labor AND materials)... ***Not used, but - Schluter-Kerdi tub kit is $244.73.... 3. Oh yea, it's actually extremely easy to use and install. Not that much work at all. In comparison to backer board, and 3+ coats of RedGard with a wienie roller, it's way easier, less mess and no toxic fumes. 4. I agree! From the studs, I would not use drywall and Kerdi-membrane. I'd use 1/2" Kerdi-board with Kerdi-band. The cost would go up a small amount, but would be offset from the reduced cost of drywall installation. It's way easier and faster (less labor cost) to install Kerdi-board and band than it is to install and finish drywall. And, also once again; lifetime warrantee. 5. One of the great things about Kerdi-membrane and Kerdi-board is that you can start setting tile immediately after finishing waterproofing. Can't say you could do that with Green board and RedGard. Or even backer board. I certainly wouldn't bet my business nor reputation on an unquantifiable liquid membrane thickness applied with a brush or roller. 6. To say the system is garbage is dubious. Actual "Kerdi" membrane was introduced in 1987. That'd be 35 years ago. If it truly was garbage and failed after 20 years, the company would have been out of business about 15 years ago. They're actually a thriving global company. From the Schluter Catalog: "Schluter-Kerdi is a pliable sheet-applied polyethylene waterproofing membrane and vapor retarder..." - Uh... It's hydrophobic plastic... In my life experience, plastic has been a pretty good way to repel or contain water and keep things dry. Plastic seems to last a pretty long time too. Like 1000 years or something. Look, I'm not a Schluter fan boy. There are many other products that look promising. Laticrete and Go Board have products that look really interesting. I'd like to know what their warrantees are like. Again, thanks for watching and visiting the channel. I appreciate your input. Absolutely happy to receive your comment... Just wish it was a little less crude and contained any verity, certitude or truth. So, thank you! I WILL continue to "flame away". :) -Mat W/1T
