This is the final episode in building the Prospector canoe. After many coats of varnish, it is time to permanently install the seats and yoke.

I built a strip canoe back in high school 30 yrs ago. I’m doing some upgrades and TLC on the boat. Your videos have helped a great deal. Thanks so much.

Hi Rod, thanks for your videos, they've been a great help. I'm over in Ireland and have been building a prospector ranger - started in May and starting to get close to completion now. I took a design decision to fit the inwales, outwales and decks with screws. I much prefer that approach, so was good to see your example and tips. 👍👍

Thank you so much for making this. The little tips here and there like recessing the nuts and drilling the spacer slightly off center are the things that make a difference in quality of work.

Whatever you charge for this canoe, it's not enough. It's rare to see a craftsperson of the highest order.

I hear that a lot. Price is based on what the market will bear and still making a living wage. And there is always someone who will charge less just for the sale.

Thank you very much for your video. Very informative on hanging seats and depth of hanging seats. One question though. Exactly how far fore and aft do you position the seats? How far from the bow to the bow seat and how far from the stern to the stern seat? Again thanks for the information

If you have a set of plans, there should be some information on the drawings. Or you can calculate out based on weights of paddlers so that the boat will trim properly. But that does not always work so I just place the forward seat one scupper more aft for leg room up front. A lot of plans are based on older traditional canoes that the more modern ones are modelled after.

I seemed to have spaced my front seats approximately the same distance from the bow on my 16ft canoe. Does the length of canoe determine the best position for the seats? I’m about to shift my back seat towards the stern about 5” but I’m concerned if that’s the correct amount

If you have the plans, there will likely be some measurements for where seats go. This is likely taken from historical canoes. The front seat should be further back from the bow than the stern seat is from the stern. This give the front paddler more leg room and when paddled solo, one sits in the bow and faces towards the stern. In a perfect world the seats would be placed so that when both paddlers are seated, the weight of each is balanced out, but this never really applies in practice. Hope this helps.

@@OrcaboatsCa This helps a lot! Pointed me back to my CanoeCraft book to do some research. Picking back up a project that was started over a decade ago due to various life interruptions had me questioning the actual plans mine was modeled after, As I duplicated a late friend's molds & didn't jot down which build it was made after. Turns out, I think I'm dealing with a Ranger, so will plan to adjust accordingly. Thanks!

Did you make the seats? Love the contour
@OrcaboatsCaАй бұрын
No. The seats are commercially made as much cheaper than weaving them.
