Today, I'm using Apex Engineered's 240z tubular front crossmember to install the 500hp crate LS3 engine into my Datsun 280z project car build. I'm taking a break from all of the fiberglass bodywork to work on smoothing the engine bay and installing the engine.

Excellent video. I have a stock-ish LS1 in my 76, I can't imagine having 500 hp and still wanting to boost it lol. Its such a joy to drive a light car with a fat/lazy powerband. They make fantastic daily drivers.

This hoist was an old coworkers. He cut the arm in half and angled it so he had more clearance for pulling the engine of his mr2. It does seem to help give room for the balance bar, but I'm sure the overall load capacity is effected

Looking great dude! Remarkable how well and LS fits in these cars isn't it? I can tell you that you are probably going to find the headers challenging to say the least. There is just so little room. I think it took me a full month to do the headers and finish the rest of the exhaust...but I shoehorned in a full dual 3" system, which arguably might have been overkill. On the passenger side you are probably going to find the starter and the Apex cross-member brace to be the major obstacles. It is also very difficult to get the collectors high enough to avoid losing a lot of ground clearance. But I'll shut up...you are going to see what I mean soon enough...LOL.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 4 жыл бұрын
How do you feel about making another pair? LOL. I was also planning a full dual 3in... honestly have been debating if it would be less headache to run them up and forward into a turbo. Have a friend hopefully going to help me on the headers, this will be the first set I've ever tried to build..
@johnshaft5613

@@GrindhousePerformance If you can get your hands on one of these, they are a life saver: www.trick-tools.com/Icengineworks-1-7-8-inch-Basic-Header-Modeling-Set-10442. I honestly don't think I could have done it without these blocks. So many small bends and twists are needed to make the headers fit....I don't even want to think about trying to mock it all up with sections of tube... They were the first headers I ever built also. If you have someone with experience helping you it might go a bit better.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 4 жыл бұрын
For how expensive those are, it'll probably pay for itself in time and materials saved, thanks for the recommendation!
@johnshaft5613
@johnshaft5613 4 жыл бұрын
@@GrindhousePerformance They are overpriced...but then again...no one else makes a similar setup. So, they can pretty much charge what they want I guess. If you are doing stainless headers....you are probably right....using those blocks might very well save you money in less wasted mandrel bent stainless tubing.
@MindDezign
@MindDezign 4 жыл бұрын
@@GrindhousePerformance with the HP you have ......exhaust routing Is only a neatness of installation and ground clearance. Those points of clearance mentioned sounds like you can run things forward and loop back similar to your turbo Idea( minus) the turbo for now. You have 300hp over a very peppy 200hp. So nothing you do in the exhaust will slow it down.

I have the same set up.. when pushing the motor back closer to the firewall where it belongs, how did you solve the clearance issue with the alternator and the Apex motor mounts..?
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Amy! With the low mount alternator, its extremely close to the apex mount and I'll most likely wind up putting a small notch in the mount for a little extra clearance. I'm using a 105 amp alternator which has the smallest physical size. I was not able to have the engine mount go all the way back on the slots without hitting. Bit of a bummer having to cut up powder coated parts, but seems par for the course on this project 🤣

First off, Awesome Build. I'm looking at buying the T56-Magnum as well for my own build! It would be awesome to see how it goes for you. What size wheels are those? I'm looking at ordering some for my 260z, the brakes are all being upgraded to mustang S550 parts interestingly. I'm swapping in a 1GZ-FE V12, and have actually been looking at Apex Engineered's front suspension kit as well. What a small world... Keep up the great content! P.S. I wish my engine would fit as well as that V8 Does :(

@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the 411's have very much aftermarket support so it'll really depend on your fabrication skills. You'll want to reinforce the chassis quite a bit so it doesn't pretzel on you. If you're lucky, parts for 510's or early Z series cars might interchange with the 411, but I honestly don't know whether that's the case. Chances are it'll be a pretty uphill battle unless you're very comfortable learning/executing on custom fabrication. That said... it'll be a fulfilling learning process if you're up for it!
