Looked around and found the cheapest water softener, read the reviews and decided to try it out, WATCH ME DO THE INSTALL. I also decided to install the A.O. SMITH Central Filter (which is a carbon filter) to remove odor and dirt particles.
A.O. SMITH 40,000 Grain = $450 (on sale)
A.O. SMITH Central Filter= $269 (on sale)
Copper pipe and fittings = $190
PVC pipe and fittings = $180
5- 50lbs bags of salt = $30
Total for project = $1,120

When you have a slow drip in your water line and it’s preventing your solder from flowing, stuff white bread in the pipe, it will block the water long enough to get a good bead and then dissolve when you turn your water back on and flow out of the pipe

@everythingreviewsandnews1229

Sure, it doesn't dissolve, it turns to mud and clogs up screens in faucets and the valves on the softener. There are special pipe plugs you insert into the pipe and when done, heat up the pipe where the plug is and it melts without clogging up aerators and valves.

Make sure to open all faucets and flush toilets so there is no suction and water will drain to the lowest point. Then, after time to drain, there is some flexibility in the pipe. Just before heating, pull down on the pipe to pitch any standing water, near the joint, out of the pipe.

My understanding of the pvc/cpvc issue is regarding hot water. You want cpvc for hot water lines. Also, the cement is not interchangeable. You need the cement for cpvc if using cpvc

Just FYI people (as an AOSmith rep). In some states in the West, such as Utah, these DIY systems aren't rated for the hardness of water you have. In the industry we call these DIY systems 'semi-soft' systems, and they are usually going out on customers in a few years. Nationally they have around 25% return rate through Lowe's. Point is, don't buy this system unless you really know what you're doing and you live in an area that's not too hard. I recommend finding a local AOSmith dealer that can come recommend a system for you home that will fully purify your water and last you for 10-20 years. If you're in Utah WaterQuest is a fantastic AOSmith dealer :))

I had media that looked like orange/red color oozing out of media tank seam at just under 5 years mark. Original color is yellow, must have turned red from iron in the water. But, I don't think they are using high-quality seal.... luckily got it replaced for free since media tank is covered upto 10 years. Just had to live without softener for couple of days and had to disasamble old one, come up with make shift bypass pipe, and install new one. I won't be buying AO smith products in the future, though.

@joshsansone5113
@joshsansone5113 Жыл бұрын
You can expect 30-60gallons roughly per regeneration cycle. If you properly size your system to your water usage and water hardness you should expect a regeneration cycle roughly once per week. 120-240 gallons per month. I installed a similar Morton brand 45,000 grain system for a family of 4 and honestly did not notice a difference on my water bills although I'm sure it was a minimal increase due to the fact it's using water once a week for regeneration.

I know this is old but I just installed this today and yes there is a significant difference. Our tap water used to smell bad and taste of chlorine. Would burn your eyes if you got water in them..now with the soft water and carbon filter the water is tasteless and odorless. And best part for kids is it doesn't burn your eyes! I installed a 4 stage system. 25micron pre filter. Water system by ao smith carbon filter, water softener and 5micron post filter.

Just the video i was looking for as i am shopping for a water treatment system and debating on whether a water softener or a saltless water conditioner with a water filtration system is the way to go. I am told by many that a saltless water conditioner with a water filtration system is better because there is no monthly overhead salt cost. How much is the salt usage costing you each month, and did you consider going with the saltless treatment solution?
@DrSlobGoblin
@DrSlobGoblin 2 жыл бұрын
Without salt, it's just a water conditioner and not a softener. Softeners remove calcium, magnesium, and iron with salt. The salt use is incredibly low. Unless you have a massive house with a lot of people, you're only looking at a bag, which you can pick up from Lowes, Walmart, Home Depot etc, every 1-2 months if you want to keep it topped off. Realistically, as long as you can't see the water line in your brine tank, you don't NEED to add salt yet.
@mikefa5891
@mikefa5891 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrSlobGoblin Thank you - really appreciate your input as i am on the fence on whether an actual water softener is worthwhile since the water conditioner supposedly will neutralize the hardness of the water (descale) without actually removing the minerals.
@DrSlobGoblin
@DrSlobGoblin 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikefa5891 The minerals being present is the hardness and the scale. Unless there's some magical new technology that prevents them from settling on surfaces or sticking together, they'll be there.

not much since the ion exchange method used in these softeners does not remove any organics that cause the usual taste and odor issues with tap water. you need a separate reverse osmosis system to help with that.

the old timers at my job used that method, they'd break off a piece of their sandwich bread and push it into the line. It would swell and stop the leak for them to sweat the line. Afterwards, start flowing the water and the bread would either break down or flush out the lowest pipe

And why would you want to use copper at all in 2021? pvc with glue is so much cheaper and if you're lazy and have a lot of money use shark bite. If its outside though just use pvc and the cement as far as you can and save the money.
