Making the most of a small shop Ep.2.
Getting rid of some of the clutter in my shop by installing a suspended shelf that can fold up into the roof and out of the way.
IMPORTANT: The shelf is NOT completely finished as it poses a degree of risk of injury. I still need to install a safety mechanism that would prevent accidental drops by attenuating folding speed and supporting the bulk of the weight. I am currently working on such a solution and hope to add it soon.

Very nice. Only one thing I would change. Because it comes down right against the wall, you cannot have anything behind it on the wall, forcing the wall to be empty at all times. I would suggest pulling the unit away from the wall (with some sort of stopper when it is pulled down, of course) so that you can have space to store additional items on the wall.

I wanted to say, that while I was looking at this setup as the "perfect" solution to my 1 car shop, I NEEDED your comment! Honestly, why wouldn't you flat store tools and have the bulky things drop when needed! Thank you for being kind enough to point out even further practicality!

No need a stopper... put the hinge in line with the shelf's front. (You can keep very rately used tools in lost place between the hinges and wall-above the shelf unit). My 2 cents...

Yes I agree. If you have a cabinet or workbench along a wall you could build this to fold down in front of those cabinets when needed. As for dealing with the weight and to make it even easier you could put a pully and cable to close them. Even use a small electric wench and then you could just mount a up and down on the wall. I have a single car shop and space is tight. I would like to do this in my walk in closet too.

I am so PISSED OFF right now! Why did it take KZfaq SO LONG to introduce me to this channel!! It's fantastic. My Grandfather was a civil engineer, and used to send me plans for what I wanted to build. Unfortunately he passed away last week, and I just got back from the funeral yesterday. I'm laughing as I'm typing this my friend. It's simply brilliant and I was looking for a really good storage solution to get some tools or other items up to my workshop ceiling. I only have a 16x10ft shop which is about the same as ur shop my bro. Ur shop is probably a bit bigger by the looks of it but I think not by much.. Maybe a foot or 2 each way.. I love this storage solution man.. Keep building smart solutions bro. I will keep using them.. Sorry but I'm new to the workshop ideas so I will pick others brains all I can. Thanks man.

WRT the dowel rod inside of PVC pipe, next time, score the dowel rod with grooves that either run down the length of the rod or in a spiral pattern. As you watch your video of assembly, when you are pressing the dowel rods into the tubes, you see the MAJORITY of the glue being wiped out of the joint. The grooves hold the reserve of the glue inside the joint while the glue cures. This IS the reason why premade dowel pins have those grooves in them. Lots of experience went into that simple modification, best to copy it.

Your brother is absolutely right about the clothes storage for small spaces! I watched this all the way through as it’s the closest thing I’ve found to an idea for linen storage where there limited space. We’ve got super high ceilings in our home, and being able to modify this design to drop down linen storage would be perfect! Of course it would need refinement for indoor usage. :-)

One if the most ingenious ideas I have seen on youtube for a long while. There is just one thing I might have done differently and that is to set the hinge point further out from the wall so that the shelves don't drop down against the wall. If this was done you could still put shelves up on the wall and your roof shelves could still drop down in front of them. However, I am still very impressed with what you have done, what an awesome solution for a small workshop.
@EngNerdGMN
@EngNerdGMN 4 жыл бұрын
Tip for this: Place your heavier items on the upper shelf as the hinge itself will carry the predominant portion of the weight making it easier for you to open and close. Granted this means that you have to lift the heavy items to the high shelf, but you won't have to again lift them every time you open and close it.
@Woodledude
@Woodledude 4 жыл бұрын
I think that depends on whether you lower and lift the whole shelf more, or that heavy thing on and off the top shelf. I'd guess the former, but it's a situational thing.

I saw this idea employed in an episode of Tiny House Nation. To accommodate clothing storage in a sleeping loft, they built a thicker loft floor and storage units similar to the ones you build in this video. The units opened downward to the laundry area, so it was easy to stow clean folded clothes right out of the dryer. Hinged access doors in the floor of the loft provided access to clean clothes. When I saw the episode, I immediately recalled having watched this video. Well Done!

A really good and instructive video on a great idea with even better execution. I can imagine building something like this, sunk into the ceiling of bedrooms in older homes that may have wooden ceilings instead on concrete ones, right between the support beams. Definitely would work with lightweight storage. Although I am tall, I can see unlatching it as a hassle for some. I am curious to see about making a floor platform with this kind of a mechanism in mind for a tiny house type scenario as they love to use both upper and lower hidden storage.
@satibel
@satibel 4 жыл бұрын
@@postscript1561 I think for a floor platform you could basically reverse it and move or add a platform to the top (now bottom) of the shelves I'm thinking for like plates, utensils, spices, etc... with a desk/kitchen combo, fold the desk up, lift the chair/floor, and you have a kitchen ready to go. you could even make a shower like that, make the lower shelves smaller, and add a cloth and shower head on the top one. using a latch with a rope, car trunk cylinders for slowing it down, and a pulley on the you can make an overhead hidden compartment that even children can use.
@charlesmasclef1309
@charlesmasclef1309 3 жыл бұрын
Coming from the floor or the roof is either way not very efficient for tiny homes. You save space when it’s open/close but you also need a clear space in order to open and to close the whole thing. It’s a good design for nails and workshop storage, yes, but for spices that you’ll need to open atleast twice a day it becomes less reliable. As an alternative I can propose one genius idea I saw in a friend’s parents’ house. They have drawers & cabinets in their non-supportive walls. It sounds stupid but it saves a lot of space !

@@RouteNRide Its only in the way when your getting a tool you need it folds back up. in a garage that size space is such an issue that just that much storage give you a place to stand. I have times more space or more like 10 times more and its not enough space. I'll bet that will hold 350 lbs of stuff and not fall. But yes he needs a way to balance the load putting it up or taking it down. However it will help build arm strength. Wow...just amazing craftsmanship. I have watched a few of your videos now and they keep getting better. You are like a master carpenter. Each video I learned a new technique to improve my own skills when building something as a personal project around the house. Thanks for your great content, can't wait to see more of your videos 😃👍👍

Love the solution and I think it's one that would work well in a lot of UK workshops as people have exposed rafters in their flat rooves or rafter ties in their pitched rooves. I'll be looking at it for extra storage in mine!

Give it time. Some tool manufacturer will see these vids and he will have a sponsor before you know it. He has a great future, me thinks.

That clothes storage idea is incredible, definitely look into it! A solid edge frame, lights in the face would certainly make it more bedroom friendly!

Nice work. With a table saw like you can build anything. Not having a table saw makes it a lot harder. That’s the only problem with a lot these projects. There built with all the right tools. Thanks for sharing
