So with the Intellect Devourers, our party at the moment consists of a Paladin (Strength, Constitution, Wisdom), a Barbarian (Str/Con), a Druid (Wis), a Sorc (Charisma), and either a Bard or Rogue with Performer background (Both Dexterity/Charisma). None of them are Intelligence focused classes. :B

As an avid d&d player, I couldn't ask for a better adaptation of the game to screen! There are so many details to notice - every location, spell, and monster that you see on screen is something recognisable from one of the game's sourcebooks! Even more importantly though, this film perfectly captured the nature of a d&d campaign, balancing people's sometimes serious backstories/character motivations against goofball shenanigans, constant screw-ups and the resultant improvised planning. Watching this, you can see the moment one of the "players" got a bad dice roll and had to deal with the consequences, like how Edgin spent the entire first fight in the alley trying to escape his bindings while Holga beat all the guards up.

As a huge D&D nerd, I absolutely adore this movie. It just feels right. It's funny and wholesome. It's awkward and endearing. The use of practical for most creatures like Jarnathan and the Tabaxi, as well as the magic sand pit and stuff, just makes it more crunchy and grounded. So glad you watched.

Also also i thought youd like this Fun Fact Possibly the greatest easter egg is the blink-and-you-miss-it tribute to the 1980s “Dungeons & Dragons” animated series. As Holga, Edgin, Simon and Doric are elevated onto the floor of the High Sun games, the third team is dressed as the original characters of the 1980s cartoon. The actors are the same who voiced Eric the Cavalier, Hank the Ranger, Presto the Magician, Bobby the Barbarian and Diana the Acrobat.

The tiny Bradley Cooper is a mini-cooper, and the arm wresting wizardry at the end is ending with hand-to-hand combat. Also one of the saddest things about Holga asking "don't tell me you wasted it on me" is because she truly didn't believe she was worth saving at the cost of Edgin's wife. It was the love of everyone around her assuring her that she was absolutely worth anything they could give. One other thing is Themberchaud, the pudgy dragon. He has his own lore, but the short of it is that he was taken as a baby and kept fat so he couldn't escape, instead only being able to light forges. He has his own lament too: "And now I am far too large to ever leave. Even if I tore the entire place down around me, I could not claw my way to the surface from here. Instead, I remain buried in a prison of my parents' making, far beneath a sky I've never seen."

"We must never stop failing, because the minute we do, we've failed." Fun Fact: Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello makes a cameo during the Arena sequence. What Script Fact: Regé-Jean Page improvised the scene where Xenk steps right over the boulder, barely even breaking his stride. Chris Pine then improvised the resulting narration. Lost In Adaptation: Druid Doric (Sophia Lillis) repeatedly turns into an Owlbear, which appears to be her favorite form for fighting. According to the current official rules of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, a druid cannot turn into an Owlbear. A druid can in fact only turn into a Beast (and eventually an Elemental), but the Owlbear is classified among the "Monstrosities" and a druid character cannot take the shape of those particular creatures. Game Accurate Fact: The movie is set in the Forgotten Realms setting. All the spells used in the film, while largely unnamed, are all legitimate spells used in the Dungeons & Dragons. The overweight red dragon the party encounters in the Underdark is Themberchaud, a known powerful denizen of the Underdark. In an overhead shot as Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) walk through town, you can see two rust monsters fighting over a scrap of metal, which serves as food for this species. The prison Edgin and Holga escape from is Revel's End. A prison built on a cliff-side overlooking the Sea of Moving Ice in the Frozenfar region of the North.

29:52 AN IMPORTANT CAMEO: In the tournament/deathetrap game, there were three groups. One of the groups were "the young pupils" from the 1980's Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. The cartoon was on for 3 seasons and had a bunch of teens "learning" life's lessons. Each having a magic item of incredible power. This was one of the most fun episodes for me kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6-YeZZeuLWshGw.html . I like the Season 2 Into best though 😄 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKmobKWHybDVqYk.html

Saw it during a "free weekend" of a premium channel and I had I been sipping a beverage, I would have pulled a 'spit take" when I saw the love action versions of the the Saturday morning cartoon characters! No doubt I'm reading too much into the situation, but given "Bobby the Barbarian" is tightly muscled teen in their cameo, it seems they've been trapped in this realm for several years.

GO PLAY THE GAME! (Yelled out like a true fanatic LOL). The movie reflects many of the ideas found in the game. The city of Neverwinter, The Harpers, The Red Wizards of Thay, the fat dragon Themberchaud, are all big deals in the game. Even the spells and the not so human looking intelligent species in the movie are in the game! The adventures range from family rescues to wars to greedy thieves. With the pieces in place, like the saying goes, "Adventures are limited by your imagination."

As someone who was quite excited for the Dungeons and Dragons movie that came out in 2000, and then was ridiculously disappointed, except for Jeremy Irons chewing more scenery than Alan Rickman did in Robin Hood, this movie exceeded my expectations. I have to admit that I don't know a ton about Dungeons and Dragons. I tried playing it once where I got the premise, but I probably wasn't the right target audience at the time. Despite that, I still enjoyed the movie. It had a great story, great characters, great humor, amazing visuals, and they don't constantly throw references and expect you to get them. As an avid D&D player myself, and who spent many years questing in The Forgotten Realms, I do feel the need to point out a few problems with their choices of locations and such. For example, placing the graveyard in The Evermoores, and area of Faerun also known as The Troll Moores. Take a wild guess why they're called The Troll Moores. I'll give you a hint. It's NOT an ironic nickname. Also, the writers probably should have chosen a different Uthgardt tribe for Holga to be from. While the Uthgardt do have a Tribe Of The Elk, many people are likely to confuse that Tribe Of The Elk with the Tribe Of The Elk from Icewind Dale, where Wulfgar from the Drizzt Do'Urden novels is from. The Sky Ponies or The Tribe Of The Griffin would have been a better choice. Oh, and i know that she's Uthgardt and not from Icewind Dale because all Icewind Dale barbarians have blonde or red hair, while all Uthgardt barbarians have black or brown hair. Also, the writers should look more deeply into the abilities of a bard. In the game, bards can use light martial weapons (daggers, short swords, rapiers, light crossbows, etc), and can cast spells (not as well as sorcerers or wizards, but they can cast spells). But all that the bard in this movie could seem to do was play his lute, make plans for heists, and hit people with said lute. Seriously, he's not The Honky Tonk Man from 1980's WWF. Theres so much more that he could have done. And while we're on the subject, druids can do a lot more than just Wild Shape. They have spells too, and a completely different spell list than sorcerers, or even bards. Just saying. And how did Xenk the HUMAN Paladin manage to be at the battle between The Elk Tribe and The Cult Of The Dragon, which was ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, and still be around a hundred years later without aging a day? I mean, there are magics that can extend one's life beyond their natural age limits, but they still tend to age physically. They just tend to continue living after they should have dropped dead of old age. They certainly don't stay young and handsome, capable of fighting (and defeating) several opponents in melee combat with ease. I know, I know. These are all nitpicks. And I want to be perfectly clear, I freaking LOVE this movie, and I sincerely hope that there will be a sequel. However, I also hope that the writers of the sequel choose to do a LITTLE MORE research into the world in which they're basing their movie.

I am so disappointed with this movie. It feels like a gaming session not at all to me. It doesn't remind me of playing D&D, except for all the name dropping and inside comments. If you compare the way *The LEGO Movie* harkened back to how it felt to play with Legos as a kid, this movie -- and all D&D movies -- feel far more like infomercials, than an open-world creative environment. D&D is not passive, so sitting and watching a narrative is not like playing an RPG. And it leaves out the whole tabletop part of the game, the DM and gaming culture and all of the trappings of the gaming session. Both *ET* and *Stranger Things* were better at showing off D&D and showing appreciation. If you're only going to display the narrative, then all movies are RPG movies, and *LotR* would be the OG D&D movie, since that's where it started (despite the claims in Tolkien estate lawsuits).

What are you saying about _The Lord of the Rings?_
@willcool713
@willcool713 3 ай бұрын
@@HuntingViolets D&D was inspired by wargamers who wanted to stay in Middle Earth after they finished the books. There were lawsuits from the Tolkien estate immediately which continued for over a decade. Halflings were originally called Hobbits, for instance. And a Type VI Demon was called a Balrog. TSR really pushed it after the initial suit and ripped off as many franchises as possible, which you can see in the original AD&D printing of Dieties and Demi-Gods. The idea was to try to demonstrate that D&D was not entirely based on Middle Earth, because they were afraid that Tolkien's estate would either close down the game or the court would award the intellectual property right of the game to the Tolkien estate. By having other literary franchises join the suits, there would be competing interests that would prevent the IP from changing hands (though there were damages awarded).

@willcool713, with all respect, it seems this is not the movie for you. This is clearly a fantasy/ action/ comedy movie set within the DnD/ Faerun world. @willcool713
@willcool713 3 ай бұрын
@@fieryangel522 To me, it's not about D&D, it's just the narrative summary in plot form. It's a book in movie form, not a campaign or anything other than the trappings of D&D, not about the part of the game that I love, or the way it impacts me personally. It's a fine fantasy action movie -- if they wouldn't shoehorn in so many inside references, which I find precious and cloying, but I can forgive that. I just don't feel it puts the culture forward, only a product. That's been the problem with every D&D movie, this one just has a decent budget. But thanks for the recommendation, I'll look it up.
