Locked On USC

Күн бұрын

There's no way to spin it, USC went into their biggest game of the season, and rivalry game against Notre Dame, and looked unprepared. Lincoln Riley's offense struggled from the top with play calling and poor clock management, to Caleb Williams's 3-interception 1st half performance that put a struggling Trojans defense with the backs against the wall on short fields.
Despite getting little to no help from its offense or special teams, I am comfortable saying the defense played its best and most complete game of the season. They did not create any turnovers, however, they were good on 3rd down and playing a little short-handed due to injuries.
Normally the team takes most of the heat for poor onfield execution. In the loss to Notre Dame, this game falls on the head coach and his cavalier, lazy approach to the game. No walk-thru or an appreciation for what happens when USC and Notre Dame play may have played the biggest role in the team's performance on the road.

Get used to that "we're close" thing. He did that at OU until the day he ran. The main thing I was angry about when he left was the lying, because he flat out lied to fans, players, coaches, everyone. I was mad when he tried to poach Bedenbaugh, Demarco Murray and every player possible. I was mad when Caleb was still playing games pretending he might stay as Dillon Gabriel's transfer window was closing, potentially leaving us without a qb. Then there are the things I was happy about. The defense would eventually improve, become average, good, eventually elite especially after BV was named HMFIC. I was glad we could recruit not just elite defensive players again, but a tougher type of guys in the trenches. Last year was rough, but this season has shown Oklahoma came out on top in this exchange. OU football looks like OU football again. We have a potential path to the playoff and a real chance to win if we make it there.

Oklahoma fan here…thanks for taking our problem. I was wanting Riley gone for 2 years before he left. He is lazy recruiter and when he left he took the only 5 star with him. He left OU bare on talent and fortunately Venables recruited great to get us back. While at OU Caleb struggled against top defenses that pressured. I don’t know what Grinch has on Riley but any DC that consistently ranks poor every year that still has a job is troubling. Hopefully USC will wise up and fire him.

Yeah, as an OU fan I didn't understand the defending of Riley's practice policies. Like, USC fans were weirdly defensive about it but there's a reason people want to see what's going on. Riley acts like their season will fall apart if you find out what they're doing in practice but then falls apart every year anyway. He literally had the glass stained at OU on the building around the practice fields....then the stories came out of not practicing, not tackling, not showing up to workouts when the workouts are lame to begin with. I have a feeling the LA market will be a lot less patient with him.

One of the benefits to the transfer portal is that you can fill needs instantly. The downside is, some of those transfers were big recruits who couldn't find enough playing time at their respective programs, obviously because they may have been over rated by the scouting services. I'm thinking of the offensive line at the moment.

As an Irish alum, and after the punch in the gut giveaway of the Ohio St game in the last literal second on the last play, followed by last week's despicable showing in Lville, THIS WAS SUCH A JOY TO WATCH FOR 3 HOURS!! COMPLETE UTTER DOMINATION AND OBLITERATION!!! Notre Dame had the correct and perfect game plan to pressure and contain CW. Unrelenting pressure. No holds barred. Blitzes. It was a work of art. Unlike last year, where ND didn't rush 5, and stayed back in coverage, which didn't work. Kudos to Golden for this game plan of keeping the pressure on CW and making him uncomfortable and hurried. It was beautiful. You're quoting meaningless stats dude. NDs offensive yards gained, plays run, time of possession DON'T MEAN SQUAT WHEN YOU FORCED 5 TURNOVERS TO PUT THE BALL IN USC TERRITORY!!!! THE STATS DON'T MATTER!! YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE ND TURNED EVERY TURNOVER INTO A SCORE!! AND THE TDS WERE EASY. ESTIME WAS BARGING THROUGH HOLES WITH MINIMAL RESISTANCE. You don't seem to understand that when you have drives of only 10 or 20 yards etc, you don't need long time consuming 70 and 80 yard drives! Plus, when you score right away on a KO return and fumble scoop snd score, you then kick off right back to USC!! So of course USC had more yards, more plays, more Time of Poss! DOOHHH!! NOTRE DAME SCORED AT WILL AFTER EACH TURNOVER. Come on man, surely you have seen enough football to understand that. You're wrapped up in stats when you should be focusing on heart, desire, physicality and moxy. NOTRE DAME WAS MORE AGGRESSIVE AND WANTED TO WIN THE GAME MORE!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

OU alum here. I have no personal beef with USC, so I say this earnestly. When Lincoln was hired by you all, Sooner nation wasn’t hating on you all, we were just giving you a real evaluation of Lincoln Riley. Here in Oklahoma, OU football is sort of a state cornerstone. We don’t have a pro team, so everyone follows OU like a cult. My wife is Californian and doesn’t really get it. Just to say… everyone here followed Lincoln’s every step for 7 years. He was our guy and we knew him better than anyone. He doesn’t make his star players practice or workout. Perrion Winfrey is a key example. Also, the OU team did not like Jalen Hurts because it wasn’t a culture match. Jalen famously would work out for 2 hours right after the game. That was a huge red flag for everyone here. Not to mention all the arrests and whatnot that kept happening. Buckle up Trojans. It is going to get weird.

Yep, OU fan here too and no disrespect to USC, but what @aaronpeckham9508 said is exactly true. When our old Strength coach came back to OU after Riley left he was appalled at the lack of strength training the OU players had which lead to a lack of physicality and on both sides of the ball. Also if you look at his stats after he took over for Bob Stoops his offensive stats each year got slowly worse. Riley is an offensive wizard, but only if he has a superhero QB.

@alphadragongamingFTW
@alphadragongamingFTW 10 ай бұрын
@@scottroper1505 The playoffs were in its infancy when riley took over. So it is not like Stoops could not do anything. OU had always been a contender for a national title each year, granted they did not always make it to the game but they were for the most part always in the conversation. The reason why Stoops hired Riley was because the OU offense over the last few years had gotten away from the air raid offense and he wanted to bring it back. It wasn't because they were struggling so much on offense. Riley was hired in 2015 that was the first year for the Playoff I believe, it may have been in 2014, but nonetheless it had nothing to do with not being able to make the playoffs. Bob Stoops had made the national title game several times after their 2000 championship team but just was not able to quite get over that hump and he felt that getting back to the air raid might help out, which it obviously did not.

USC fan here and it's obvious Lincoln Riley has been exposed. He's a great QB coach but a below average head coach. His recruiting is bad and he's basically lived off the transfer portal for talent...he's not landing any big names on either line and not landing big names on defense. Colorado switched to a man defense in the 2nd half and it blew up our offense. Arizona and ND ran a man defense and our WR's can't get open and it's blown up our offense. Lincoln Riley teams are bad on defense every year and the issue never gets fixed. Special teams have no coach and it shows. Caleb Williams is the best QB we've ever had and he'll leave without winning the conference or playing for a championship...let that sink in.

Even people who supposedly know what they’re doing ranked both schools MILES above where they really are because it makes good talking points on their respective outlets. SC at number 10 was ludicrous. They struggled against teams that ANY top 10 team should beat by 50. Even the Coaches ranked them high simply because it’s Riley and Williams. Not because of the production on the field.

Totally agree 👍 Caleb Williams has gotten spoiled by NIL money, media exposure and has lost focus on the college game and his future number 1 pick in NFL draft ! Caleb Williams is more concerned about his nail colors and outfit looks more than his football future ! Lincoln Riley is loose and doesn't seem all concerned about the collapse of his team ! LR also has lost his credibility as a great offensive mind in college games ! Of course, LR has become less desired to be NFL offensive coordinator not to mention a head coach! LR still can sail the ship of usc to the safe shores if he has been genuine! he must leave his close friends and special advisors out of his way if they are not doing their jobs in a proper way and assign the suitable coaching staff for special teams and defense ! HE shouldn't be stubborn or he may leave earlier than expected with lack of football management credibility.

I never believed in him like i never believed in Helton. I remember ppl saying it was an overreaction to fire Helton earlyim his tenure. Especially in college football, u can easily tell apart the contenders & pretenders. Lets be real, Riley aint ever gonna fix this soft culture & defense. Thats just who he & his program are. Just like Kiffin, just like Sark, & especially like Helton. Dont give him a few more years, for what? So we can continue to be soft & lose big games? Lol nah. Hire a tough minded head coach who can hire the best staff & not his buddies. Hire a coach that can actually develop ALL his players & not play favorites. Trust me, the longer we keep Riley, the same sh()t will happen just like in OU, just like Helton, just like Kiffin (preseason ranked 1 in 2012, ended 7-6 but still kept him for 2013 season. For what? Ended up firing him beginning of the season). Bohn kept Helton for the 2021 season, for what? 2 games in & he fired him, which lead to one of the worst USC seasons in the history of the once proud program. This is NOT an overreaction. Riley should of nvr been hired in the first place.

Defense does not get a pass…special teams does not get a pass and the offense damn sure doesn’t get a pass. As bad as the offense played, they were only down 11 with 7:20 left in the 3rd. What happened next, big chunk play for TD. All we hear is the offense has to bail out the defense, why can’t the defense bail out the offense. No matter how shitty the offense played and put them in one horrible spot in the first half with the ball one the 1 yard line……they could’ve held them to field goals on the other 2 turnovers, but they can’t bcuz they’re not built that way.

Exactly, just because we only allowed 250 yards, it was still not a good defensive day. If you only have to make from the 20 yard line of course you aren’t getting 80 yards on a drive. Curtis still started, the put Stanley and Tyrone in next to Bear instead of Barrs, etc. Roland-Wallace and Bear did their jobs but this defense is still the Grinch special. Obviously Riley doesn’t dictate personnel decisions on D given this fact. I’m not saying Defense lost the game, but they still weren’t great. Not many turnovers this year either. The issue now is that after moving from bottom feeders to the good games, Riley and staff didn’t apparently know our Offensive line outside of Monheim is like a wet paper towel. LR better adjust his scheme for this fact or we are losing a lot more games this year.

The defense gave up more than their average of 27 PPG/G. I believe the defense is officially listed as giving up 34 of their 48 pts. ND is just not explosive so it didn't look like it normally does. ND didn't have to open it up, they just ran a clock killing, ball control offense. I know the short field had alot to do with it but did you see Washington stuffed Oregon twice inside the 5 yard line on 4th down and they got zero pts..

Embarrassing. 1. Your best fact: This is the 4th game in a row where USC did not look like the better team. --2nd best: AZ is getting better, we are not. 2. I don't understand why our opponents clearly look at film and devise a game plan that works while USC hasn't done that in a decade. That's part of the culture that needed to change. --ASU,, Colorado and AZ may not have won, but they out-coached Lincoln Riley and scared us to the point that the loss to ND was obvious. 3. The team (offense mainly) looked like Clay Helton has been secretly coaching again -- sloppy and no focus. Lots of TFLs, penalties and turnovers. 4. The KOR for TD was a back-breaker that kept a miracle comeback from happening. We have had greater comebacks than being within 11 with 9 minutes to play. The team quit after that KOR. (Final 13 plays: 13 yards. TFL, Penalty, sack, incomplete pass, penalty, sack, fumble and fumble.)

Does anyone else feel like USC might have hired Bernie Madoff as our head coach? This game has me questioning everything and a lot I didn’t think I would have to worry about. So has the defense really been Grinch’s fault all year? I mean it’s the same defense Georgia runs. How do we know the defensive issues aren’t actually LR’s fault? When is it gonna happen that LR blames this roster for not winning like he did at OU? Would we be better off with Dan Lanning as our coach? He’s kicking our ass in recruiting. Our style of offense can win a lot of games. It’s not the philosophy, watch Kalen DeBoer coach. SOMETHING DEEPER other than X’s and O’s is going on here. I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn about these issues sooner than later.

Time to take a deep breath. My initial take is they are not prepared for the hostility of that first quarter. Sometimes you just run the ball not force the passing game. I saw guys in the offensive line doing zero blocking. Maybe the worst performance of an SC offensive line I've seen. None of them are worthy of starting. Move on . Caleb's floaters my fifth grader would have intercepted.but it all started with the worst performance of the offensive line . I'd fire them all .

The signs was all there before they played ND and USC hasn't played anyone and there first ranked team they played, they got smash mouth man handled football. Get use to it USC fans, USC playing better ranked teams and it's going to get worse. LR offense got exposed by PAC 12 with unranked teams and playing a ranked team like ND really exposed USC offense. LR runs the same plays over and over and sooner rather than later the opponents going to know what is coming before they even run the plays. i don't see LR fixing this team anytime soon. It's going to take a whole season or more to get the right coaches and players. Was hoping they would fix things before ND game but it seems like this USC team is getting worse every week. This is definitely not the defense fault, the defense played the best they could but the interceptions, fumble, kickoff return for TD not going to help the defense.
